An Loc is a vague possibility.
|
I reckon it might be Phuoc Binh
|
|
I think the road is the 741/ Duong Dinh Tien Hoang. I have the location as Phuoc Binh - very close to Huyen Phuoc Long - or the same place?
The "Town Hall" shows up much better on Bing Maps than Google Maps. |
That's interesting nvubu.
I went there to discover it's a province and I still can't see the town hall. |
nvubu has it.
It is the airstrip known as Song Be City, in the middle of the town of Phước Long, also known as Sông Bé City. Sông Bé means the River Bé, which flows through this valley. The Fire Support Base 5km to the southwest was known as FSB Buttons, but was also referred to as Song Be. It was one of the biggest FSBs in this part of Vietnam. Thanks for the tip about Bing Maps. The imagery is remarkable detailed, much better than Google, although older. I can clearly see the Town Hall and the FSB Buttons runway, complete with markings. Google Earth shows the area is now a grid of roads. For the "avoidance of doubt", the Town Hall is at 11°51'13.62"N, 106°59'46.76"E and FSB Buttons is at 11°49'8.47"N, 106°57'39.53"E The hill to the south is Núi Bà Rá (White Virgin Mountain). It had a communications base on it during the war. Further south, near Tay Ninh, is a similar mountain called Núi Bà Đen (Black Virgin Mountain), which also was used for communications. They are both isolated volcanic plugs. I reckon it might be Phuoc Binh nvubu has control. |
PM for India Four Two.

Here is the Town Hall in Google Maps - clicky
Lots of foliage. use Bing Maps for the same location and it is more obvious. Phuoc Binh was the next location to the west of Bao Loc on the map I was looking at.(I used this map in a challenge in November last year :) ) https://3avzma.bl.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none Posts crossed :) |
Here's the next challenge - Might even be in the same region :ok:
More images will follow if this stumps everyone. https://pee96w.db.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none ETA: By region I mean area of the world :) |
Bien Hoa maybe.
|
It isn't Bien Hoa.
I don't think there is any evidence remaining on the ground for this location. |
I don't suppose there is.
They look like revetments for either aircraft or weapons. Are we still in Vietnam ? |
We are still in Vietnam.
Most of the airfields I've looked at previously in Vietnam I've found evidence on GE for them. I'll check again when I get home as I've found some wide angle shots, so I should be able to locate it exactly. |
I've found a plan of the base and an overlay onto the current map, and there is nothing left apart from a couple of roads.

Phuoc Vinh, possibly...?
there is a map on `www,18thand54thaviationcompanyotternest.com`.... |
Wheressa map ?
|
It isn't Phuoc Vinh. That's a great map - I can confirm that this airfield does appear on it :)
Here's an image of the runway. https://oqpgya.db.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none the url for the map has a comma in it in error - here's a link to it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwq...tVk5jYy0w/view Edit to add: The road on the right that goas around the end of the runway and bends around to the left looks like it still exists. |
I replaced the comma with a full stop first
|
and there is nothing left apart from a couple of roads. |
It isn't An Khe.
These were on their way to this base. https://zbgwea.db.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none |
