Hmm - TWO runways!!!
Smog............ flat, Is that the coast in the distance? If it wasn't for the large roundabout/traffic circle to the right I'd be thinking S California |
Queen Alia International Airport,Amman?

Smokeon has it, Queen Alia.

Here's an airport I flew into once, in a private 727!
|
Canada.................... big country Canada...................
|
Churchill, Manitoba (CYYQ).
|
What a ghastly looking spot!!!
|
Kewbick has it. It was the first leg of my first trip to Russia in a chartered mining company 727, which was so old, it still had hat-racks!
The route was Calgary - Churchill - Iqaluit - Keflavik - Murmansk - Usinsk - Uhkta. Harry, it’s not so bad - the Polar Bears like it! However I must confess I feel sorry for Wales and Dymond who were sent here to observe the Transit of Venus, while Cook was sent to Tahiti! Kewbick has the con. |
Things are looking bleak for the town of Churchill, as the single rail line connecting Churchill to the south is broken and the company that owns the railroad won't repair it. No grain or containers can be shipped from the port of Churchill for export. There is no highway that connects to Thompson and points south. Most everything comes and goes through the airport. The town, (more of a village, as the population is only around 900), must rely on tourism.
Here is the next challenge: https://i.imgur.com/M4FRHrF.jpg |
Big airport for a small town - unless the main town is out of site - no trees = Tundra - not S Argentina or Chile - a bit neat for the FSU - Canada or Alaska? Or N Scandanavia.............
|
Looks like military or ex military, ARP on the runway end and what seems to be parking bays on the taxiway.
|
? No idea but are those Ski runs on the low ridge in the background?
|
Looks like it's used as a staging hub maybe - is that a big hotel (dark blue building) just this side of the apron? Strange for security if it is................................
Could be High Plains in the US/Canada in autumn when everything is brown .................. |
The Russian military carried out a lot of work to see what was the best background for aircaft instruments in the cockpit - they came up with a light blue colour which you see in a lot of their designs.
Interestingly Microsoft did the same some years later and came to exactly the same conclusion - hence the blue background that used to be standard on all Windows products.......... |
I see what you mean about it being a bit neat for the FSU, Harry, but the terminal area in the foreground looks like the new bit (maybe built with Western investment?) with the original airfield at left, which looks Warsaw Pact to my uneducated eyes. Could that be the Caspian Sea on the horizon?
|
I zoomed-in to see if I could identify the aircraft on the ramp, and I noticed the word EXPERIMENTAL reflected in the canopy. That and what appears to be a single-digit runway number, makes me think this is Alaska.
|
As it has been 24-hours since posting my challenge, a clue is in order. The mystery aerodrome is located in Russia.
