What? No ICAO code? No history? And no challenge?..It is indeed UHMA Anadyr Russia Siberia Airport. Cows getting bigger is correct. OPEN HOUSE.

So that's what I always thought was Anadyr ... DYR is the Russian Code
Lots of old rubbish there apparently and used for cold weather trials http://www.pprune.org/members/326184...e744-index.jpg http://www.pprune.org/members/326184...743-2index.jpg http://www.pprune.org/members/326184...742-3index.jpg |
UHMA is the ICAO code for the Anadyr aerodrome. A.K.A. Ugolny Airport.
It is a storied locale in Russia's history. As Cows getting bigger has suggested, it is OPEN HOUSE |

Looks like military or ex military, ARP on the runway end and what seems to be parking bays on the taxiway.

Indeed. Well done. We await a new "mystery aerodrome challenge"...
|
"Seems a bit of a daft design with the main apron where it is and only one taxiway from it direct to the runway."
Apparently it was never a fullsclae base - they call it a "bounce" or "staging" airbase - presumably too remote for easy resupply and too close to both the sea and Alaska for a permanent base but usefull for dispersion, refueling and recovery |
Ok, a new mystery aerodrome challenge

A wild stab - Hickham AFB, Honolulu.
|
Although in the same hemisphere, Hickham is about as far from this airfield as it could be.
|
I detect deciduous trees and a Wellington lurking in the background, so "an airfield somewhere in England"?
|
I'm going to take a wild guess. St. Eval?
|
Jenkins has it, Bassingbourn it is. Over to you

A wild guess; somewhere in Sarawak?
|
Close enough. In fact it is one of 10 jungle forts landing strips built by the Royal Engineers (with help from Australians) in Peninsular Malaysia (then Malaya) in the mid 1950's.
This one named Fort Chabai was, North to South from the border with Thailand, second. The a/c was an RAF Squadron 267 (lated renumbered as 209) Single Engine Pioneer, which supplied the forts during the "Emergency". The need for forts in Sarawak arose 8 years later in the early 1960's. The list of forts with landing strips was Kemar, Chabai, Legap, Brooke, Selim, Telanok, Dixon, Shean, Langkap and Iskander. The "approach" photo was taken by my father in 1955/56 to assist new pilots on the Squadron. Over to you chimbu warrier. |
