India 4-2 has it - Dak To it is on 15th November 1967,
Over to you. |
Thanks nvubu,
With that kind of terrain, I figured it had to be in the Vietnamese Highlands and given the size of the base, somewhere near the DMZ. So I started at Kon Tum and looked around. I'll need some time to find a new challenge so in the meantime, Open House. |
The smoke and date clues leads to some interesting history. I expect the photos were taken on the next morning.
Smoke is from two burning aircraft. The base would see extensive activity throughout the second half of 1967, culminating in the Battle of Dak To in November 1967. On the night of 15 November, North Vietnamese mortar fire hit two C-130 transport aircraft (#62-1865 and #63-7827) destroying them and setting off secondary explosions and fires in the ammunition dump and fuel storage areas |

it's getting harder all the time TBH - people on here have been EVERYWHERE https://www.dropbox.com/s/oepsdaqday...p%201.jpg?dl=1 |
looks like somewhere in S europe?
|
It is about as far away from S Europe as you can possibly get.
Also, you will not find many places like this where your altimeter shows over 8000' after landing. |
Could be PNG - but so many !
|
PNG, and the altitude is the giveaway clue.
(actually 8400' IRC but it depends on which end you measure it). :) |
Have to dig out my MAF Airstrip guide..................... the most frightening book I've ever read TBH
|
Nothing to it!
If you survived your first 12 months it was "a piece of cake". Flat two direction runways at sea level was for wimps! |
The happily-named Wau comes to mind (AIP quote "land uphill; take-off downhill; park across gradient") but I don't think it's high enough. Must have a rummage in my files.
|
" If you survived your first 12 months" ... precisely
I have the greatest respect for the people who fly there day in day out |
Kelsugl? I was last there 37 years ago and don't remember that much grass; it was more gravel than grass.
|
Yes. Keglsugl on the side of Mt. Wilhelm it is.
It has changed a lot over the years. The original photo was taken in the '60s so I gues you remember it later more like this: http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...stripPNGK1.jpg I like the windsock aligned with the runway - it definately was a one way strip! There is a story on the 'PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok ' thead about someone who had his single engine fail on takeoff here, so just fell into the valley and glided down to land safely at a lower airstrip :ok: Wantok chimbu warrior has control. |
Yes that is more like I remember it.
I'm still IT-challenged, so will declare open house. |
