Does the aircraft hail from Russia by any chance?

The mystery ship bears a vague similarity to the Fokker F26 Phantom that was penned in the late 1940s. Does Dr. Ir. H.J. van der Mass have a connection to your challenge?

EvansB,

while I unfortunately am unable to find out the designer of the plane, I am positive that he is in no way connected to the gentleman You named.

Skytrain 10,

the plane has indeed been designed in the GDR by the optimistic guys at VEB Flugzeugwerk Dresden. It is not the 154 though.

Having finally found drawings for the 153, 154 and 155 which all appear to be prop aircraft I am really at a loss. There is reference to a 155A variant being jet powered, but the basic VEB-155 bears little similarity to the drawing. Maybe this was an earlier design for the ill-fated VEB-152?? Having said that the nose looks a little like the original blunt nose on the IL-18 prototype which makes me wonder if this was a VEB inspired variant of that, bearing in mind their close association with the IL-14.

skytrain10,

I am sorry, but there is one VEB FWD design that You did not yet list.

There are two jet powered 155 variants, but these have two engines: one version mounted on top of the wings (a la VFW614), and the other version mounted at the 11 and 1 oīclock position of the fuselage, and do indeed not look like the challenge plane. That one appears an earlier design than the Jet 155, despite having a higher number.

EDIT: Correction

EvansB,

Hats off! VEB FWD 160 is correct. A rather forgotten, but -in my eyes- very interesting project. Your controls.

Thank you. That was quite a challenge. Here is a design that actually left the drawing board:
