A news article which i noticed on my phone tonight, Syd morning Herald, 15 November 2018, 3:54pm, (5 hours ago),
title: "The Irish are muscling in on our special US visa, so we've gone nuts".

From news article by Matthew Knott:

New York: Ireland is trying to muscle in on a special United States visa class that only Australians currently enjoy and has limited numbers.

A bipartisan bill before the US Congress threatens to open access to the prized E3 visa class to Irish workers, a prospect that has sparked an intense
lobbying campaign by Australia's ambassador to Washington, Joe, to block the move.

Story then continues in the next few paragraphs.

What does it mean?

It means that Irish nationals will be able to work for US regionals, same as the OZ pilots, if the legislation to expand the E3 scheme
to Irish, which is due for debate in the coming weeks.

Off topic, i read a few comments on the air pilot central forums, apparently Canadians can also now work for US regionals,
with a response from blogger, now Aussies and Canadians are here.

Which Irish pilots? Aer Lingus is so short its paying skippers €5,000 for an extra two day trip. Aer Lingus has used cadet schemes since forever.
The Irish GA scene is miniscule, as is their Air Force.

Having just read the article I can see why Joe is upset. Australia fought very hard for that visa concession and giving unused visas away is like somebody else getting all the benefit for little to no effort.
The USA is very unlikely to make a visa category specially for Irish nationals so the next best thing is to piggy back on someone else's.
I personally don't care if they take up unused visas from the allocation but the fact that they played no part in the negotiation of the visa in the first place is a bit rude.

Are there lots of 1500 hour Irish pilots willing to come over here ? I'm not familiar with the stats for all the EU.

There are fewer than 300 registered GA aircraft in Ireland, mostly singles, and that includes rotary and homebuilts. The Air Corps has three fixed wing aircraft bigger than a trainer. Ireland has 20% of Australia's population and I'd guess 5-10% of its aviation activity. At the very most.

The Irish don't want the visas for pilots. It will be for uni grad Irish who can't find work at home and see the USA as the land of milk and honey.

Well, if they have the skills the employers need, you're probably right. But they may sneak in a few pilots too !

Anyone kow how Havick got banned ? Seems out of character for such a level headed pilot. It’s a shame, he helped quite a few people.

He got banned ? Just temporarily ? I usually follow what he posts and haven't seen anything out of line from him.

Any chances for Kiwi’s?

Heya guys,

Had a good few hours of reading through the latest posts on this thread.

Good on ya’ll who are making the move, exciting times!

So, from what I can tell from here, as a Kiwi with an OZ & NZ CPL and ATO time (I do NOT hold a degree and only have approx 4 years paid industry experience), I am not eligable for an E3 visa, correct?

Does anyone know if there is an equivalent visa for New Zealanders? Or is my only option to go to the US and gain my FAA ATP off my own back, and win the green card lottery also?

TIA

I don't know how common it is, but Air Wisconsin got an H1B for someone this year to be a CRJ F/O:

Here's their history of getting visas for pilots. Not sure what they're doing most recently:

H1B requires the equivalent of a 4 year college degree just to apply. Only a certain amount are issued every year. They always reach the cap and people do miss out.

Unfortunately(?), no... there isn't... They (US govt) signed a new law earlier this year that gives Kiwi's access to the E-1 and E-2 visas... but these are for businesses and investors (Treaty Trader and Treaty Investor)... the E-3 is still an Australian only category.
So, as a Kiwi, your only options are the H-1B (very difficult to get as it is oversubscribed) and the "Green Card Lottery".

Great info thanks team, that’s a shame. Hopefully there maybe something for us Kiwis in the future.

On a side note, what is required for a kiwi to go the US to do the ATP? Is it just a licence validation and temporary visitors visa?

Cheers

There is a whole thread dedicated to FAA licence conversion. Most of the information is also very easy to find with a quick Google search.

Thanks, another thing I was meant to ask also was, are there many job opportunities outside the US for foreigners on an FAA licence? I know of a few pilots down this end of the world flying N rego biz jets. Just wondering how that side of things work....

Cheers

Rmv,

Have you considered contacting the US regionals and asking what possibilities there are for a person in your situation ? Air Wisconsin has gotten H1Bs for people in the past albeit very few. Not sure what they're doing these days but asking the question is easy.

There's an Air Wisconsin thread on this website. Someone might know something:

They can't kill ya and eat ya for asking:
