A sad fact of reality is that Australia is too expensive. How much does CN pay a LAME in the states? No medical, 2 weeks leave, roster changes every week. Less union troubles. Why wouldn't they move there?

Why wouldn't they move there?
Because they have to pay two Mexicans to do the work of one Australian LAME and if the do move, quality and safety will reduce.

May I remind you all that VAI's B777 main maintenance base is LAX, with SIAECUSA as the MRO and is CASA approved, but operates under the FAA system. A good proportion of SIAECUSA's certifying staff are on secondment from the parent company in SIN. The pay rate is about USD $24-25 per hour. Unfortunately, with the high Australian dollar, we just cannot compete. For Australian long haul operations, I can foresee that we will all become transit stations only, with little or no scheduled work carried out here.
I also feel that the CASA licence is well into the process of being dumbed down, with little or no opportunities for apprenticeships in the airlines and business only too eager to abuse the 457 Visa charade.
Again, last week, I have had to be blunt about the job prospects in the airline business to a friend's son, who was keen to enter the industry. If he could land a job, he would be faced with the prospect of many, many years as an AME only, on permanent nightshift. Hardly a career to aspire to.

With a fleet so small, it does surprise me that virgin outsource their 777 maintenance.

Why would you invest the capital into a maintenance facility and training of people, carriage of spares, etc, to do a few aircraft?

I guess QANTAS will be reviewing its maintenance of the A380's down the track as they're now only staying with 12 A380's and not going for the 20 as first intended. SQ and EK have far more of the aircraft type than QANTAS.

Know several people who have had a response all by email a lot of emails no one has spoke to a real person .
They all now expect this will go no where & was just a waste of time which for Qantas is not new .

4 emails with 2 assessments to be exact
Seems like Qantas is going ahead with the intake

We have just sent you two SHL online assessments to complete in preparation of progressing through to the next stage of the recruitment process for these positions.

You have also been sent an email with a list of instructions to complete these assessments we ask that you complete these assessments by 11pm on Tuesday the 8th of January, 2013.

Qantas Engineering redundances - Advice required!!!

The vacancies are 12 month contracts. The workload cycles up and down due to the way the company acquired the aircraft (737s). The company want to "man" the facility for the low points and then use labour hire, short term fixed etc for the high points.

With AVV downsizing it would be a perfect time to recruit as
many AMEs on permanent contracts as they want but they choose not to. This tells me than they have as many permanent staff as they want.

The 12 month QF contracts also tells me that they don't want to use ALG anymore.

Most of the people left at AVV are the useless, "pay me more", lazy kiss arses. Most good engineers/LAME's have either left or been shown the door already. Why would you want to make Brisbane into what Avalon is? Thats a sure fire way to close more of the company.

They have the chance to pick who they want from Avalon. Yes there is a lot of dead wood there but there are still a lot of good engineers still there and will shortly be out of work.

They will want the ones who either choose not to or don't know how to find things wrong with aircraft.
