I agree. The difference in types is marginal and not really detectable in the real world - the saying "lies, damn lies and statistitics" is particularly true to the world of aircraft noise monitoring.

I would imagine that the equipment that measures noise has 'perfect hearing' across the full sound range from high to low pitch.

The reality for real people with real ears is that as we get older our hearing changes, particularly at the higher pitch end of the spectrum so perhaps the scientific measurement is correct, but to us older people the sound is little different.

Or, of course, it could be environmental 'sound washing'!

I have lived under the approaches/departures for LHR + LTN at various places and still do.

On climb out from LHR, there is no doubt that the 777 is easily identified by being loud!!

Airbus Neo's are definitely quieter than the Ceo's, but I personally think there's a bigger difference between Boeing's NG's and MAX's which are noticeably quieter. The QC rating's will tell you each of Airbus and Boeing's equivalents are the same, but my personal observation is MAX's are quieter than Neo's.

Possibly not the right thread but here goes anyway.

I have just seen something exceptionally unusual - or at least for me to see.

At about 18:10 this evening high above Luton a column of 22 aircraft line astern on a track approx west to east more or less on a line between Luton Hoo house and Capability Green offices.

After that burst of rain cleared up around 17:00 and then clear sky I went for one of my usual walks of about 5 mile out from Luton past Parkway and on to the footpath parallelling the railway towards Harpenden.

At about 18:10 I had stopped for a pause to admire Jupiter in the east which is very bright tonight. As I turned away from the east still looking up at stars I saw half a dozen aircraft lights one behind the other moving more or less west to east. I had to look three or 4 times before I believed it, but 6 became 7, became 8, 9 ..... there were so many as they passed above and the lead aircraft disappeared from view more were still appearing. I made it 22 but that could be +/-2 as not all were in view at the same time.

Their general demeanor although high suggested to me they were heavies, even a layman like me knows no way would civil aircraft fly like that.

I'm sure we could all speculate who why where what they were doing, so I will limit this to just my report.

Hope of interest or maybe moderator shunt to a more appropriate thread; I put it here as it is Luton.

Confirmation if your car wasn't on the top floor of CP2, zero chance of recovery.

Removing the buried EV’s without damaging their batteries will be a challenge and a slow process.

My daughter saw them driving home from work last night, she thought her eyes were going funny! Apparantly they are visible for the next few nights about 1730. But probably not tonight with this weather!

I like the item in the Sky News story saying that a man was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage "as a precaution". I bet he loved that.

Think it was last year that someone got arrested at home as the airport operator said he was making too many noise complaints. After having his mobile phone, tablet and PC seized, they were eventually returned, as there was no case to answer.

I myself have had a run in with airport police a few years ago after I was spotted taking a photo of the flight departure board. Two armed airport copper's came up and told me that I was not allowed to take photos of the said board. They then went through my camera looking for other incriminating airport photos. They picked on the wrong person that day, as I went on to educate them on the airport’s bylaws and where and where not photographs could be taken for personal use at the airport. The eventually backed down and went on their way to try and find someone else to pick on while ignoring the illegal taxi touts that plague the airport.

There I was thinking they were satellites which remain in orbit and never stop work - without homes to go to. I certainly never expected them to be able to drive.

I thought he was caught inside the CP2 area, so what was he doing, trying to retrieve something from his own car or someone else's? Criminal damage would imply he was armed for the job.
Sure it will become known once case goes to courts.

The story in the sun said it was someone trying to retrieve personal items while the rest of the press said it was the car driver that got arrested.

I do like that the Police thought it was illegal to photo arrival/departure boards - when the airport make that information freely available on line and in specialised Smartphone apps.

I took a photo of the departure board, as there was an interesting departure on it. The intention was to look it up later. Seems these two of Bedfordshire’s finest and armed to the teeth thought this photo was a threat to the airport so claimed it wasn’t allowed.

I saw a YouTube video once of someone filming a selfie at the front of the terminal in the bus station and was told filming wasn’t allowed. The police must have had a hissy fit at all of the video that appeared online of the fire.

Yes St Helena using a 757. It was meant to be a scheduled service but never happened due to wind issues with the runway.

Shortly before I finished working at the airport in 2019 I had an unpleasant encounter with one of the airport airside ops staff. I was inside the gate facing stand 7 waiting for an aircraft I wanted to photograph. Presumably someone saw the camera on CCTV and this ops person was despatched to intercept the offender. He arrived outside the gate and came in to inform me I was not allowed to take photographs. Having been doing so for over 40 years I queried the reason why. His reply was "it was prohibited under the airport byelaws because terrorists look for airport photos online to identify weak spots. And if he saw me trying to take a photo he would confiscate both the camera and my airport ID pass". I thought better of voicing the reply I quickly thought up, which was along the lines of "the airport handles 18m passengers per year. That’s nearly 50,000 per day. Of those at least 45,000 will be carrying a smart phone. Probably at least 40,000 will use their phone to take photos and/or videos while they are here. Which then appear on social media. Are you going to confiscate 40,000 smart phones every day to thwart the terrorists?". No it wasn’t worth the stress. Especially if I’d resisted his attempts to confiscate the camera – armed police would have been summoned in seconds. Happy days.
