It'll inevitably be the local Council Tax payers. They absolutely adore subsidising 'Project Gatwick'. The townsfolk of Luton know that the benefits of the airport long term, will mean that their wheelie bin collections go from yearly, to 6 monthly. They fully understand that the town hall support of local groups, libraries and social facilities has to be reduced to become a second Heathrow.

LRT and the Town Hall run a very effective propaganda machine that Putin would be proud of. Most people have no idea what is going on apart from the selective information they are told.
The construction of the Dart forecourt at Parkway is hardy progressing now. I doubt it will be finished for Christmas but then the Dart won’t open now until at least the Spring of next year. It was meant to be a 12 week project, more like 26 weeks now.

Just returned to LTN for first time in five years after swearing never to use the place again. To be fair departing was a breeze, helped by it being a quiet time of day at a quieter time of year. The problem was the return. Despite it again being fairly quiet and no checked baggage, it took forever to get out of the place. Touchdown to exiting the terminal about 20 minutes, very acceptable. Exiting the terminal to getting out of the long stay car park, about an hour. Not acceptable.

Farringdon - Heathrow Terminal 1,2,3 38 minutes
Farringdon - Gatwick South 39 minutes *
Farringdon - Heathrow Terminal 4 46 minutes
Farringdon - Heathrow Terminal 5 47 minutes
Farringdon- Stansted 1 hour 6 minutes
Farringdon - Southend 1 hour 8 minutes
* Gatwick North involves catching a Dart equivalent between terminals.

35 min + DART to LTN then compare with Farringdon to City airport that comes out at 40-42 min by the journey planners dependant on the Eliz / DLR / walk combination.
Luton actually scores quite highly in this respect.
And Thameslink is nominally a 24 h service (even if tube and Eliz. is not) which does not apply everywhere else.
P.S.
BHX comes out at 1 h 24 min + transit; that when you consider Farringdon / Euston is not direct AND that BHX is ~105 miles out ; c.f. ~38 mi for STD and ~39 mi for SEN.

There was talk before the EMR franchise announcement of Luton Express branding seeing the non-stop service from St Pancras only takes as little as 22 minutes. The doubling of non-stop services to 2 an hour was still a major disappointment as LRT was pushing for 4 trains per hour. Also despite going all electric from diesel, the major downgrading of the rolling stock from intercity trains to ex Southend Airport Anglia Railway commuter stock had to be another disappointment. With no luggage space and the inability to walk from one end of the train to the other looking for empty seats does nothing to enhance the service particularly when the new 12 carriage walkthrough Thameslink trains are far superior.
The EMR electric trains are meant to have been refurbished by now from 2+3 seating to 2+2 seating but I have yet to encounter one.

A bit of a contrast from the Which readers awards but then how many people actually voted in the Condé Nast Readers’ Choice Awards, a publication I have never heard of.
Luton got itself out of bottom position in the Which awards not by effort but by the fact that far less people are using Luton. The more passengers that use Luton the worse it gets. 18 million is bad enough but the plan is to add another million with no new physical infrastructure.

Any award, even coming second is better than no award. When the Dart opens it will help improve the customer experience, but at a cost.

3 New Airlines have tried to get slots.
Sky Express, Eastern Airways and Emerald Airlines.
all are on the wait list.
More cargo slots during the day for MNG and DHL.

All good news, did notice again two MNG last night, one comes from Far East via Istanbul.
Makes you wonder where Eastern is thinking of connecting, Newcastle? Emerald, surely not Dublin?
SkyExpress would be LHR overflow like El Al.
Can't think Blue Air can hold onto those slots much longer, sell them and pay some debts? Could give SEN an opportunity if they do get refinancing.

Perhaps speculative applications for both in relation to PSOs? NQY could be one - not sure if they are currently using someone else’s slots at LGW? LDY if that is up for grabs?
