The whole thing is the Global players to US out of Manchester i:e AA and UA are both letting the market down as their product are so bad and unreliable.

Anybody know when Gates 213-215 at MAN T2 will close completely to the Public? I've heard it was this Month. I was also told that the stands from now on will not be used by any large aircraft, resulting in the Majority of Thomson 767 flights to be on remote stands this summer. It was pretty quiet when I was there on 30th June:

Also the Escalator by the Monarch Check In Desks has also been removed (though the lift can still be used).

I think the scope for TCX is immense
They're a chaotic mess behind the scenes IMHO.
If Norwegian were to take a serious look at MAN with 787s, the public would likely choose DY as they'd be cheaper with shinier aeroplanes. Norwegian have become what VS used to be. A dangerous upstart challenging the major players' lethargy and lack of investment in some cabins. VS went all establishment and as a result lost their upstart mobility. Virgin are the airline your parents think are cutting edge. Not that I don't have a soft spot for VS but DY are the real deal. A brutal exercise in capitalist economics, devoid of misty eyed thinking. They are now achieving critical mass. Thomas Cook are, on the other hand the most local of players at MAN but they lack global reach or ambition and have a fraction of the expansion potential. They may have put the brakes on VS doing better at MAN only to lose out to an incoming Norwegian invasion. MAN is perfect for Norwegian long haul, they're everything MAN needs. Growing global reach on short and long haul with so many aircraft coming they have to go somewhere.

"Will they put me in a lounge for my connection from Oakland? Will they cross deck me onto a partner if they go tech? Can I upgrade reasonably often for free? I'm buying J do they have F? Do they offer all aisle seating? Do they issue a currency that gives me free flights on a large network?"

Would this be BA by any chance ?

My God good luck with that one.

Three occasions they have had my business due "bloody corporate double speak".

Canx my long haul flight at 6 hours notice.

Lost my bags on another occasion.

Lounge at Heathrow filthy.

A beacon of customer service ?

I really don`t think Norwegian is the real deal up North, they change and cut services from week to week and are not know up here at all whereas TCX have a huge following on it`s US
departures and have taken a very large chunk of business of the US operators due to their
poor service and are a lot cheaper than VS with an inferior product.

You could well be right about Norwegian's potential to oust TCX at MAN but I wonder if they have missed the boat? MAN's capacity for the next few years is going to be very constrained during the morning North Atlantic peak. There's already up to 6 TCX A330s on Pier C, along with TS, EY, and the EK A380 on Pier B there's no heavy gates left at T1. At T2 where 2 wide body gates have just been taken out, the remainder are all over-subscribed, with VS having up to 5 on the ground, and then CX, SQ (2 on some days) with both HU and SV now daily. TCX would have to blink first to create the opportunity but right now that doesn't seem likely. The other way might be if they could persuade passengers to depart in the mid to late afternoon, arriving in the US late evening. Other than that I think we might see Norwegian become a niche player at MAN with 737MAXs to obscure East Coast destinations, which will have minimal effect on the incumbents and so could be a good thing overall.

Perhaps TCX needs to really tighten its grip then? Complete it's US and Caribbean offering ( new destinations, increased frequency, upgraded hard product and stronger winter offering) look East and South for off peak departure destinations (India, China, Thailand, South Africa and others) and really commit to the hub concept with partner airlines. Could easily envisage 10 based A330s pretty soon. Combine that with a decent order for new aircraft and they could become properly entrenched.

Skip,

Unfortunately I can't agree with your TCX vs DY comparison.

Fares wise, TCX are routinely cheaper than DY on a similar route comparison. Let's not forget a TCX fare includes baggage and meals, DY do not. Sometimes the base fare can be cheaper, but add in the extras.....

Shiny new airplanes? Maybe. But internally both are on par in my opinion.

Global reach? Yes, TCX may not be setting up companies in Bangkok, Norway, Ireland, UK, Argentina and the US, but is that a bad thing? To see the quick and large expansion of DY is alarming, as there is not yet the historics to see if this long haul expansion is sustainable. Would much rather see TCX and their local focus than Incentive chasing easily distracted Norwegian.

Also, as mentioned, TCX has made a deal with FOSUN to give TCX access to one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. If that's not ambition, what is exactly? Lastly, codeshares with the likes of SK/BE/DE/LH means that TCX actually has a lot more coverage than you give them credit for.

Chaotic? I'm sorry but TCX hasn't hit the headlines as half as much as Norwegian have? Or are we going to Brush the many issues Norwegian have had under the carpet and pretend they haven't happened?

As said, there is also nothing to suggest DY would give MAN anywhere near the route profile that TCX has. I'd rather the 20 or so long haul destinations that TCX has given MAN, than 2 obscure airports that aim to serve cities they are no where near. TCX really does have more scope than Norwegian can at MAN.

As for people switching to DU from TCX if they came on the scene, clearly you don't know how strong the TCX brand is around the north/North West. There is a reason they seem to be kicking the arse of the likes of AA.

Perhaps in your opinion, but over the past 12 months what evidence do you have to support that claim?
Successful new long haul destination launches, cabin refreshes, steady fleet enlargement, realistic product fares, stable short haul, reasonable OTP, no recent poor press PR....

I've said it before Thomas Cook need to use the Condor brand for All scheduled Long Haul combined with operations out of Frankfurt with some sort of regular connecting flights between the two.

I've also said way back in the spring that 2018-2019 will be difficult especially for Manchester (we could actually see significant slow down in growth and even a small decline next year)

The reduction in the Virgin seasonal service period is evidence of the impending weaknesses in forward bookings imho.

Consolidation is beginning to raise its head with general economic slow downs rising inflation weaked currency with the bank rate setting committee's more vociferous warning of interest rate rises in the near future.

All will reduce the available spending power in the largely leisure travel market that continues to dominate Manchester Airport profiles in particular

Norwegian seems more preoccupied with getting up the noses of IAG and the other big boys at cities like LON, BCN, PAR and ROM to be bothered with longhaul and TCX at MAN for the moment.

If anything it's Norwegian that has some behind the scenes sorting out to do given recent media coverage about transatlantic cancellations from BFS, SNN and other flight disruptions. This time it's blamed on pilot shortages and later than expected MAX deliveries - previous years we've had pilot strikes, aircraft shortages, and a messy 787 introduction. All the signs of an airline growing perhaps a little faster than it can manage, but I hope it works out for them.

All make very valid points with regard to competition between TCX and other carriers flying from MAN to US destinations; whether it's a 'Low Cost' carrier offering first class, wide-bodied vs Narrow etc.

However

One other factor which has yet to be raised: A non-legacy US carrier offering low cost Trans-Atlantic flights on narrow bodied aircraft between MAN and major US destination(s).
With the advent of the A321neo, this is a distinct possibility. This may not have a direct impact on TCX as they are already involved in agreements with at least 1 such US carrier.
Exciting stuff!

Something that may have an effect on Manchester and Liverpool airports is that the Lake District has just been made a Unesco site like the Grand Canyon

Icon Industrial, a joint venture between TPG Real Estate and Stoford Developments, has bought 45 acres of land at Global Logistics, the development zone at Airport City Manchester with the potential to deliver 1m sq ft of warehouses.
I can't make out who the end user will actually be, but this is a big deal.

Gazza,

I'd keep up to date with the flights then as it looks like the 5th will become bookable again, as that's a Tue and winter showing Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun flights, unless the system is mid way through a change as Tue/Sat is £595 but Thu/Sun is £113?
