The first thing she should do is scrap HS2 and put the money into improving the lot of the long suffering commuters travelling between the UK major conurbations.
It will be scrapped, it's white elephant, and not particularly well thought through.

The money could better spent elsewhere: a Manchester crosslink between Liverpool and Leeds, HS3, decent rolling stock in the north and in the west, improved commuter metro-style rail in many UK cities, etc.. Also improving pinch-points and redesigning bottle neck junctions will help with journey times.

It's incremental improvements v. vanity project.

Philbky, I am more than aware of that. I used the word improve.

The rolling stock used between some of these cities is nothing short of disgraceful along with the constant delays that beset the working day of many a commuter. My train of an evening has been on time twice in 14 years! The present rail operation needs to be improved and made efficient throughout the country before spending money on the HS2 fairytale.
Exactly.

Ametyst1, why spend money on sticking plasters when a whole new system would improve speed and comfort between the cities? The French, Germans and Italiuans did it. Oh, sorry, forgot, we don't like Europe.
Because the money saved by scrapping HS2 could be used to benefit several communities throughout the country instead of a vanity project that only benefits 5 cities/towns in the UK.
Because local and commuter services are a greater priority and intercity services aren't so bad. London-Manchester/Leeds in 2hrs 15-ish is reasonable.
The problem with intercity services is ticket prices, HS2 won't resolve this.

Surprisingly, it is nothing to with Europe, not everything is.

Well the 2 new routes to Australia were applied for before MAN and BCN to PVG, so, things are ticking along.

I'm lead to believe MAN will be March 1st at the earliest anyway.

Shame it keeps getting pushed back. March 2017 already sees a few new services. It may yet see a lot of new services!

A last point on the HS2. The West Coast Main Line is full and new pathways are at a premium. It cannot be upgraded and pathways are needed for freight. HS2 is not a vanity project it is an essential part of the infrastructure for decades to come. There is EU funding available for local and regional rail services. Ireland has benefitted greatly from this but that particular baby has been thrown out with the bathwater thanks to Brexit.

MANFOD,

Without wanting to dampen the great work Seljuk does in keeping track with Emirates, all he does is keep track of already made announcements and amalgamated them into one thread.

Therefore, the fact nothing appears on his thread doesn't mean nothing is due to happen.

That said, Emirates seem to have cut back a lot of capacity this winter, and even with MAN doing well, it will be summer 17 before any capacity gets added. It's more likely to be when Oman and Air China start, as almost a warning shot.

On another note, nice Qatar Airways A319 due on a VIP flight on 22nd.

There will be a small dent in our passenger figures from today.

Lowcostholidays, who sold seats on existing airline services and then packaged with hotels has gone under.

Was a European wide company, and has 27,000 customers overseas at the moment.

I shouldn't have a huge impact on MAN, possibly 5000-7000 pax at most, and I don't envisage any airlines having adverse impacts, but, does set a worrying president that all is not well in the travel sector.

A Kilo. Nov. Oscar. Bravo. Head From The Times...

By Robert Lea, Industrial Editor (The Times)
July 14 2016

Two of Britain’s busiest airports [Manchester and Stansted] expect to suffer a Brexit-related slowdown in growth over the next couple of years, but their owner argues that one of them will still be so congested by 2030 that it will need a new runway. [Manchester already has a 2nd runway, which is scarcely used as there is not enough demand for it at present].

Cannot believe there was nil response. ....

I don't know whether MAG has made any press release about a slowdown in growth but his comment about the second runway and lack of demand is just typical of some of the poor journalism we've come to expect these days.
Perhaps someone should send him a copy of the official opening hours of R2 and ask him if he still believes his inflammatory use of "scarcely" is justified. If he looks at FR24 between 07.00 and 08.00 in a morning for example when both runways are in operation, he might just notice there can be a fair bit of holding for inbounds, sometimes more than LHR. Yes, there are quieter periods during the day even in summer but that doesn't mean his comment is justified.

HS2

Fairdealfrank - You make a very confident statement on HS2. If you actually were involved in this project, you would not be allowed to make any comment. It does call in to question anything else that you assert. If it is an opinion would you mind being clear it is.

It would be remarkable if HS2 phase 1 and 2a were cancelled at this stage.

Yes, the PM and cabinet has pretty much completely changed, but this is a project with enormous cross party support including from the PM and the vast majority of her cabinet - including those in the positions most crucial to the project.

Privately there may be reservations about certain elements of the project, but outwardly it is business as usual.

United from Washington being cut for the entire winter season, rather than just Jan/Feb/Mar.

Shame, I think these guys are the ones being squeezed out by the recent US expansion, as on the opposite end of the scale, Dublin, that used to be on par with Manchester back in the Continental days, gets 4 daily flights in the summer and B767/B777 to Newark in the winter.

The CAA numbers had been poor for some time. With the extra capacity already in situ and planned by VS/DL I'm not too surprised.

Looks like they may "replace" this capacity with the SQ service to IAH so let's see.

Flew United last week IAD/DUB and then EI to MAN. Lots of passengers joined flight in Washington from Orlando as we had to hold the flight for them, most, was surprised on arrival in DUB many of the Orlando passengers went on to GLA or on my flight to MAN, around 15 came on the Manchester flight. The Washington/Dublin sector was 100% full.

It's clear that HS2 is going to happen.

Phase 1 will receive Royal Assent in the next five or six months, phase 2A will follow shortly behind.

May has made strong speeches in favour before, it was her that went to Crewe the day phase 2A was announced.

Hammond was transport Secretary for years steering the bill through parliament, strongly supporting it.

Phase 2B will go to consultation this winter, if you put together a plan for HS2 to definitely happen as quickly as possible it'd look like what's happening.

To those who suggest extra commuter services should be ran into the large cities instead, could you please explain on what tracks?

The tracks are full into London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, you cannot add more services into those cities on existing tracks.

Hence HS2, take away the high speed services from those tracks to free up capacity to run extra services into those cities, hence why HS3 is dependant on HS2 freeing up capacity on the railway to allow those HS3 services to happen.

Given £11bn of contracts are being tendered at the moment for phase 1, anyone expecting the scheme to be cancelled is living in cloud cuckoo land in my opinion

Kurt,

"To those who suggest extra commuter services should be ran into large cities instead, could you please explain on what tracks?"

"The tracks are full into London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, you cannot add more services into those cities on existing tracks."

"Hence HS2, take away the hight speed services from those tracks to free up capacity to run extra services into those cities, hence why HS3 is dependent on HS2 freeing up capacity on the railway to allow those HS3 services to happen."

How are you going to produce the electricity required to power the trains on these new railway lines? Surely a better long-term strategic plan would be to reduce the requirment for all this unnecessary travel?
All this 'commuter service' stuff is nonsense. The jobs many people do after they have 'commuted', wasting both energy and vast chunks of their day could be carried out 'online', using modern technology, and possibly from home. This would reduce the total energy requirement, which may have long-term environmental benefits?
Why is there a need for great whacks of the population to be constantly in motion? The railways can't cope, the U.K. ATC system is struggling and the road transport network is totally f*cked. Just have a listen to a days-worth of Radio 2 traffic bulletins if you don't believe me.
