A last point on the HS2. The West Coast Main Line is full and new pathways are at a premium. It cannot be upgraded and pathways are needed for freight. HS2 is not a vanity project it is an essential part of the infrastructure for decades to come. There is EU funding available for local and regional rail services. Ireland has benefitted greatly from this but that particular baby has been thrown out with the bathwater thanks to Brexit.
