The CAA provisional figures for passengers from SEN in March total 74,420 which is an overall drop of 12.6% on March 2014. The annual running total is still showing an increase, of 5.5% in this case to 1,077,539.
There is a mixed picture for the routes flown from SEN. Some impressive growth on the Amsterdam, Geneva and Malaga services, but some steep decline on others, notably Dublin (for reasons we all know) and Barcelona (for reasons that I, at least, don't know....).
Alicante 9402 (+2%),
Amsterdam 19020 (+34%),
Barcelona 7880 (-31%),
Berlin 4939 (-7%),
Bern 828,
Caen 418,
Dublin 1294 (-74%),
Faro 4364 (-20%),
Geneva 7550 (+13%),
Groningen 1383,
Malaga 5963 (+15%),
Munster 1127,
Palma 405 (-85%),
Rennes 2279,
Tenerife 2583 (+7%),
Venice 4637 (-8%).

The Barcelona figures are worrying and have to be the result of a reduction in flights compared with previously. I believe that there were up to eight to ten flights a week at one time and passenger numbers were good.
easyJet have reduced the service down to four a week at present and I wonder what is actually going on. Are we soon to be told that 'owing to operational reasons', or 'insufficient passenger numbers.' etc. etc.? I certainly hope not.
Looking ahead. I am also keeping an eye on the Venice route. Arriving in Venice towards the end of the day can be stressful when trying to seek out one's hotel in the gloom.

Does anyone know what is happening with Stobart ATR 72-500 EI-REM at the moment? It is surplus to requirements now the BE operation has gone down to one aircraft and has not flown in over a month. AFAIK it is stored at SEN. Is this correct?

No, it isn't stored at SEN and has been away on heavy maintenance I believe. I assume that it will re-enter service elsewhere on the Stobart Air/Aer Lingus Regional network in due course.

A damning indictment of Stobart's faith in their own airport or the wrong aircraft which limits their choice of destinations?
Stobart Air, which I assume was set up to feed passengers principally into Southend got off to the wrong start with the Waterford fiasco and doesn't seem to have got much better since when it comes to Southend.
I wonder if the airline has actually damaged the Southend brand with its list of failed routes and I wonder if the airline will be flying out of Southend next year?
I hope it hangs in there but it is tough going as predicted here when they first announced the airline.

I'm sure there has been no declaration from Stobart that they will not launch additional routes from SEN under the Stobart Air/Flybe brand; it would be a pretty daft thing for them to say wouldn't it?. Neither have I heard any whispers to that effect.
There is obviously a limited number of opportunities in terms of potential routes but if, say, just two or three of the existing four routes proves sustainable in the medium term I would be surprised if replacements were not sought to ensure full utilisation of the SEN-based airframe. DUB would surely be on that list for future reinstatement I would think.

In an ideal world, I would like to see EI-REM come back from it's heavy maintenance and go back on the Flybe franchise, with new routes to Carlisle (because Stobart), Dublin (2 or 3 per day to make it work please :P ) and Ostend/Bruges. Bruges is a great draw for tourists, and it is currently impossible to fly there from the UK, excluding irregular freight-only flights from Lydd. To be honest, I am surprised they picked Antwerp instead of Bruges in the first place as it meant going head to head with CityJet/VLM from LCY and we all know how it ended.

OST would have been even more disastrous as it really isn't that far by road.
ANR is that bit further which meant it stood a chance in Stobart's eyes. Unfortunately, once you account for the train to Liverpool St you might just as we'll have travelled from ANR to Brussels and got the Eurostar. The only people it benefitted were those in Essex, and the market for Antwerp just isn't big enough. Antwerp is a nice city though and I did use the route - 16 out, 9 back and the previous day's flight had been cancelled

Anybody know what LCY Berne operation was like last year? was it skywork still, twice daily?
Was looking at the stats LCY had 2208 last March
SEN had 828 this March which is not good at all even on 31 seater 328

Bern
I calculate the Bern route to equate to an average of 11.8 pax per flight, LF 38%.
I know one flight went to LTN during fog, which judging by the CAA stats was carrying just 1 pax.
There may have been other cancellations I don't know of as there was fog and then high winds at the end of the month, in which case LF might be higher,
The Sat flight is new for summer. The drop in pax compared to the previous year can't have been helped by the lower frequency (8v11 p/w) and inability to make a day return on some days, but I believe frequency is now 13x weekly.
