There seems to be a disproportionate number of cancellations today at Southend due to the French air traffic control strike. Is this because Southend aircraft all end up over French airspace or is it due to the nighttime curfew and the fact that late aircraft would end up at Stansted?
As a comparison all but one easyjet flights at Luton and flying to Spain are still running although some are very late.

Reportedly there were 330 cancellations across the easyJet network yesterday so four cancellations at SEN doesn't seem totally surprising. The delayed flights highlighted by P in the R's all arrived at SEN yesterday evening.

Routes Europe 2015, the leading route development forum in Europe, will open this weekend with over 1,200 delegates to discuss where airlines will fly in the future. One of the largest civil aviation events of the year, Routes Europe 2015 will take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC), in Aberdeen, Scotland on 12-14 April, hosted by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire councils. It is the first time that the event is being held in the UK. Southend are one of them.

It's not the first time it's been in the uk ... Routes has been in the uk maybe twice before?
Nothing will happen immediately as a result unless its already been agreed and they're annoncing at routes. Routes is a slow burn conference ...

Maybe the ATR is tech and it's cancelled for that reason although I don't know if the pax both ways are supposed to wait until this evening's RNS flight to get home.
Incidentally I notice there is a Helvetic A319 pax charter to Bern this evening.

It's not just the fire category that's causing a problem for EZY at Southend which incidentally is not always able to be upgraded at 30mins notice... It's also the fact that SEN is outside of controlled airspace and the local radar boys & girls like to go home to sleep at night. Sometimes they agree to stay on and their goodwill is greatfully appreciated, other occasions it's not possible.

I was doing some shopping in Southend this morning and noticed two coaches going by with "Bern Symphony (I think) Orchestra" signed in the front window so maybe the chartered aircraft is to take the orchestra members home after a performance?

Captain caveman... You may wish to check your info there. As of a week ago Southend has its own controlled airspace and ATC IS H24 so neither of these should be a problem to EZY.

Thanks for the update wonkerly however the issue is still causing problems. I have to deal with these issues every time they arise and we have to check if SEN are able to extend their curfew on a daily basis depending on the length of the delay.

Cavey- what issue is causing you problems exactly? Neither the lack of ATC or CAS that you cited in your original post. Fire cover is not the issue either, unless someone is telling you (in error) differently. There is also no 'curfew' for delayed scheduled flights arriving back.

It isn't just ATC and Fire that are required. The aircraft must be met by the Dispatch team, offloaded by the ramp team and then the pax dealt with by the passenger handling team. If those staff are not prepared to stay on past their normal finishing time then the aircraft cannot be accommodated by SEN when running late.
