Getonit.

Re the old hangars ,I believe there are plans to demolish the nearest hangar, as its the oldest and Im told also blocks some view of the Elmdon apron from the new control tower.

Rumours are it will then just be a car parking area air side in the short term.

Not sure when its happening though. The far hangar is a bit newer and was spruced up a bit some years ago so will probably stay. Id imagine both might have asbestos in the roof, which is an additional problem.

Im sure BHX would love to get the area redeveloped if they can find another company willing to make a committment..

A Virgin Hangar or another Air livery one to supplements Manchesters would do nicely

Hanger

I drove past the Elmdon side of the airport today and it looked like both the based RJ/146 were parked outside hangar 1 blocking the entrance. Since the demise of Duo I think that this hangar has only been used as an over spill for Flybe.

Has it been closed already

Centre Cities,

Fly Be signed a contract for Monarch Engineering to take over their maintenance. Now MAEL massive hangar is now open, their is no need for the old hangars.

In fact three Fly Be planes went into the new hangar last night for routine checks.

MAEL

Out of interest what other airlines do MAEL contract for? What other visitors could we be expecting in the near future?

Chinapattern,

Well they have just renewed the contract with TUI so expect we will see their fleet using it including 787s, that will apply across its other Euro airlines Arkefly Nordic etc.

They also have Fly Be, so with the above and their own planes thats quite a lot.

They also have Fly Dubai ,number gone through LTN facility (another this week ?)and rumours they are to switch to to BHX.

They have a contract with LOT, mostly supporting a facility in Poland, but also in the UK.

Emirates have recently nominated MAEL as its European 777 facility.

Then MAEL has very recently been named the only Boeing 787 gold star facility outside the US.

MAEL expect 40% 3rd party work within 2 yrs. So absolutely anything could turn up.

Obviously all this is spread between BHX.LTN,MAN , but think BHX will probably pick up a lot of wide bodied work as the new hangars specially designed for those, and by far the biggest of the 3 UK locations.

You can add FedEx and some easyjet work amongst others to the above MAEL list.

Taxiway B is already there, if stopping even shorter you can use taxiway T to vacate.
B and T have always been there - my question was whether the new taxiway between those two was being built yet.

Doors to automatic,

No new taxiways are being added, taxiway E is being widened slightly.

For the amount of traffic BHX gets their are ample taxiway turn offs. If we get 18-20 million passengers then we might need another.

Aegean Athens

Now bookable on some sites from at least 10 June 2014.

Twice weekly Tuesday and Saturday in 21.30 out 22.15 arrives ATH 0400 hub bing with some island flights.

Fingers crossed this works, good airline, decent route and hopefully a reasonably mix of pax.

Couple of corrections to your post on MAEL.
MAEL does not have any contract for TUI with regards to the B787, it may visit the BHX hangar if TUI need a hangar prior to H61 at Luton being modified.
MAEL are not the only Boeing 787 gold star facility outside the US either.

Mr Spotty,

Thank you for the clarifications on MAEL and Boeing Gold Care.

Thomson have just extended their maintenance contract with MAEL , but it shows only for 757/767 types and at present anyway not 787s.

News Details

I am sure the new BHX MAEL hangar will be a great asset and be well used. This including 787s under the Boeing Gold care scheme.

Nigel - the master plan I saw called for a rapid exit taxiway just past the fire station, giving about as much landing run on the extended 33 as the current runway length gives to taxiway B. Are you saying this is no longer to be built? Does that mean all aircraft will still have to roll to B, a further 400m than now? T is too close to the 33 threshold (even with the extension) to be of any real use.

Doors to automatic,

Don't forget with the runway extension more planes will be able to vacate at T landing 33,

The master plan goes to 2030 so I expect nearer that date other turn offs can be added when needed.

BHX is not going to spend any more money on a turn it currently doesn't need at present.

MAEL facility,

Amazing that they got all 3 MON A300-600Rs into the new BHX hangar at the same time yesterday with relative ease !

ATH

OP - are the A3 BHX-ATH flights only released on GDS at present? They're not available to book on the Aegean website yet. Am very keen to book as am going to a wedding there in June, really glad I hadn't booked up already to go from LHR!

Great to see the MAEL hangar finally open for business, would be nice to think in the future that some of the potential airline visitors and aircraft types might fly into BHX from a host of new destinations with pax on board as well as simply coming in empty to be fixed!

Nigel - T is going to be tight for most planes apart from maybe the Flybe Dash 8s. A turn halfway between T and B, opposite the old taxiway to the old 06/24 and terminal would be ideal. I am guessing that 33 will still be a displaced threshold?

Athens

GF

Confirmed GDS and some more public sites but you won't want to book yet going by the initial prices

I am sure it will all settle down once the formal announcement is made.

Doors to Automatic - Yes you are quite right there is taxiway showing on the proposed plans that were drawn up some time ago. There is also some really crazy stuff on there like a people mover connecting from the NEC to the eurohub as well as the existing main terminal and also more aircraft stands on the long stay car park behind where the fuel farm is now. And , of course, there is No MAEL development on these plans, just an area for ancillary car parking where the hangar is now. This current phase of works does not involve a new turn off between T & B .
