I'm no expert but I just cannot see Flybe BHX-MUC working, up against
Lufthansa! They must be joking!
Agreed, think we all said the same thing when MON launched BHX-MUC and look what happened there! Surely HEL should be top of flybe's list from BHX?

A second flight to MUC has now hit its slot system.

BE2084 arrives MUC 1725 daily ex Sat E195
BE2085 departs MUC 1755

Both flights set to start 30th March if they do go ahead.

I am sure the flight numbers at this stage are irrelevant but is it possible they could be operating for Lufthansa to cut out the LH night stop for thus saving a few bob?

They don't seem to have any specific loyalties to any of the alliances they deal with them all - BA/IAG own a share in them, they cooperate with Skyteam on Paris and Star via Brussels Airlines?

Other than that it does seem a strange choice as a flybe stand-alone service and surely it would be the 175 although that could be changed at any time. What do LH operate on BHX.....oh yes the 195. Perhaps just a coincidence.

Personally I can't see them operating for Lufthansa but
As we are all aware flybe are having to change their business model
to reflect the current state there in and with a new CEO, starting to branch
Out into Europe would not be a bad thing, I've herd from good sources that as
Part of the flybe restructuring they are going to invest resources in "core defensible bases" such as SOU BHX MAN so maybe we might see some big changes ahead.

Also I saw the daily pax figures of the loads on the Monarch MUC they were not to bad Just a bit to much to fill 200 seats a flybe E75/E95 would be perfect.

FR-down to 2 weekly flights to GRO (Girona)

Flights on Tuesday and Saturday,Summer 2014, only one being a BHX based aircraft
but
EMA gets 3 a week Wednesday,Thursday and Saturday and it looks like two are EMA aircraft (?)

Ryanair

East Midlands has been the main Ryanair base in the Midlands for some time. If the Birmingham base remains at 4 aircraft in the summer then the answer will be no.

Ryanair

Just to clarify the 2014 summer schedule.

One it is virtually a copy and paste of 2013 with a few exceptions: -

Bergamo - not released but all three flights operate from the BGY base

Barcelona - increased in April & May to 5 a week from 4 (it was 6 a week June - end of Sept)

Faro - increased to 4 a week April - June from 3 (4 a week only July-Sept)

Palma - increased to 6 a week April - August from 5 (was 6 in Sept 2013).

Perpignan - increases in April to 3 a week - none in 2012 and 2 a week in May.

ssflyer

Girona in 2014 at present matches 2013 but well down on 2012 but of course Barcelona was not operating.

Montpellier is bookable despite dire loads and I suspect that could swap with a "new route" and I presume there will be other changes.

What on earth does "Core defensible base" mean ?

Operating mostly on routes that none of the big boys do perhaps.

I think you've defined that bit of "management speak" 100% correctly!!

Thumbs up FR pricing

Just a quick note on the BHX/GRO route.
Identical return dates/flights and extras- June & September 2014 price compared to 2013 is £79pp cheaper -perhaps MOL realised his 2013 price hike hit pax nos?

A core defensible base is one where you have a loyal customer base, a good product and the carrier of choice in that market. Mock as you like, but unless you have a better suggestion, that's a good plan.

A non defensible base might be a secondary carrier which has done all of the above only for someone like BA to start in competition and blow you away, like CityJet at LCY on some routes.

Couldn't of said it better...

I think with this new fresh management
They realise they need to up their game and develop their business model
So I'm confident we are going to see big changes soon and BHX is a good base
For them, herd there closing Channel Islands base and there currently
Over crewed in flybe so be nice is Bhx took on some of this extra resources iof aircraft and crew.

Im all for more routes and rotations out of BHX so not worried about the management word spin as long as it gets us that.

ATNOTTS,

Thanks Andrew,

lets hope it leads to more routes and rotations that work for both BHX and Fly Be.

Historic day at BHX today; The new MAEL hangar opened for business .

G-MONS A300-600R arrived and was towed inside for work, sadly its now WFU for the airline.

G-OJMR A300-600R also arrived at BHX this morning and is also expected to be towed inside the hangar today.

Yes its that big, can handle 2 777-300ERs at a time.

Has anyone got any updates on the runway extension? Any pictures on how it is progressing? Is it still on course for opening in March?

Doors to automatic,

Re runway extension I had a look today, no photos though.

There has been no more work on the extension, however the end part is tarmacked which had been on the other side of the old A45.

The huge job now underway is to drop the hill down where the taxiway has to go. Needs to come down about 20 feet, there have been 2 diggers and 4 dumper trucks doing their best to start on this.

Some of the earth is being relocated to where the dip in the old A45 used to be as this area has to come up 15 feet to meet the height of the new runway extension at this point.

From tonight the runway is closed at night Mon- Fri till April. This to facilitate joining the end of the extension to the existing one. An area of about 300 metres long, of grass and earth has to be removed.

The runway will also be resurfaced during this time and attempts to take out the large humps on the current runway will be made.

The new 33 Localiser has been installed at the end of the extension, the airport service road is almost complete and the new Centro road is coming on nicely.

The downside is all the removed spoil is piling up and the last side view of the current runway is disappearing as the bund is filled out.

You will get good views of end of runway extension and new taxiway from the other side of the A45 loop where the path stays high.

Many thanks Nigel - are they building a new exit for aircraft landing on the new bit of 33? I am guessing it would be just past the fire station.

Taxiway B is already there, if stopping even shorter you can use taxiway T to vacate.

Now that MAEL is up and running and will be used for Flybe maintenance too what is the future for hangars 1 & 2 ? Surely they would not be used just for the copper chopper. Would be a shame if they are just demolished or just used for storage .
