I also paid £9.99 including all taxes and fees for the outbound Ryanair flight and I think £23 for the easyjet return leg as it offered a later flight.

At the moment there are 4 return flights daily from Luton which is increasing to 8 flights daily this winter.

Clearly this can't last and for one airline it will probably end in tears. As already pointed out airports like Birmingham are being dragged into the battle as a few savvy passengers switch airports to save a bit of money and have the bonus of many more flights to choose from.

I would have thought SAS will hang in there for the medium term to see how events down the road pan out but while road connections are good from Birmingham it is still around a 2 hour hike for much of the day. As for rail there are no direct links which could well put many people off from making the switch.

The lost passengers will be those that live outside Birmingham around the M1 corridor where it is a similar journey time to either airport.

Boeing 737-8 and LtnMan

Thanks for the heads up regarding the £9.99 one way fares to Copenhagen, just booked my return flights for two on 29th September for £39.96 total fare paid by debit card with all fees, no baggage or reserved seat so we can inform the other's' that your correct!

Nearly as good as the really low fares I was used to in the last decade where you could fly with Ryanair for a penny or a pound and on one occasion in 2008 I flew to Kraków for absolutely NOTHING.

The cheap fares are there if you look for them if you wanted to Rutankrd without having to disagree with the likes of Boeing 737-8 or LtnMan or indeed myself.

The cheap fares are certainly there - I flew BHX-DUB and back for the grand total of £19.98 with FR.

VLM

Blimey, wasn't expecting that....ANR is offered 3 x pw M-W-F as follows

ANR 11.35 BHX 12.05
BHX 14.30 ANR 17.00

It appears from the timetable to be a stand alone aircraft and not as I assumed when I first saw this linked to the WAT operation which also operates on the same days, plus Sundays

GVA is offered via ANR but with two different flight numbers and a 35 min connection so am assuming it's get off and back on the same aircraft? There are some very competitive through fares, having said that at a journey time of over 4 hours I don't think EZY need to worry! As a prop geek though I might try this!

Back in the day BASE did well on BHX-RTM/EIN although they used the smaller J31 as opposed to an F50. VLM have operated MAN-ANR in the past as well.

Um if this is a F50 with VLM to Geneva then you could be there and back on an Easy Jet 320 before the F50 lands their..whats the attraction therefore ??

Great news another new route to Antwerp commences 5th October 2015, plus connection to Geneva that could do with a business focused airline operating the route. EZY only operate Geneva for four months of the year so for eight months BHX has no link with Geneva which has always surprised me. There seems to be faith in Birmingham Airport on behalf of VLM.

That is a long turn around for a F50, is it connected to the Waterford arrival/departure times./

But not in the 8 months when EZY don't operate.....always thought that odd, would have thought it would be viable year round x7?

I don't believe it could fit a Waterford and back in that time. I would think the long turnaround is more to do with the morning GVA-ANR and afternoon ANR-GVA rotations offering the Geneva diamond dealers a quick day's business in Antwerp.

I have a horrible feeling the LTN-CPH route will all end in tears...

When easyJet and Ryanair compete like this on a route, it nothing ever ends well.

We will probably see easyJet throw the towel in, no longer willing to see their profits on the route erroded. Then once this happens, Ryanair will drop back to like twice daily and move it across the road to Stansted.

Then while this all happens, airlines like SAS will have cut the BHX route back to the bone!

I have heard rumours both airlines get extremely good discounts from CPH because it is considered a brand new route for the airport, as Luton hasn't seen a CPH connection in years. While the other London airports have all served the route in recent years and the discount cannot be offered.

If both airlines are getting heavy discounts on the route, when this ends. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

This happens all the time , CPH-BHX is predominantly a business route and the service will fluctuate during holiday periods . While the LTN-CPH battle may have an effect on the casual traveller ,companies are not going to send their employees down the M1 to save a few quid . As it is now BHX's only link to Scandinavia and flown with a star alliance member with all the connections and rewards to business travellers it will be fine .

Birmingham-Copenhagen

July figures for SK were down as the airline stopped operating the am service into Birmingham earlier this year than in 2014. The am flight recommenced earlier this year too. During the summer both services are operated by a mix of 319/320 aircraft. This coming winter with a mix of CR9 and Airbus aircraft.
Take a look at the fares ex BHX and you will see which airline is making money. You can fill 189 seats at a rock bottom price and make nothing. Crude passenger figures are interesting but don't give a full picture as to how a route is performing. For charter and Loco airlines maximum loads are essential. For legacy airlines revenue streams are totally different it's not so essential to fill every seat and are made more complex by business and flexible economy fares and of course connections to SK long-haul services.

Sample bookings
BHX-CPH SK Dep am Tue 1st Sep returning pm Thu 3rd Sep £388.14p
LUT-CPH EZY Dep am Tue 1st Sep returning pm Thu 3rd Sep £88.60P
LUT-CPH FR Dep am Tue 1st Sep returning pm Thu 3rd Sep £71.98p

BHX-CPH SK Dep am Mon 21st Sep returning pm Wed 23rd Sep £277.54p
LUT-CPH EZY Dep am Mon 21st Sep returning pm Wed 23rd Sep £42.60P
LUT-CPH FR Dep am Mon 21st Sep returning pm Wed 23rd Sep £34.98p

Of course SK also includes free check-in and a free 23kg baggage allowance.

This is not a Birmingham versus Luton post its obvious that EZY and FR are having a price war and fares are artificially low.

Flybe-Birmingham Winter 2015/6

Flybe will increase Birmingham-Hanover to twice daily M-F for the winter. This adds to capacity increases on AMS (5), DUS (5), GLA (8), EDI (8), TXL, STR (3) and MXP(2) for this coming winter season.
(numbers in brackets are number of flights per day M-F). TXL sees increased weekend service.

With the Rugby World Cup being held next month and the South African team being based at Birmingham Uni, will they fly into BHX or travel by scheduled flight to LHR and then by road to Birmingham?

"Flybe will increase Birmingham-Hanover to twice daily M-F for the winter"
--> It's even better: twice daily Sun-Fri, i.e. 13/7.

Flybe-Birmingham Winter 2015/6

Great Missed that one. Maybe they plan to introduce a third daily HAJ like STR from March? The first Sunday HAJ is similar in times to the midday STR.

Posts on flyertalk state that there have been two recent 2 class substitutions for the new 3 class flights already.
Thoughts/reasons anyone-high E loads or something else?

Emirates

ssflyer

Earlier in the month it was due to high outbound loads and later this month due to high inbound loads, as some schools in the Midlands return next Wednesday although some are 07/09.

It will be interesting to see the final figure for August, which to be honest is a great month to start an extra frequency but apparently the loads have been exceptional at times.

July Stats

The provisional CAA stats have been updated today with Berlin, Bordeaux, Dalaman and Islamabad added for International with Bratislava increased and Newquay revised on domestic to 4019, average 65 or 83%. Berlin averaged 67 or 76% and Bordeaux even better at 74 per flight 83%. I will post the full figures in the next day or so.
