A core defensible base is one where you have a loyal customer base, a good product and the carrier of choice in that market. Mock as you like, but unless you have a better suggestion, that's a good plan.
A non defensible base might be a secondary carrier which has done all of the above only for someone like BA to start in competition and blow you away, like CityJet at LCY on some routes.
