BHX - Record February 2015

Birmingham Airport continues to experience significant growth in 2015, as almost 650,000 passengers passed through the terminal in February, an 8.4% increase on the same month last year.

February saw the Airport handle 630,231 passengers in total, which follows on from a record-breaking start to the year in January, beating its previous record for the month set in 2008.
Scheduled traffic in February accounted for 89% of the total figure, with charter passengers making up the remaining 11%.
Paul Kehoe, the airport’s chief executive, said: “The great start we made in 2015 has been followed up with another strong performance in February, which is a positive sign for the rest of the year.
“February was boosted thanks to families choosing to fly from Birmingham during a busy half-term week, as well as the introduction of flights to Reykjavik with Icelandair at the start of the month.
“There are many new routes, served by new carriers, set to launch in the months ahead too, including Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga with Norwegian, Barcelona with Vueling and New York JFK with American Airlines. These, coupled with the recent announcement that Birmingham will host a programme of non-stop charter flights to Beijing in the summer with Hainan Airlines, means passengers flying from Birmingham have more choice than ever before in 2015.”
One hundred percent growth was seen on scheduled routes to Hamburg, Oporto, Gdansk, Reykjavik and Toulouse, as well as growth to Las Palmas (+90.7%) Milan (+81.1%) and Amritsar (+69.3%).
Charter services to Montego Bay (+100.0%), Hannover (+100.0%) and Izmir (+100.0%) also experienced significant growth.

BHX & Guangzhou to work together to develop China air route

Birmingham Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise a working relationship and commit to developing links between the two cities.

At a ceremony held at the Routes Asia conference in Kunming, China recently, the MOU was signed by Birmingham Airport’s aviation development director William Pearson and Jammes Shen, director of aviation marketing at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport.

The agreement, which sees the two airports become ‘Sister Airports’, signifies commitment by both parties to collaborate on joint marketing campaigns, policy co-ordination and sharing best practice
undefined

Jammes Shen, director of aviation marketing at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport with Birmingham Airport’s aviation development director William Pearson, signing the MOU at the Routes Asia conference in Kunming, China.

Speaking at the signing, Birmingham Airport’s aviation development director William Pearson, said: “We are delighted to establish this new partnership with Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, which we hope will pave the way for potential flights between the two cities in the future.

“This signing reflects our intent to work together, forging an effective working relationship and to develop mutually advantageous opportunities that will benefit both airports, as well as the cities of Birmingham and Guangzhou.”

Mr Jammes Shen, director of aviation marketing at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, added: “Baiyun Airport and Birmingham Airport have signed a strategic co-operation framework agreement which will enhance the co-operation in areas such as hub construction, airport operation, joint marketing, airport service enhancement and airport resource sharing. By signing this agreement, Baiyun & Birmingham Airport can also contribute to the rapid development of the aviation market of Guangzhou and Birmingham.”

This partnership follows the recent announcement that non-stop charter flights between Birmingham and China will recommence in the summer. Operated by Hainan Airlines using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft, the twice weekly service to Beijing will begin on Friday 3rd July.

Non-stop flights to China from Birmingham are possible thanks to an investment by Birmingham Airport to extend its runway to enable longer haul flights. The development was opened in April 2014 by the Prime Minister and was inaugurated by the first Birmingham-Beijing charter service in July 2014.

We shouldn't get too excited re this new signing agreement between BHX and Guangzhou.

The marketing spin here, is almost identical wording to a very similar agreement between BHX and Chicago airport ,which are already sister airports... signed 3 years ago.

and do we have flights to Chicago ??

Still every step in the right direction keeps us in Guangzhou's minds for the future perhaps.

I think that MAN and Beijing signed a similar sort of agreement a few years ago.

And still no service - not yet at least.....

Lufthansa

Hardly a few days gone by after Lufthansa announced that part of the Munich 195 fleet is off to Austrian than LH2512 is now showing as an A319 from 1st August for the rest of the summer.

LH2508 & 2510 still show as the 195 all summer at the moment and no doubt winter has yet to be updated.

This after LH956 FRA-BHX upgrades to the A321 for summer although no as with Lufthansa that remains subject to change.

What were the chances of MAN getting a Chinese biz jet in on the day of a rumoured announcement...think its been a while since the last biz jet of Chinese origin.

He could have said that somebody knowing that the Chinese bizjet was due that day came to an incorrect conclusion hence making the apparent co-incidence.

February Route analysis (schedule and the odd charter)

Passenger figures from the CAA Provisional stats and average per flight as ever from various sites such as libhomeradar, flybe, a BHX Bl*g. Load Factors estimated based on seat plans.

Added a couple of IT and domestic. Points to take into account is flybe's flight sale allowed flights up to around 10 February for £15 and this boosted domestic and some International flights. Emirates is simply amazing and the first time over 400 per flight as double daily. Only the second month of Air India daily and a fair figure really. PIA obviously the highest load factor for ages due to the lack of flights.

American Press Release - the last sentance is interesting

US airline says it is keen to promote city as a destination ahead of launch of flights to JFK Airport in May

Birmingham has a valuable new ally in the battle to promote the city in the US – in the shape of the world's largest airline group.

American Airlines will start flights to JFK Airport in New York on May 8, as work begins to attract more Americans to the region.

David Thomas, UK director of sales at American Airlines, said with the city boasting a strong business offer alongside top restaurants, shops and sporting attractions, it was a significant alternative to automatically flying to London.

His comments came just weeks after Birmingham Airport started promoting itself as "Shakespeare's Airport" in China – and Mr Thomas believes a similar approach could yield results stateside.

He said: "Speaking as an American, if you were to ask where Shakespeare was from most would probably say London. So we want to promote how great it is here.

"We have to show this is an alternative to London Heathrow. A lot of people are scared of Heathrow and Birmingham has a lot to offer.

"There needs to be some PR in the States to show how easy it is to get here. Part of the reason Americans don't think of Birmingham as a place they can get to is because of the flights.

"Hopefully now we have this service it will naturally progress as people see it as an opportunity."

He added: "You have a lot to offer here, with things like Shakespeare and cricket, it's just getting the message out.

"The message about Birmingham gets lost behind London but there are great restaurants here and lots to see. Part of what we are trying to do is promote Birmingham as an alternative to London."

American Airlines expects the new route to provide nearly 100,000 seats a year.

It will complement the existing route between Birmingham and Newark operated by United Airlines.

The flights also represent a return of sorts for British Airways (BA), as it will be operated as a code share. That means the two airlines will share in the profits, flights from Birmingham can be booked on the BA website and the flights allow customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.

Mr Thomas added: "BA doesn't fly here but we have a close relationship with BA and doing this strengthens our relationship with them.

"If we make a profit on this then BA does as well, so they are just as interested in seeing this work as we are."

The American Airlines flight will operate daily, arriving from JFK into Birmingham at 7.10am and depart for the return leg at 10am.

Mr Thomas said he was confident in the market and believed the Birmingham flights give American Airlines reach to customers in the west of England and Wales.

He said on top of business travellers and New York visitors, people looking to travel to Orlando were a large market, although presently direct flights to Orlando were not on the agenda.

He added: "There is strong local demand for JFK and we think there is a hole in the market.

"We also see an opportunity for people getting to the west coast – especially LA and San Francisco with services on our A321 aircraft. There is also strong demand to get to Orlando, Cancun and Las Vegas."

He added: "Every city is unique. The corporate base here is unique, so you'd expect a lot of corporate business out of Birmingham, whereas in Manchester there are also of people taking family trips out to the States. Birmingham is unique and for us you have to treat it so."

The last time Americans came over in their droves via BHX was the mid 90's to remember a WW2 battle in Europe. They filled the BA 767 service all week as well as flying with Maersk to AMS. I remember that because I was crew operating the flights.

BA's marketing must have worked then and I hope AA's marketing does even better now.

I'm pretty sure there is a demand for a direct MCO flight, if MAN can fill out 2 x 744 a day surely something 330 or 787 size Is doable. Bhx is my airport of choice but five times in the last two years I've has to go with the MAN option.

Theres actually up to 5 flights a day from MAN to Orlando using B744/A332/B787, so, you would expect BHX to have more than 1 flight a week to such a popular destination.

Except BHX suffers from a proximity to LHR that MAN lacks. BHX long haul struggles going west, YYZ is another route I always thought was under served.

flybe dropping good routes!

From OP's FEB passenger stats :

Toulouse 4487 63 81%
Waterford 1425 59 76%

These 2 routes are being dropped at the end of this month . Waterford is gleefully being picked up by another airline but as for TLS I cannot see another airline suitable to fly it at a daily service that is required. Flybe in its various forms has been operating that route on and off for over 20 years so I can't believe that all of a sudden they decide it is not making money. 81% L.F in February for goodness sake for what was traditionally a summer vacation route.
Thinking about this I have come to the conclusion that with the flying time there and back (4 hours) together with the turnaround time , Flybe think that the aircraft could make more money doing a shorter route where it could do maybe 2 and half sectors in that time.
Hopefully they will have YET another change of heart and reinstate it in the near future.

Just a question about the routes that Flybe are dropping from Bhx

Are most of these off peak middle of the day routes ?.I just wonder if they are trying to create more slack in the schedule to keep the rest more reliable and more closely matching their crewing levels

manx crab

Is this a plausible explanation or excuse for poor performing routes or a mixture of both? Virtually every route has a late morning or early afternoon timing. The Q400 schedule from next week is quite light with long turnarounds considering flybe said they were going for better utilisation per their financials. To be fair it did happen this winter but it has resulted in many cancellations. Here are the cancelled routes and approximate departure times.

Cologne 10.10 (Was a based aircraft first flight but now goes to Inverness)
Waterford 10.50
Knock 11.25
Toulouse 13.15
Florence 11.00 (believed to be aircraft performance issues at FLR)
Oslo 11.20 (Bordeaux restarts and Oslo could be back in winter)
Reykjavik 11.15 (Icelandair started)
Alicante 12.00 - ????
Hamburg 16.50 (Milan returns to double daily and competition from 4U)
Palma 12.00 ish ???
Ibiza 21.30 ???

BHX does seem to operate with 11 aircraft which is only one less operational Q400 although Deauville when it starts seems to require another based Q400 from late June. However 11 routes have gone and only one aircraft so maybe EU261 considerations again?

getonittt

Toulouse is the mystery of all the routes although how they could not come to an arrangement with all parties to make Waterford work is a disappointment. As for Toulouse I agree I can't see any other airline looking at this other than Cityjet on behalf of Air France (flybe flight does not show on AF site), which is pie-in-the-sky as neither airport has a Cityjet base and perhaps not the time for them to be taking on such routes.

As I have indicated above it doesn't seem to be getting extra sectors out of the aircraft, as you can see from next Monday's schedule. Fares always seem reasonable on TLS and WAT but the rest I can say there have been poor loads or low fares, mixed with the sector length except Florence but they obviously don't want to keep it on with the 195.

Monday 30 March

Q400 - 1 06.50 ABZ 10.20 - 12.15 BHD 15.00 - 15.30 NQY 18.35 - N/S
Q400 - 2 06.40 BHD 11.55 - 14.15 ABZ 17.45 - 18.10 HAJ 22.15
Q400 - 3 09.15 INV 18.00 - 18.35 ABZ - 22.05

IOM Aircraft arrives 10.30 and sits until 15.00

1 x 195 and 7 x 175's

EI-A330-300

Cheers for that, there are rumours that it won't go un-served for long but back to Stobart would be a shock.

Monarch

Another reduction for summer by the look of it, the much rumoured 148 seat 737 is now showing in the seat-maps now. I have not got the full schedule as ones attention span is limited at my age when it comes to making dummy bookings. I found flights to DLM, TFS, FAO NCE, VCE, FCO and BCN on the 737.

Does anyone know why all the publicity states the AA departure time to JFK is 10am when our departure time since we booked in November has been listed as 9am and on checking our booking yesterday has now in fact changed to 8.45am?

Rumours are rife that City of Derry may be up on the departure/arrival boards again very soon.

Anyone heard similar?
