As much as id like to see long-haul from the regions i doubt any airlines are going to want to start transatlantic routes from regional airports in the current economic climate.

I can't see LBA being next for TA service. Luton, Newcastle, Stansted and maybe even Aberdeen are ahead of LBA for sure. AA, CO and DL and their 75Ws have to be the airlines being targeted.

This could be a circular argument, but personally i can see that the next region to secure a ny service could easily be yorkshire - it's relatively prosperous with a large population, more so than northern ireland, and strathclyde. The only hindrance may still be proximity to manchester, but that same proximity doesn't seemed to have affected glasgow or edinburgh.

Which airport isnt wanting a direct link to new york??
LBA,NCL,ABZ,DTV,EXT etc.......
would be nice if it did happen im sure Jet2 are looking at it from LBA and NCL
problem is though to make it work they may need a codeshare with another us airline?

I think they will be targeting a US carrier as has been mentioned. LS would just not be able to do it from LBA.
I have a feeling they may add Toronto and Orlando if they do get the 767s though...

Those Viscounts were just fine!! I used the service weekly for many years, and lost count of the number of times we had to divert to East Mids on the return trip, and coach back, getting home at rediculous hours!! Usually, the whole of Leeds Bradford was completely clear, with a bank of low cloud/fog blotting out the airfield!! Two or three approaches later, we were trundling back South.
I also remember Eddie Waring was a regular passenger. It was before the days of seat allocation, and there was a massive scrum at the foot of the steps. Somehow, he was always the first into the aircraft!!
Happy days!

I agree with those correspondents that say that it would ideally be an American carrier to do the route(s), whatever that may be. My money would be on Continental, given their success in the UK regions, particularly Bristol with its similar topographical and meteorological characteristics to Leeds.
However, I must take issue with the "by the middle of the next decade" part. We need to do better than that.

(... and that they can fly transatlantic on a comfortable plane not a 757.)
I guess BA must have made a mistake then with their A318 service to New York. The size of the aircraft has nothing to do with seat space for the information of those not experienced in flying.

I do hope and wish Tony Hallwood well on getting Trans Atlantic services into the Yorkshire region. He did it for Bristol so hopefully he can do it again for LBA….
But i just can’t see New York coming anytime soon. Not with this bloody recession on-going. If they do manage to get a New York service with-in the next 5 years hopefully it won’t be with Jet2 but with one of the big American Airliners with a Boeing 757 type service.
Hopefully while in the process of trying to acquire a New York service they should look into reinstating charter flights to Toronto and maybe an Orlando service with the likes off say Jet2/Jet2hoildays and other charter companies like Thomas Cook and Canada affair.

I think we should let LS stick with what their good at.
Low Cost Short Haul.
We all remember what happened at BZ Capital when they 'Expanded' overnight!!
We the 'Brits' are the Short Haul Experts.
The 'Yanks' are the long Haul Experts.

New York flights
The runway at Leeds needs to be extended by a couple of hundred metres or so (at the Leeds end) to allow the 757s to take off at higher weights and still clear Otley Chevin. Once that is done, flights to NewYork could work.
When Jet2 did those four trips to NewYork last year, two of them had to make a tech stop for fuel. This adds cost to the trip. No airline will want to run the route when a large percentage of the trips will have to do extra tech stops.

Hi There.
Heard today that KLM city hopper are to upgrade the LBA - Amsterdam route from the current Fokker 70 operation to the brand new Embrear 190's from the start of the summer 2010 schedule.
Has anyone else heard anything about this. Or do we know if the LBA crews have started there training for the type yet?

Further Developments ?
When is the Flybe Dash 8 G-FLBA having its naming ceremony to cement the opening of the new base ?
When is Ryanair announcing their third based aircraft, especially bearing in mind the Easyjet announcement this morning from down the A1 ?

Yes it was a busy night for the guys at LBA, With diverts in from:
Liverpool
Manchester
East Midlands
Blackpool
Humberside
Duram-tees valley
Newcastle
It was a pity that LBA didnt have more room on the apron as they had to refuse one PIA A310, that one eventually diverted to Heathrow...
