There is also the possibility that BA could codeshare on LGW-DUB. They are cutting back on some LGW routes in 2008 (NCE, PRG and possibly some others reduced) in order to free up capacity to retain some of the GB & BMED routes. That would fill the A320s and maybe even create scope for A321s if some of the options were converted and LHR didn't require them.
However, EI might want to have more aircraft and slots before agreeing that to ensure they can handle both their own and BA's traffic.

I wouldnt be surprised if BA cut the DUB-LGW route in favour for a codeshare with EI. I know BA carry a fair amount of pax ex DUB-LGW-MCO, but with EI's new MCO service, numbers may drop off. Also, the fact that EI are offering low fares, and FR, as always is offering rock-bottom fares, theres not much room for BA. The 737's used for the route could probably be allocated to ex GT/Bmed routes, or new North African/Eastern Europe routes where they can make more money

The Irish Independent speculated today about the Ryanair's influence on EI share price now and in the future.
NO doubt it was pure coincidence that the Aer Lingus share price dipped below €2 on the same week that the former state-owned airline began legal action to try and force Ryanair to offload its 29.44 per cent stake in the company.
(...)
However, since the EU blocked the Ryanair bid in June, [the price] has been downhill all the way for Aer Lingus.
The shares are now more than 40 per cent off their peak.
Without the Ryanair takeover, premium investors have been forced to take a much harder look at Aer Lingus. Its first half results, which showed operating profits falling by more than three-quarters to just €2.6m, were abysmal. Meanwhile, the industrial relations difficulties it had with its pilots when setting up its Belfast base and the success of the airline's staff in delaying a desperately needed cost-cutting programme for over 12 months, demonstrate that the bolshie Aer Lingus trade unions are still in the semi-state comfort zone.
As if all that weren't bad enough, Aer Lingus' decision to scrap its recently-established Dubai route demonstrates that chief executive Dermot Mannion's long-haul strategy is in tatters.
All of which leads me to wonder, is it a good idea for Aer Lingus to try and eject Ryanair? At the moment the Ryanair stake is just about the only thing propping up the Aer Lingus share price. If Ryanair were forced to sell its stake in the current market, God only knows how much the Aer Lingus share price would fall by.
Dermot Mannion should be careful what he asks for. He just might get it.
I'm not involved with EI nor with FR, I'm also not their shareholder. If I was, I'd certainly have some fears about the future trend of the share price if FR would have to get rid of its stake...

What this professional journalist failed to notice although it was staring him in the face and inconvenient to his pro ryanair rant was the price of oil and the general fall in irish shares which prompted the fall in most shares including ryanairs. As a shareholder in Aer Lingus myself I would welcome Ryanair selling their shares to allow an open market in the shares and a more representitive value on the company.I would welcome investors who want the company to survive and thrive for everyones benifit instead of a shareholder whos only interest is the destruction of Aer lingus for there own enrichment.

This could well be on the cards alright ! How can you have BA, FR AND EI all operating this route ? I noticed there in the summer Willie made a sly move outsourcing BA's ticket agents operation to Aviance in DUB. The ex BA girls now work for Aviance and don't retain BA uniforms !

I think this has been the situation for a while now, certainly since before the summer, possibly around Easter time, I certainly passed a BA flight boarding ans twas Aviance hi-vis vests, and uniforms all round. Also the BA and BD check-in desks are co-located, was this always the case?

I dont know why EI are being utterly obstinate on 3rd party handling. You'd think one 737 towbar for the BA flight would kill them. IMHO EI could make a good killing at DUB and ORK handling carriers. At the least, their partners, BA and AA would make sense, even is just to simplify Lounge access at DUB.

Aviance have handled the BA flights for a long time the girls in the BA uniforms were just for the ticket desk. LH,SK are just 2 other airlines that have staff in their own uniforms but have a handling agent doing the check-in and boarding etc.

IB,TK,US,CO and BD are some others.

I work for a company associated with Aviance so I can see what loads are like on the BA flights and t be honest they are no different to last year before EI restarted DUB-LGW.

Loads average about 50 with about 10 of them being business class passengers.

They still manage to achieve full loads on Friday/Sunday evening etc.

I would not be too worried about LGW. I think all three carriers will do very well on the route. BA is the only one to offer business to LGW, and the loads seem strong. IMHO EI would have been better off in LCY, and given cityJet a run for their money, but the A320 dont fit in LCY, and I dont see EI getting the (awfully expensive to operate) A318 either, they seem pretty happy to stick to the A320, despite it being a smidge too large to be optimal to non-LON UK. The A321s have their little niche too, I wonder if EI would consider a few more, maybe to round the fleet to 10 or 12, for like likes of AMS, CDG, FRA?

Dublin-Helsinki

Dublin-Helsinki appears to have been axed from January 15th. Presumably not enough demand for the route in addition to Ryanair's 4 weekly service to Tampere.

That didn't last long at all; wasn't that one of the four new routes added this Winter?

It was one of the recent launches

Winter was an odd time to launch Helsinki. It's much better as a summer destination.

I doubt the Ryanair flight to Tampere had massive impact. It would be like flying to Shannon to go to Dublin or Bristol to go to London. It's several hours away by train.

It's a route where One World might have been useful considering Finnair's considerable onward to Asia network.

77% load on AMS-ORK last night.

I find it very hard to believe that a flight which is usually in the high 70s or low 80s would just slip into the mid 50s for now good reason. I'm sure the threatened strike took 30+ people off the aircraft.

If that was happening on every flight, a lot of revenue must have been lost.

2 things ; 1, Aer lingus are not dropping helsinki, their schedule will tell you that and secondly, the loads at this time of year are always light as people save their travel plans for Christmas. So no more nonsense Aer Lingus stories please.

It's not a nonsense story. It's not a comment on average EI loads. I know the exact numbers on board that flight across each of the last three weeks. I don't think it's a coincidence that there were 30-40 fewer than on an average week in the week there was a threatened strike.

Now, maybe there is some unusual reason like a large group who cancelled at the last minute, so I was hoping to see what had been happening on other routes to see whether this was normal and how much money the threatened strike had cost the airline.

Their timetable means nothing. They frequently put flights for sale and then pull them afterwards. Also they are not the quickest at changing the timetables on the website so they may just not have got around to changing it yet.

Nonsense. November and January are the worst two performing months for passenger loads in every shorthall airline worldwide. Just have a look at all the various airline websites and I can guarantee that 90% of them will have seat sales on at the moment for travel in early december and january.

Third time lucky.

I'm comparing November data with November data, so what the average November data is like is irrelevant.

Some good news from EI ...

DM was speaking at an aviation conference in London recently and spoke of plans to accelerate the short haul fleet plan, beyond the planned 42 units.

There was also a hint of more new bases.

A new fleet plan will be produced shortly.

On the subject of HEL, in the latest (December) CARA magazine, it says that it will now be year round rather than seasonal. That would hardly be in there if it was being dropped.

It looks like they're dropping some rotations rather than the route.

Aer Lingus arrival at Belfast

Does anyone know whats the plan for the commencement of the BFS base. When will the first aircraft arrive?

Will it be a new one or is it too early to know which reg or when?
