Aer Lingus chief bullish over Belfast move

Aer Lingus will go all out to capture the corporate and public service market when it opens its Belfast hub, its commercial director said today.

Enda Corneille said the airline, which launches its first routes to Amsterdam and Barcelona on December 10 – adding six more including London Heathrow before the end of February – planned to be profitable in year one.

Three planes, named after Irish saints, will be based in Belfast and Mr Corneille said an expansion of the base to five or six aircraft – bringing with them many more destinations – was a possibility down the line.

I was under the impression that Belfast was now going to be starting with only two based aircraft.

Weather must be nice on his planet. You don't make money in year 1 by launching routes on which all bar 2 have direct competition from airlines with a lower cost base. Bearing in mind said airlines established the market in the first place, they're hardly going to roll over and die quietly. Given the mess created so far by Aer Lingus in trying to cross the border I wouldn't hold my breath on the possibility of profit anytime soon

I think for the launch in December two will be based in BFS and a thrid will arrive later. As Enda Corneille said today, they could expand to 5 or 6 aircraft at a later date.

Does anyone have any idea how the sales are going for Belfast-based routes so far?

A quick look at Amsterdam in the period between the base opening and Christmas shows only 2 flights of 28 on sale above the minimum price they are charging. This compares to 18 of 28 in Cork and 55 of 70 in Dublin.

Also, I notice it's not available for sale on the KLM site yet. That has to be hurting bookings. Is there a reason it's not there considering base-launch is now only 6 weeks away?

Sales started off badly mainly down to the lack of advertising and the Shannon issue. Earlier this month Aer Lingus announced that routes were selling well, with 20,000 seats sold accross the 9 routes.

Enda Corneille has said twice that bookings were going well, he also stated that fares will remain low in the run up to the launch because they want the planes to be full especially after Christmas when demand is low.

Does anyone know, where in the US, EI intend to operate when they come off the DXB route next year?

It has not been decided (at least publically) that EI will pull out of DXB at this stage. There have been persistant rumors about it for some time though. There have also been whispers that EK might send a 772 if/when EI pull out. Personally I believe they should market DXB better and work harder on getting their product up to scratch. Also being EIs first east bound service they need to make it work IMHO.

Enda Cornille has said no new long haul routes should be expected in teh next 12 months, but they would be looking at upping frequencies instead.This falls in line with the commitment to SNN long haul expiring at the end of Summer 2008, expect a major revamp then, Id assume.

Been very surprised not to see EK on the DXB route earlier.

Sending a B772 seems abit quick for EK. They usually wait for a route to grow on the A332 and then increase the aircraft.

When this A332 becomes available, it launches other routes with it! This is what we have seen with UK destinations such as MAN, GLA, BHX etc. and is currently being seen at NCL. When the route grows the aircraft will increase to either B772 or B77W.

Would be very surprised not to see EK in DUB by next winter with their Airbuses. Obviously, DUB is a big city and can support alot more passengers than the likes of BHX and GLA but the airline has to start most routes the same (obviously places such as LHR and SIN can be taken from this equation).

Shame to see EI leave the route. Expect an increase in US routes.

SFO goes daily; DXB out

Much as expected, DXB to go, but SFO is expected to go daily. No new routes next year.

Aer Lingus will withdraw their transatlantic routes from Shannon and transfer them to its new hub at Belfast International Airport next year, Ryanair's Michael O'Leary predicted yesterday.

Mr. O'Leary said: 'Aer Lingus's transatlantic flights will be gone from here by next September. Take it as read. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind and I have no insight. But my view is that Aer Lingus transferring Shannon - Heathrow to Belfast is a pre-cursor for Aer Lingus to transfer the transatlantic flights up there as well.'
The director of Shannon Airport, Martin Moroney, has confirmed that Aer Lingus have not made any commitments to the airport beyond next autumn.

I am not so sure about EI giving up all T/A SNN flights.
They carry good loads, especially in summer, to/from SNN.
What would be the gain operating from BFS? Yield would be similar.
I think its just MOL stirring it again

If EI decide to go TA from BFS, then depending on the loadfactors and any competition that may arise there could be some advantages to BFS-SNN and onwards given the US boarder checks in SNN. That said, would TA from BFS reduce loads on BFS-LHR?

CO just picked up two slot pairs from GB who sold four pairs (BA, COx2, QR)
I wonder if the LGW-LHR slot swap with CO can be unravelled enough to give some wiggle room on the SNN-LHR route, although it would mean having to pay CO for the LGW slots.

Would EI not be more interested in a LHR-JFK service than Belfast to JFK? Would mean the Heathrow routes out of Belfast would not be affected and may actually add to loads on any Heathrow to US flights?

Aer lingus could'nt compete on any route out of lhr due to the service standard provided - even the new seat being fitted to the 330's was ditched by Virgin 2 yrs ago due to it being crap!!!!

This is an incredicble figure, now we know why fares were so high in the past. Aerlingus were feeding the gravy train at Shannon.
