I also can't believe no one took aerlingus as a name before. Damm, that could have been me. As for the rumour. Now that would be one unholy alliance. Ryanair and Emirates. As for the poster being from Longford. That is suspicious, I never heard of anyone from Longford before.

EK can't even afford their own planes right now let alone another airline. May have been discussed but predict it will go nowhere.

Shightly off thread BUT
AerLingus are to reinstate their Shannon Heathrow route.
Does that mean a reduction in the Belfast Heathrow schedules as these flights use the Heathrow slots previously reserved for the Shannon route....?????

I ALWAYS fly AerLingus.... except that I live in Hong Kong

Aer Lingus Recruitment

Aer Lingus looking for First Officers for Gatwick base to commence in April 2009.No Captains required at this time.Where are the aircraft coming from.I guess the union will have to step in yet again to protect future pilots .

There's been no mention of what's happening in Belfast in the media. Only that routes will recommence in Shannon sometime in March.

I would imagine that the LGW crew will be hired under the same T&C's as the BFS base crew so therefore there may be no grounds for any action by the Irish based pilots as they have already cleared the new T&Cs for UK bases.
As for Captains, a number of DUB based FO's transferred to BFS for their command, maybe they are expecting something similar to happen for LGW.

Aer Lingus have a few new A320's due to be delivered in the new year. Also the DUB-LGW route is to be increased to 6 per day meaning that they could easily use DUB based aircraft to operate european rotations only with LGW based crew.

2 slot pairs currently serving DUB-LHR are being utilised for SNN-LHR. No change to the Belfast schedule.

A tie up beteen EI & EK has been rumoured since Dermot Manion took over at EI.

I don't think they are going to have a short haul base anytime soon as any fees they pay to SNN pay for FR to fly for free. We shall see.
No doubt EI are going back on SNN-LHR paying a lot less fees.
SNN offered a sharp reduction when EI pulled out, so now I'm sure they're taking them up on the offer.
Probably getting a very similar deal as Air France do on CDG.

A lot of people find it hard to believe that MO'L will keep many of his promises so Aer Lingus are acting on that and making his offer less attractive by cutting fuel surcharges, adding SNN-LHR and launching LGW. I wouldn't call that pathetic, they are protecting their airline from a hostile take over.

What I find funny is that MOL had called on Aer Lingus to cut their surcharge with monthly outbursts for over a year and days after yet another outburst, Aer Lingus cut the surcharge but MOL was suddenly deeply concerned what impact it would have on profits!

So what is he, a concerned investor or rival out to damage Aer Lingus? If he can't make his mind up why should anyone else.

Going back on SNN-LHR was one of the worst kept secrets internally in Aer Lingus for the past few months. I don't think anyone would argue that in the past it was a profitable route, but the reality was it was only marginally so. The fee's being payed to Shannon airport were ridiculous in comparison to those being paid by Ryanair, and coupled to the this the cost of running a base at the airport from a staff cost was just not viable in the long term.

With the relaunch of the route the picture is fundamentally different. The staff cost base is significantly lower and the new fee's being paid for operating there both on this route and on the transatlantic operation to Shannon Airport are far less. The route is now viable again and Aer Lingus have been negotiating this for some time.

Michael O Leary knew Aer Lingus were going back on the route. He just wanted to the be the person seen by the people of the local area as the saviour of the West and would be the one to reintroduce it. Unfortunately, you don't just decide these things overnight and he was well aware of the plan to launch it again by Aer Lingus for the summer schedule in 2009 once the local staff had signed off on the new work practice agreement. The new fees with Shannon had already been agreed. Hence he made the statement two days before the said staff agreement was signed.

...

so how much are EI paying at SNN? They could hardly have the same deal as FR in that they get MONEY BACK based on the pax carried???

by the way ...how does SNN finance this type of deal???

There IS a space at LGW now. traffic has fallen off a cliff ( a smallish one ) since XL went under and the bulk of the long haul moved to Heathrow. Hence there is a once in a decade opportunity to get slots at a busy London airport, so it is undeniably an opportunity. I think the level of co-operation with BA might be a fundamental here, but good luck with having the balls to get on board here.
It certainly is a stroke of brillance by aer lingus management, now instead of just competing with ryr on most of it's routes out of ireland, it gets to compete with the rest of the big europian airlines out of gatwick, i am sure easy and virgin will welcome them with open arms and fair trading.

Michael O Leary knew Aer Lingus were going back on the route. Yep your sure are right, the aer lingus management sure have it all worked out, just like the original float they worked out with the goverment to raise capital, opps forgot to factor in the gotcha ryr factor. Then they had to relay on wealthy irish businessman and the pilots to bail them out. brillant all of them.

I seriously doubt that. EK can afford their planes as they keep coming! I don't know what state Dubai is in but as it is owned by the government, who are still making a substantial amount of money from oil (hedging), they aren't going anywhere soon.

This would provide Emirates with the base between UAE and US.

Will be interesting.....

Cityjet reaction to LHR route restored : looks like they're hanging on in the short term at least but i can see their prices being an issue..would be ideal to have both

Interesting idea? % change in aircraft movements are interesting.
