Leeds Approach
The Inverness link from Leeds/Bradford is an onward flight from Southampton. But with Flybe going to offer a direct service from Southampton, Eastern must think that there is not enough demand to justify operating a service originating just from Leeds.
And how the hell Flybe plan on uplifting 80 pax from Southampton to Inverness I do not know. Ryanair tried to fill a B737 and failed, even with their low fares from Liverpool.
All this is just spoiling tactics from Flybe jumping on other peoples routes because they do not have a clue where to put all these shiny new Dash 8's
But do bear in mind that Eastern are not walking away from the threat of Flybe as they have just increased the Leeds to Southampton to 4 daily monday to friday utilising the Inverness aircraft.

Hi W.B.,
all points well made. Even with the lowest of fairs- demand is not sufficient to fill certain planes on certain routes (ryanair). Flybe will 'jump on' other people's routes that is the nature of the game. While I am pleased about the planned frequency upgrade to both Southampton and Aberdeen from Leeds I do not see it being successful in the not too long run. It does smack of desparation to me. They announced the flights and they were not even able to be booked for a few days! You perhaps disagree but I really think they need to change their strategy. It will be interesting to see what happens in the year ahead.

What does "Revenue positive" mean? That they actually take some money (as opposed to giving all the seats away free), that they cover the DOCs and make a contribution, or that they make a profit?

I am aware the land has been secured for a potential runway extension, also there are plans to build a taxi way, this will only happen if the amount of aircraft increase, as it will help with quicker turn arounds

That was in the Masterplan before LBA was sold. I feel the extension at the start of 32 would bring huge benefits especially if combined with the building of a parallel taxyway running from Delta to the new end of 14/Start of 32. I cringe everytime something heavy lands 14 as the LDA is so short and there is no safe overrun unlike 32. (Remember the L1011)
Shaheen would be the first airline in a while that this sort of work would really benefit, but if the new owners are serious about attracting long haul then this should be given priority. EK from Dubai or Jet2 to the US East coast would be more of an option with a small extension. Shaheen would probably be able to go direct in all but very hot nil wind days with a full load.
Come on Bridgepoint have a look at the runway not just the terminal.

The owner, as venture capitalists on a short-term timescale, are interested in making money. Thats the way business operates folks.
They won't give a stuff where the money comes from be it short, medium or long haul.
A very expensive and locally unpopular extension will not be high on their agenda.
A cold shower for extension optimists.

Part of the attraction to the target market is the ability to take sought-after items with them. This includes such things as patio heaters, microwaves and, in one case, a lawn mower. There might be other items but they are the most unusual pieces of personal baggage that I have seen so far.
Therefore a 'generous' baggage allowance is a big plus.
On the plus side, the loads so far have included a large number of families with small children which helps keep the weight down.

Anyway, to get this thread back on track, I was interested to read on the LBIA website that the first punters to check in for the first flight were from Oldham. I wonder how many more wer from PIA territory.

The vast majority I have seen or spoken to have been from West Yorks. A few Mancs and a family from the East Midlands. The pax from West Yorkshire, especially those from Bradford, say that LBA is very much more convenient for them, especially those living in East and North Bradford. These would previously have been in the PIA / Airblue market, though only by default. I would be interested to know what motivated the Manc pax, other than price. However, good on them for choosing LBA over MAN! The demise of UKIA, unfortunate though it was for the employees, has ultimately been to Shaheen's benefit as well, it would appear.

Hi
Good news yet again about Shaheen Air’s long haul operations out of LBA
The airline is adding a 3rd weekly service to Islamabad from March 3rd. The new rotation will be operated on Fridays along with the existing Thursday and Sunday flights.
Also the outbound flight has been altered a little. Instead of departing at 22:00 it will depart 30 mins later at 22:30 from the above date.

Yes the Chevin gives us a displaced threshold on runway 14 due to the angle of the approach needed to clear it and an undershoot area for a possible land short situation (BA777 type incident) and as the runway was built to the new standards 32 also has a displaced threshold for the same undershoot reason. I think Bristol has thresholds almost at the ends of its runways like Newcastle and Durham Tees-Valley so no lost landing distance but only small undershoot areas as they were built under the old legislation. Also the fact the Chevin is higher than the airfielld and within the axis of the runway affects take off performance on most of the aircraft that use 32 for departure. Also for Hooded My A300 has Cat2 with 100ft Vert Vis decision height and 300m Rvr although we are hoping for Cat 3A 50ft and 200m rvr this year and Lba would present no problem for us as we are normally quite light.
I also worry about heavy aircraft and runway 14 landings !
