A bit of humor at last. I had to have a rest this afternoon as all this stuff was beginning to do my head in and then on top of everything else Spurs were beaten by Roy's crowd today in the flippin' 93rd minute!

What a week and now the ICMSA as well - it will be the Legion of Mary tomrrow!

Does anyone know where the slot currently used by A321 used by EI713/4 on LHR-ORK is going to next summer?
I'd guess thats one of the slots thats being leased to Continental together with three Dublin rotations. Alternatively they could use it to provide a token service to Shannon to quiten the critics.
If the Government block the lease to Continental (they have to agree if EI want to sell or lease any slots) things could turn out differently. They could reinstate the fifth daily service to Cork. The 5th flight for this summer was only announced in October so I wouldn't rule it out yet.

RTE's "This Week" radio programme at lunchtime on Sunday will be carrying an interview with Dermot Mannion.

(Let's also hope RTE start to bring some perspective to their coverage of this story. It's got hours of coverage all week, most of it giving the Shannon lobby an easy run and, with little else in terms of serious news, spokesmen have been allowed to go on at length with what are often dubious arguments in favour of the Government intervening, recalling the Dail etc. As so often with aviation stories in the Irish media, there has been a marked absence of informed comment or analysis that might subject some of the claims (e.g. about the likelihood of other carriers stepping in to replace EI) to greater scrutiny.)

Read on another forum that one of the reasons that Cork-LHR aircraft will overnight in LHR is that ORK cabin crew only operate in A320 sized crews. Basing a A321 would cause EI problems if it went tech and they only had a A320 to replace.

Just after watchin the RTÉ news - now the Catholic and Church of Ireland Bishops have jumped on the band wagon in a joint effort to get the route reinstated

ORK cabin crew

There is no reason why ORK based crew cannot operate the 321. They have done so in the past. The 321 overnighting in LHR operating between ORK will be crewed by ORK crew as LHR base does not have the numbers anymore. A 321 going tech will cause the same problems anywhere it is used, no different in ORK.

The bishops from around the snn area are in on the act now. The two Roman Catholic bishops and the Church of Ireland bishop have issued a joint statement calling on EI to reverse their decison to drop the snn-lhr flights. Beats me why they dont dig up De Valera and Monsignor Horan while they are at it!

Liffy1M makes a good point about the easy run the snn campaign is getting from the combined Irish media. If only the same could happen on the campaign for a debt free Cork Aiport. There has been very little sympathy for the cause from most of the national media or from the regions for that matter. There have been no mass meetings of county councils, regional development authorities, hotel groups etc. Jackie Healy Rea has stayed quiet on the subject too!

BECAUSE what A.L. did isn't right. They have found (a suspiciously obvious) loophole in the Articles of Association. It was never intended that the slots in Shannon, Cork or Dublin would be moved.

However, AL are fighting dirty so why can't the people of the Mid-West defend their interests in return ? And if they fail, then the slots being moved from Cork (and 3 from Dublin) is only around the corner.

As I said earlier, there is a reason why these slots are so valuable, you and others seem to be ignoring this.

Cessnarocket, I whole heartedly agree with you!!! But people don't tend to follow the number crunching side of the industry. EI as you have said is not government owned it has share holders.

But I'am very interested as to why the churchs' are starting to get involved. You cannot force an airline to do anything (The one and only thing I like abt the EU) . If these people were very much intwinned with the industry they would realise airlines chase profit, then pick up leisure market pax to fill the numbers and take away from competitors!!!

So, airbus-commander, IF the majority of the shareholders forced AL to change their plans, that would be ok then ?

the majority of the shareholders
I wonder is that supposed to mean FR and Bertie and maybe refer to a certain letter to Bertie & Co. penned by MOL & est.

If a majority of the shareholders succeed in forcing the management of the company to change its mind on SNN, I think you might well see the present senior management exiting the scene, the stock market value of Aer Lingus falling as a consequence and the Government - paradoxically - looking even more foolish than they do now. So they are caught between the proverbial "rock and a hard place".

MOL and Ryanair, probably for a number of reasons, has tried to get the Government to put pressure on Aer Lingus, but anyone tempted to support that approach would do well to consider what is behind this - cui bono?. O'Leary's motivation, as ever, is to benefit Ryanair and to upset Aer Lingus's plans - not to assist the beleaguered folk of Clare and Limerick. The Government needs to tread very warily on this and that, no doubt, is why there has been a relatively restrained reaction from that quarter to the Aer Lingus decision.

I'm one of those who will benefit from the new Bfs - Lhr route and I welcome it. I must say that I am reading with great amusement the reaction to the EI move. About 2 (?) years ago. Easyjet launched several routes to Eire ex Lgw when Fr had no great interest in the region. It wasn't long until Fr launched services, forced easyjet off the routes and then cut their own services. What was your reaction in the region then? Was there protests at the Fr action and calls for support for Easyjet? Shannon put Ei in a position where they couldn't expand at Snn as just about every decent route is served already by Fr. So are Ei expected to remain, see yields come under pressure against Fr to London and keep going just to please some in the area. I bet over time, the pax wouldn't be saying "let's book EI to London because they stayed with us", they would go and book Fr and leave Ei at the blink of an eyelid. Snn did a deal with Fr, who expect to pay nothing to little in fees, but Ei I bet are still paying high charges. This sort of reaction has been seen at other airports, Fr goes in and force others out. You should have seen it coming, you had the warning with the easyjet experience. A lot of people down there need to waken up to the real world. You are owed nothing. And I don't work for any airline.

Liffy 1M, and what did Ahern do to Willie Walsh, when he tried to pull a fast one with the MBO ? i.e. it isn't as if he didn't force senior management before. In anycase, Mannion and his merry men can still make plenty of money, just not as a reward for dirty tricks.

If the share price falls, the private institutions will try to sell their shares and Scumair would gladly buy them IF they were allowed. Don't forget, a Ryanair takeover has already been ruled anti-competitive.

The Government went headlong into this in their typical inept manner by not making sure AL couldn't move those slots. They can now cut the treading warily rubbish and get on to make good their monumental **** up.

True Blue, firstly, ignore the fact that it is AL, take note that the routes are to LHR. That is what is important.

Even with the higher charges, AL admitted they were making a profit on the route, and have been doing so for a long time.

What FR do is dirty as well and should be addressed, but that is a seperate issue. This is all about Fianna Fail screwing up again and blustering the stupid Irish public that it's just the way it goes.

Don't get me wrong here because I'm in no way a political animal and I'm far from a lover of Fianna Fáil but do ya really think the shinners, the blue shirts or Pat Rabbit's Red Army would do any better

Bloody politians - all the same at the end of the day. Above in Dublin sittin in the Dáil and that's all they're any good at is sittin on their big fat a$$e$. Anything any of 'em gets involved with ends up essentially screwed up

As has been said (and ignored) this is about more than Clare and Limerick. This is about the whole West of Ireland. The one good thing thats come out of this is it is probably the first time the cities of Limerick and Galway are working together to make something happen. The people of Galway (and businesses in that area ) and further up the West Coast are just as concerned as the Mid West. The reality is a large group of people are in danger of loosing their jobs over this. Regardless of what Mannion or Dempsey says. And according to the Mayor of Galway, an impact study by IBEC will show this reality. This is not about protecting Shannon. Its about AL robbing vital slots from a profit making route to the West Coast of Ireland. Aisle2c's made probably the best comment on here to date imo..

BECAUSE what A.L. did isn't right. They have found (a suspiciously obvious) loophole in the Articles of Association. It was never intended that the slots in Shannon, Cork or Dublin would be moved.

If it is true that BD are going to look into SNN/LHR then there is a good chance that they may operate it. They will probably reduce their BHD/LHR frequency to six after EI come into BFS and a slot or 2 could be found elsewhere within their network. Also they have plenty of irish experience after operating successfully LHR/DUB for I'm sure 20 years. With that volume of traffic from SNN with no competition, BD could make a go of it. Also new blood into shannon, not under the continual rant from MOL would be a good thing.
