Name

Bizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzare. What is going on.

Havnt they got better things to think about like attracting more caririers and routes/passengers.

I bet to save monet the existing letter head and signage will be used with International crossed out in red pen.

Rebrands cost money, money is scarce, the gain non existance so why do it.

IO know perhaps they have sold the name to coventry. (sic )

They are doing it 'Just because'.
I doubt the workforce will be happy with the re-branding costs in the present climate. Lets see, a pay rise and a pension or...........a re-branding?
It's OK to re-brand and pay the CEO obscene amounts but looking after your workforce is deemed not worth it..

BD & FR

Although a great pity, i'm not surprised about BD at all, timings do not allow for enough time for a full days business to/from either city, it started off well but as soon as times changed last year I could see the death knell for this service. Wonder if BE will tinker with their times or put on an extra flight?

FR forum reporting BHX-MLA to start with FR 15 Dec, yet another example of what a negative blight they are for the airport, I hope KM can compete or it will another airline gone to add to the extensive list in the previous post. I thought there was a deal with FR not to overlap on too many routes or has that now expired?

Perhaps the big fat bonus paid out to the CEO is based on airlines and routes lost rather than gained, or maybe the fact that the only route development has been to pull in an M&S. Overall, it's a pitiful situation and all the while pax are leaking away to other airports because they can't get to where they want (Europe wise at least) from BHX - oh nearly forgot, TS due back next year on YYZ using a 333 but only once a week, better than nothing though as I believe TCX are coming off the route

As regards to you'r post barry none of these bollow have pulled out in the last 5 years AA pulled in 2001, DUO went bust in may 2004 and Midland Airways left in 2002.
Flyblue never even had a plane they had just taken the crew on and then decided it wasnt going to happen so dont think that's classed as leaving.

How many of those listed went bust and don't fly from anywhere anymore as opposed to those who still operate but don't use BHX?

Why is BMI Baby on that list? I'm pretty sure I'll see a few next time I go to BHX....

Oh yeah, CSA have dropped ALL UK routes - not just BHX

The list

The reason is because as it says we have lost 6-7 a/c from a peak of 9 to the now 3. As regards going bust yes thats life and airlines come and go. Just a list of what I have seen go and I know this can be said of a lot of airports but highlighting bhx has had a lot over time and replacements have been thin on the ground to say the least. With other airports able to attract airlines in this climate and BHX seemingly left on the shelf, I just wonder what is going on???????

According to local press reports today a board meeting is planned for 28.10.10 at which approval for the go ahead with 350M extension to runway is likely to be granted.

So where´s this 350m going to be I wonder? Not worth the expense of tunnelling the Coventry road for 350m. I can only imagine that they may add a little at both ends with displaced thresholds. There might also be a need to backtrack which won´t be terribly efficient.

Runway

On the Coventry Rd end where it was always going but about 60m less than originally planned.

Most of the costs are saved by diverting the A45 rather than putting the road under the runway.

The rest can always be added later if required.

In these times a sensible solution.

OK....According to the Airport Consultative committee site..from May...
Birmingham International Airport Consultative Committee - Latest News
A ‘Cunning Plan B’ to build the runway extension at Birmingham International Airport for virtually half the published £120 million cost of the project has been drawn up, the Post reports. Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said a new phased scheme would deliver 95 percent of the original anticipated capacity at a much lower cost.
The revised runway scheme is being mooted just six months after Mr Kehoe said the business case for a £120 million runway extension was ‘marginal at best’ and could rack up big cash losses. He told the newspaper: ‘We need to find 400 metres of concrete. The scheme costs £120 million but the company is struggling to find the cash to build that.'
‘We have a cunning plan, Plan B – we can build the runway in phases and, by losing 50 to 60 metres, we can build it at half the price. We would save half the costs and, when it is up and running, we can finish the job. It would be £65 million for phase one.’
He said the new phased plan was achievable by removing 50 metres of the project earmarked for a tunnel facility as part of an ‘overrun’ area, adding: ‘The Board has to make a decision from a financial point of view – we still have to move the A45. We have planning permission for seven years and we have to exercise that permission within seven years.'

BIA/BA/BHX name

Hopefully his Holiness will leave some inspiration behind when he departs BHX tomorrow..

May I suggest as a new name, incorporating all the lost destinations into the title, Birmingham Berlin Barcelona Lisbon Madrid Rome etc etc International (oops sorry frowned upon) Airport. Maybe someone will buy a ticket to Brum thinking they are going some place else !!

What a great marketing idea, may generate some much needed income !

So question is!!! Did the pope have to pass through security? Was he penalised for not having his holy water in less than 100ml bottles in a zip lock bag?

Benedict was waived through security but on the way through Kehoe managed to take out several Papal key aides and Cardinals and replaced them with some former colleagues from Luton Airport

I thought that it was very apt to see the Pope travel around Spitfire Island at Castle Bromwich on the way to BHX . I wonder whether or not he was informed of the significance of the place, on Battle of Britain Day. The viewers watching television most certainly were not, much to my chagrin.

He mentioned the Battle of Britain in his speech at Cofton Park, notably the bombing of Coventry. You can say much about the Pope, but he's very well informed.

Not a swipe at the pope at all, I thought that his comments at Cofton were very apt and unexpected, more a swipe at the dire reporting on an area that had so much to do with the defence of the UK. There was an aerial shot of Spitfire Island as he passed with the superb statue shown. Most of you may not know, but that statue was by the same artist (Tim Tolkien, JRR's gt nephew) who made the statue of Newman that was unveiled at Cofton earlier in the day. Anyway way off topic for the BHX thread, sorry.
