March Pax/FR
NorthernCounties
The Saturday afternoon has been filled by a third Dublin but I had forgotten that there is also a Saturday evening available from 19.15.
Tuesday & Thursday early afternoon are still available as far as I am aware.
I am sure Jamie2K9 would have reported any change.
I think I said before I expected the aircraft to go to Dublin thus releasing a Dublin based aircraft for another destination. However this hasn't happened and I thought with the gap tight on two of the three days that LDY was a good bet and with March pax up I am still wondering if there is a chance.

No doubt the excuse that the school holidays started earlier last year (about three days of March) will be the spin re the indifferent figures.
I have copied the individual route figures down and as usual a mixed bag. There are some legitimate reasons for the decline, such as IT's down due to the problems in Egypt and Tunisia. Also Baby stopping EDI & GLA did not help the 2011 figures.
A couple of surprises, the bad one was the extremely poor Istanbul figure, down 20% at 2694 and Dubai at 46537 (up less than 1%), which beat Gatwick's three daily service leaving BHX third behind Manchester (down 1% in March) and Heathrow (up) in terms of pax from the UK to DXB. LGW of course have low density three-class aircraft compared to BHX's two class high-density aircraft although Gatwick was down 18%.
BHX -DXB averaged 375 pax at around 86% load factor just about 1% less than Manchester.

Shop Development
Noticed from the BHX website that the Shop Development Team have been working hard again - 'Next, Superdry, Accessorize and JD Sports will all be located within the Airport’s departure lounge, available to all outbound passengers.'
Surely a new airline annoucement must be on the cards?

Cheers Olton and Jamie2k9, hopefully now we're experiencing 70% load factors and 8% passenger growth we could see an aircraft being directed towards this route. If it did happen, my bets would be on the Thursday. I'll continue to hope until then...
Good to hear the MPL route is going from strength to strength when it's only basically started!

Wow all these new shops opening in the terminal. Primark and Poundland should do well in this climate. maybe the airport can find them a space.
On a more positive note BBC Midlands today were reporting the start of the new runway extension will be next year, with completion in 2014. lets hope Management pull their fingers out and get it sorted.

March Route Analysis
The passengers figures are from the CAA with 2010 in brackets.
These are schedule only and the average pax and load factor
have been estimated from a BHX blog and libhomeradar.
I checked some of my January's and February's figures and
was slightly disappointed with the details used from libhomeradar,
as the CAA punctuality stats showed more rotations in about 50%
of the figures. This month I have used the BHX blog for non-UK airlines
re the number of rotations and more often than not I have used the
expected rotations for the UK airlines, which for March was easy due
to the lack of bad weather or bank holidays.

TK figures are going backwards, which is a major disappointment
out of all of these. EK I think was a record for sheer numbers
although load factor last March was 91%, as quite a few three
class 77W's were used compared to none in March 2011. In fact
nearly 50% of the flights were operated by the 442 seat version.
Another good example that good load factors mean nothing, Prague
and Krakow are no more despite 77% and 85% respectively. At least
the former is back for winter but still a surprise it was not kept until
late May when there is no room in the Baby schedule for it. Hopefully
with the two base closures later this year, Prague is here to stay.

Aer Lingus/Ryanair
Jamie2k9
Lingus a few winters back were four daily every weekday. The schedule is an increase on summer 2011 but similar to last winter.
What is extra to last winter is the afternoon Cork and Shannon on a Saturday. Both operating now but did not last winter.
Ryanair
Still only Alicante with times but it looks as if KUN & FAO might stay for
winter unlike last year but MLA & LDY does not look good although the
same happened to MLA this summer but it was eventually released.
Malaga looks like only it might be only two weekly compared to three last winter but the rest is about the same but of course FUE operates whereas it only started in March this year.

Slightly Off Topic
Hey guys, I was at BHX today and the first thing I noticed was the boards which tell you where different facilities are. I realised that they were Showing 1-82 and 100-132. What Happened to 83-99? :S Secondly, The gates are messed up: The EuroHub gates are 1-20, and the international pier gates are 40-68. What happened to 21-39?
What are they doing to the (Old) terminal 2 (eurohub) part of the airport, as I see you cannot get into the terminal 2 departure lounge.
Last question: For e.g. Is a KLM 738 allowed to depart from the (old) terminal 2 Eurohub part of the airport? and are flybe allowed to depart from the international pier?
Thanks, Captain--

LDY-BHX had 133 PAX per flight in March with a 70% LF! The BHX figures are constantly improving and we were saying on the Derry thread that extra rotations could be sustained. I do think we will see it for Winter it'll just be added later than the rest?

It would be difficult to arrive a KL at the old T2 as there are still 2 arrivals halls. You need consistency where you park the aircraft so that immigration can plan accordingly and the baggage handlers know where to dump the bags etc.
As for the departure not such an issue. KL/AF check-in is in the old T2 and aircraft are parked at T1.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Boa Vista
Looks like Boa Vista is instead of Taba. Taba is no longer bookable as a package holiday and the Boa Vista flight operates at similar times on a Tuesday too. Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurgada are all still bookable.
This was to be expected as IT operators remove capacity from Egypt.

Is Boa Vista in addition to or replacing the weekly Thomson flight to Sal Cape Verde? I seem to remember someone stating that Thomson Cape Verde ops were going to move from Sal to Boa Vista

It appears as Daza as said a straight swap between Taba and Boa Vista.
However the timings of the Sal and Boa Vista flights are similar but definitely sold on the Thomson website as separate.
Boa Vista departs 09.00 Tuesday and returns 22.20 and Sal departs 09.05
and arrives back 22.05.

Arrived back into T2 Monday and never realised it was still two separate
terminals for inbound pax although I understand that will change.

Boost for Birmingham ambitions
Article in Air Cargo week...........
THE UK's Birmingham International Airport, the country's second largest gateway outside the London region, processed over 21,000 tonnes of cargo in 2010, up by 65% on 2009 figures.
According to the airport, the improvement comes on the back of "a massive increase in dedicated cargo flights.....underlining the growing importance of the airport to the regional and national manufacturing sector".
During 2010, freighters accounted for 3,121 of the flights handled at the airport, with scheduled express services operated to France, Ireland and the Netherlands, plus ad hoc services to and from points all over Europe.
Birmingham claims that its dedicated cargo apron is proving ideal for these operations, helping the airport to win freight business from around the country.
Andrew Davies, head of air service development at Birmingham airport, believes its 24-hour, all-weather capability and the presence of specialist cargo handling partner Blue City Aviation, "have proved especially useful to the automotive sector, both nationally and locally".
He noted: " Many of the consignments...need to reach their destination urgently, so we play a major part in keeping production lines open".
Mike Hollick, commercial director at Blue City Aviation, drew attention to "a very positive trend in cargo movements, indicative of the resurgence in Midlands manufacturing. "We are now aiming for further growth in this sector"
