Possibl new destinations for Aer Arann

Leeds/Bradford might also be an option. It was operated by BMI Regional and Aer Arann fo much of the last decade. Surprising that airport marketing have not put any UK Regional Airports on their visual wish list.

I'd have to agree I always thought Leeds, Southampton and Cardiff for that matter have to be definite and viable options, the latter being dropped due to the unavailability of an aircraft. I wonder would demand still materialise for a Newquay/Exeter route and possibly the other routes mentioned above?

however LGW has never performed as well as I would have expected for EI
Very good point, I don't think its a far off possibility either could definitely see Aer Lingus Regional serving Gatwick with 2 daily services. Just to add to this in the Summer of 2010 the same dilemma if you could call it that was in the air with both BHX/MAN unbookable at the time while the rest of the winter schedule had been released. That July AerArann then announced they would operate the route but something which bugs me is they cut other routes or reduced other routes to implement the new services an example, Edinburgh which was cut from 11 weekly to daily, its now 11 weekly again - the demand is there.

Who knows though with the rumours lately of a BHD move for Aer Lingus and speculation of Aer Lingus Regional creating operations at BHD also this could mean the unavailability of aircraft for expansion at Cork.

its a real shame if EIR can't expand without chopping something else to compensate. like them or loathe them they are giving BHX up to 3 daily rotations, MAN 2 daily, edinburgh up to 2 daily and it would be a pity if the frequency was cut. hopefully the new aircraft they are apparently looking at will come on stream soon.

There are 4 orders for ATRs outstanding according to Jethros, but no mention of this elsewhere. Presumably these were taken up by another operator. There have been a few aircraft entering the fleet but RE seems now to be at the stage where one new route requires another to be cut, SEN-DUB was made possible by ending IOM-LCY for example. I recall reading somewhere RE have feelers out for some more ATRs, new builds, I think, or would they consider taking tidy used examples? I imagine Kingfisher in India might be one source, I'm sure there would be others.

Quote: "After that obvious destinations are a bit thin on the ground, maybe Cardiff, perhaps Southampton/Plymouth/Exeter? I think most of these have been tried in the fairly recent past by one airline or another, some more than once. Maybe the EI/RE partnership can alter the dynamics a bit."

Regretably PLH is now closed.

It dosen't help EI have nearly the same flight times during the weekdays to LGW as FR!

Well, if Ryanair were to gain control (which I don't think for a second they will) ORK and SNN would effectively be controlled by a hypothetical FR/EI group. Only a few flights with Wizz to Eastern Europe and nothing else. What is left of the charters would be consigned to the history books. A combined FR/EI would be terrible news for Ireland as a whole, but disastrous for Cork, potentially fatal. Worse again for SNN.

At present the two airlines compete out of Cork to London, Malaga, Lanzarote, Teneriffe, Gran Canaria, Faro, Barcelona and Alicante. I've no doubt that apart from London, competition on the other routes would cease if any merger takes place. At present Shannon has nothing to lose as both airlines don't compete directly apart from London. I'd also expect that there would be considerable consolidation in Dublin and that the consumer would be much worse off. This proposal will be a disaster for Irish Aviation if it goes through. It'll drive fares up and passengers down. The overseas carriers will not bother competing as they know that most Irish people will not even be aware of their brand.

Cork Airport Marketing and Tourism Ireland have decided to promote Cork as a City break destination in the North East of England preumably help the Jet 2 service from Newcastle. It's twice weekly service is the only one by a UK carrier into Cork.

Thats precisely why it would be awful if FR was allowed to wipe its only major competitor out.

Problem with the L/AFT door, Aer Lingus engineers travelling on EI498 to fix the issue, I'd expect it'll be delayed further.
