Liverpool Airport taxi drivers angry over new dress code
08.09.11
Taxi drivers have been ordered to smarten up by Liverpool Airport bosses, concerned over visitors’ first impressions of Liverpool. Cabbies picking up at the airport must now abide by a dress code detailing what they can and cannot wear, with football shirts, vests and flip-flops all on the banned list.
The airport’s conduct code states drivers must be ‘suitably attired’ and hackney drivers should maintain high standards of personal hygiene. Angry taxi drivers described the rules, which could see them banned from the rank if not followed, as ‘a step too far’. Some have already been stopped from plying for hire for repeatedly ignoring warnings.
This is worrying. What will passengers think arriving in Liverpool and being met by a man in a suit? It could remind them of the old joke: "Q: What do you call a Liverpudlian in a suit? A: The accused."

Surely cabbies' smartened attire is not going to influence new airlines to fly to Liverpool? Maybe renaming it Cheshire Parkway might.....

This is worrying. Shell suits are not on the banned list.

I used to work at LPL airport in the 70s and then people always said it was run like a little family buisiness. I was speaking to someone who works there now and they said it is EXACTLY THE SAME now ???

SPIT, I'm not doubting your 'contact' but I would be amazed if anyone who is working at the airport now was in a position to compare it to the airport of the 1970's.

Constantflyer, Blueplatinum, as they say, the old ones are the old ones - not funny then and not funny now. Can we try and steer clear of the cheap stereotypical jibes please it only leads to unnecessary aggro...?

First impression for the taxi customers is their contact with the 'queue supervisor/bouncer' who aggressively prevents anyone trying to share a cab anywhere from the airport rank. This must be illegal.

Oh dear dwlpl!

1. If by 'dont' you mean 'don't or do not'

2. If by 'your' you mean 'you're or you are' and finally

3. If by 'getting at' you mean 'to what am I alluding' , then I may be able to decipher your last message.

When individual passengers arrive at the taxi rank at LPL, they are aggressively discouraged from sharing cabs by a 'queue supervisor/bouncer/doorman' who is fairly obviously involved in creating as much business for the taxis as possible.
Sharing cabs is not illegal, but he states that it is 'not allowed'

This is surely an illegal practice.

I never complained.
I was never taking a taxi.
I was only ever walking past on my way to the staff car park.

The point was that the Airport were insisting on a dress code for the taxi drivers. I was trying to point out that the policy on the rank has serious shortcomings.

The airport can insist, as a condition of the taxi coming onto their property, on a dress code.

The hire of taxis is governed by the local council, so next time you walk past and this happens, tell the passenger to contact Liverpool City Council on 0151 233 3015 and tell them whats going on.

Hardly likely to happen now.

I am in Mumbai in India to escape both the RYR arrangements for pilots and the state of the nation in Uk and especially LPL, Speke conurbation.

Thanks for the information though dwlpl, keep safe.

one post only

Bit of a chip on your shoulder there at all?!?!?!?!
Not at all - and the fact that yours was the only other post on the subject seems to prove the point.

I thought it might stimulate some constructive discussion on why the routes were pulled and what might be done to get someone else to operate. But alas no.

And now onto taxis.

I agree entirely that taxi drivers should be well presented whatever airport they serve. For the first time visitor they are likely to be one of the first locals they meet and talk to - and first impressions count. (The same applies to the airport facilities which should be clean and comfortable).

Someone once described black cab drivers as licensed bandits. Whilst I have met some good uns, I had a fantastic trip away trip ruined by a rude and aggressive taxi driver (at a big airport not a million miles away from LPL) on my return home.

Anything that makes the service better, be it by the Airport or the Licensing Authority should be applauded. But of course neither know of many incidents etc unless they are reported. I reported the incident above to the Licensing Authority and the driver's licence to trade at the airport was withdrawn.

So it shouldn't do any harm, silverhawk, to let them know what is going on, even if you are out of it now.

Paully I agree about Liverpool Airport, a much improved airport, I last travelled through in May this year and the new security area is much better and efficent, staff were friendly and joking with us. I hear that the gate areas are to have a make over during the quieter winter months, that carpet needs replacing with tiled flooring, it's a horrible colour and been down since capital of culture which was 2006?. On my return to Liverpool in May we queued for 20 mins along with another EZY flight behind us going into the rain outside and the baggage reclaim area is too small, so improvements are still to be made which I'm sure will come.
RANT OVER.

However, I disagree when you say "God forbid Manchester, since their improvements (2007 onwards?) I have never found any aspect of MAN a problem, ok a bit of waiting timr for luggage sometimes but that's about it.

I'm a MAN fan and I think there are too many LPL fans who constantly have a cheap dig at the bigger airport situated 35 miles or so down the M62. That said, I think that article is complete rubbish. LPL isn't that bad at all. Sure, the queue for immigration can be a nightmare at certain points of the day but other than that I have never had a problem at John Lennon. My partner's "non aviation nut" complaint is that it doesn't have the airport buzz that MAN does.

Don't take much notice of paully's comments about Manchester, he/she has a history of negative comments and from memory, based on one single visit.

I don't know what the fuss is about, Liverpool is just a good honest airport, nothing fancy but certainly not anything to complain about.

That article is deliberately inflammatory and negative in my view. He has a point about the UK Border hall though. If you look at the photo of the check-in hall it is ancient. They have added an extension and entrance to Departures there since that was taken.

I only used to fly from Liverpool (being in North Manchester) because it was often a quicker experience in the airport - before take-off and after landing - but that doesn't seem the same anymore - I'm not MAN basher or LPL basher - but I just don't see the same issues at MAN that once made me travel LPL. If anything, it's slowed down a bit at LPL based on the last time I flied from there which was with KL about a month ago.
