Looks like as if LCY is slowly becoming the new upmarket gateway for leisure travel from LCY - Ibiza, Palma, Deauville, Brive, Nice. Sort of a lager lout free STN/LGW Too bad that while those leisure destinations are being added, the number of business destinations is shrinking. Let's hope that NextJet and Cimber Air will be able to maintain the links to ARN and CPH and other independent airlines will introduce flights to destinations lost like DUS or VIE.

Indeed. Some late departures only to accomodate the 1800z airspace restriction. Basically only EDI,GLA,ZRH and AMS departures. The JFK A318, BA003, has been delayed by 3 hours and will now leave at 1800z. But hey, better late than cancelled.

Lets hope things go back to normal for a long time, asap.

I hope you are right, but according to the News at 10, more ash is coming over and the CAA & NATS cannot agree on a 'safe' level.

Great timing!!!

LCY-PLH axed:

BBC News - London City air route from Devon and Cornwall scrapped

I am wondering if LCY with its contuined expansion of capacity needs to re-think its pricing. Apparently only 15 or so high-frequency, high-yielding routes have formed the core business for LCY over the past decade, with other destinations coming and going on a regular basis but without lasting success. Such marginal routes might have lasted longer if the costs of operating into LCY were lower - it looks as if airlines, because of the high costs, axe new routes rather quickly if they do not work instantly. With more movements and runway capacity available, LCY must have an interest to grow with additional routes - particularly as the core business, i.e. routes to places like Paris, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Frankfurt is increasingly coming under pressure from the high-speed trains and is likely to generate less rather than more pax in the future.

I do hope the new owners have not become too enamoured with their beancounters' perspective of life, that they think they can hike up fees substantially to pay off some of that far-too-much amount they paid for the airport. If the landing fees have gone up in the same proportion as the car park charges then they will completely price themselves out of the business.

Dermot Desmond's team had a very good understanding of how to build the asset value of LCY, how to nurture new routes, and how to encourage new business; they turned what was a financial basketcase in Mowlem's days into a significant airport for London. The new, remote, grey-suited team, whose sole focus seems to be Return on Investment for this year, seem to have forgotten it all about building the long term value of something - if they ever knew it in the first place.

Looks as if Sun Air has applied for slots at DUS for a LCY service. Not sure how serious the plans are.

It will be interesting to see if Sun-Air start LCY-DUS route. Does anyone know if they have applied for 1, 2 or 3 x Daily.

Sun-Air already successfully operate a 2 x Daily DUS - BLL service.

BACF extend IBZ and PMI

Article taken from BA News online.

Routes extended for island hotspots
British Airways' new London City flights to the Balearic Islands have proved so popular with customers that the routes are to be extended this autumn.

The summer-only flights, launched in May, were due to end in September, but will now be extended for a further five weeks. The Friday and Sunday flights to Mallorca and Ibiza, on brand new Embraer 190 aircraft, will continue until October 31, enabling a long weekend or longer breaks. The extension also means flights will operate until the end of the school half-term holidays.

Luke Hayhoe, commercial manager for BA CityFlyer, said: "These leisure routes have really taken off from London City, they proved so popular that we have already increased frequency to Mallorca to five flights a week and to Ibiza to four flights a week in July and August.
"Now we have the opportunity to extend the season and customers can enjoy some late sun with the excellent autumn climate that the Balearic Islands can offer."

The flight will operate 2 x weekly from 17th September to 31st October:

London City to Palma

BA8483 LCY 07:10 PMI 10:25 --- Friday Only ---
BA8483 LCY 13:00 PMI 16:15 --- Sunday Only ---

BA8484 PMI 11:10 LCY 12:25 --- Friday Only ---
BA8484 PMI 17:00 LCY 18:15 --- Sunday Only ---

London City to Ibiza

BA8461 LCY 07:00 IBZ 10:15 --- Friday Only ---
BA8461 LCY 12:55 IBZ 16:10 --- Sunday Only ---

BA8462 IBZ 11:00 LCY 12:25 --- Friday Only ---

BA8462 IBZ 16:55 LCY 18:10 --- Sunday Only ---

Flights will be operated by a 98 seater E190SR.

Thames Radar question....

Can anyone from Thames Radar explain why traffic arriving at LCY in busy periods always have to do 190kts and get extended vectoring?

190kts is often close to RJ 100s min clean speed and often slower than the Embraer 170/190 min clean speed. If the aircraft has thirty plus track miles to go in icing conditions staying clean is prefered.

To keep seperation why don't all arriving aircraft fly at the fastest planes min clean speed rather than the other way round?

Would it not also make more sense to put aircraft in a hold for LCY and provide an EAT. This would give radar less work and make fuel planning easier.

Thames also seem to prefer standard speeds on departsure. Is there no advantage at quiet times to clearing the sector of airspace more quickly by flying faster?

Finally, on all SIDs other than the BPK when on runway 09 what's with the left turn at one mile? Noise? Any chance of turning right direct DET?

What is wrong with min clean. If it were gusty, just add 5 kts for cash.
30 track miles with one stage of flaps isn't going to burn too much anyway - maybe 1 kg per min extra to base leg (5-7 kgs).

They do a good job of not holding us. What might help is being given a time to be at BPK or LAM by. We could then plan ourselves , but then most would get it wrong and then its back to vectors. It is more the distance to the aircraft infront though.

Don't forget the departures from LCY have to be sequenced too with back-tracks, thus the gaps needed.

Standard speeds stop you from going wide on the turn and shaking the hell out of the pax. Plenty of aircraft under you too to present an RA at anytime (slower = more time to react. Also you may catch up a slower aircraft on the same SID. Slow down cowboy - you may save 3 seconds if you are lucky and burn loads of fuel. I was under the impression you were trying to save fuel !!!

It's not all about you !!!!
(not at Thames by the way)

Nothing is wrong with min clean, but being asked to fly 190 everytime is frequently below min clean. Not a fuel problem flying around with one stage of flap but if in icing conditions for a long period it's not ideal with the leading edge slats.

I simply think it would make more sense for Thames' favourite speed to be approx 210kts. I think every aeroplane type frequently using City could manage that, even the little Fokkers; all be it only just.

I thought is was close to min clean. Standard is 220 at LAM or within 25 miles, but not many do it as it isn't in the STAR plate. If they all did, maybe all would work out for everyone.
The Fockers are very slow - getting in our way too, only needing a few miles to slow from 265.

And as you say, a high nose in icing conditions is not good form. In that case, maybe ask for a higher speed and more track miles if the slats aren't heated.

Parking the ERJ-190

Came across a BA ERJ-190 parked on "Stand 8 on the Blue Line" on the way home last night, which seems to suggest they can park the larger machine at the international gates now, except it seemed to have blocked off anyone parking on Stand 7. Is this just a trial run? Going forward, it's less than ideal to have to bus all the arriving passengers on the flagship aircraft to arrivals but that's the joy of trying to get a pint into a half pint glass.

Blue stands are part of a three phased expansion program to facilitate the larger aircraft at LCY. Three Blue stands are marked up over 7,8,9 and 10 and are called 8A, 9B, 10B. These can be used by any aircraft but allow the E190 to be parked on them. If a aircraft is using stand 7 then 8B is not available for use. If long term parking of a E190 is needed it will be placed on 10B. Stand 9 can then be used with reduced width if pushed back with a tug and 8 and 7 are available as normal with non E190.

I hope this makes sense. Airfield ops has a nice diagram if you need more info.

Mmm, doesnt seem great. Of course the profits will never be known. I would have thought loads would have been higher with people avoiding strikes at LHR. You would think loads would need to be higher especially if they are considering increasing frequencies and destinations ex LCY.
Suppose its just a one month snap shot.

Don't forget the ash cloud shutdown only finished at the end of April. Once the repatriations were over there was a considerable knock-on effect and downturn especially on long haul, people gave up booking during April.
