BOURNEMOUTH - 2
I agree with pug that responding probably only encourages teleparty to offer us more of the same drivel, but I must take him upon his last post concerning SEN.
Is he actually involved with the people currently marketing SEN or with the airports/airlines who are keen to serve SEN on completion of its redevelopment programme? Obviously not from his comment.
All I can say about it at present is "watch this space!"
As he would say - I rest my case.

well, pit it all together.teleparty supports southampton airport rather than bournemouth and, as some you believe, has an affiliation with southend airport. It has been said in numerous articles that southend airport are basing their regional airport attempt on southampton. therefore wat he said about norwich as well makes it seem that Bournemouth and Norwich are unnecessary and superflous to Southampton and Southend respectively

You guys obviously havn't read the post properly. I can only ascertain that I have hit the nail on the head.
Norwich needs a few air routes, oil related.
I am aware Southend is copying Southampton but the main point, as with most these airports is their location. Have you seen where Southend is? Who on earth is going to fly there? There is a big estuary to the south, a sea to the east, London and 4 bigger airports to to the west and everyone north will surely choose London. It would be convenient for the locals, same with Bournemouth but its not enough to sustain a substantial base.

for once, i can actually agree with you teleparty!i`m from the southend area and family i know prefer gatwick or heathrow and to an extent stansted. But southend is not attractive enough to airlines and even handlers alike because of its size. if it was marketed as London's regional airport, which it is, then theres maybe a small chance some european regionals could operate into it. theres nothin really at southend that could appeal to tourists or even bussiness folk alike, except a delayed train station that was supposed to open in spring 2010.
Bournemouth appeals to bussiness people though. for example, JP Morgan and Barclays have huge bases in bournemouth and would benefit greatly by local domestic and international services. It could use a regional that does the basic services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and possibly Madrid. Southampton can only increase by so much until runway capacity and terminal capacity exceeds the intended 6mppa target.while its likely that southampton will still accept the spillage from the bournemouth catchement, Bournemouth could reclaim some of it the marketing department will stop pleading themselves on the fact they have one constant hub route (Manchester), and wake up to the fact that more can be done and that they can take advantage of the oppertunities that they have.
I tell you what-if in the next 10 years they don't have any basic hub links and some regional continetal europe routes, I will do it myself

I simply cannot see SOU ever achieving 6 mppa.
Just where would that level of traffic come from? Its natural catchment simply isn't that large and Hampshire only has limited appeal to the inbound market. They would have to offer some fairly spectacular destinations in order to attract pax from further afield and their runway is likely to preclude that. The only time I flew from SOU was when going on holiday to Alderney and I drove down from Norwich, so that is one such route but I cannot think of many others.
At least BOH has greater potential for growth as it has few constraints on aircraft size and route distances, but again it's growth is going to be constrained by the size of its catchment and inbound traffic is unlikely to be significant.
I appreciate that SEN is slighly off topic here, but as teleparty and RooCat have offered their opinions I would say that South-East Essex has at least as many large employers of does the Bournemouth area, with RBS on the airfield boundary and KeyMed a mile away being just too examples plus the Basildon industrial/commercial centres and World Port being built a few miles down the road.
The real point though is that SEN has London on its doorstep and inbound traffic will play a large role in its growth while the direct rail link will also be drawing in outbound traffic from East London. Add to that the 600,000 local population for whom SEN is 20 minutes travel time closer than any other London airport and its potential becomes more apparent.
But time now perhaps to leave SEN out of the debate and get back to BOH matters.

I agree, the 6mppa number would only be achieved if the runway at SOU was 2,500m and there was no BOH 30 miles down the road.
3mppa forecast at BOH is more achievable given the above arguments and the 2mppa forecast at SEN is even more achievable given the large core population that will surely seek to fly from there.
PS i hear teleparty has been banned for disrespectful comments on other threads. Yippeeeeeee

Having not travelled out of Bournemouth for a few years, I was impressed with the new terminal on the way out but it would appear they still cannot cope with more than one arrival at a time. I spent 10-15mins waiting with a hundred or so other happy ryr punters having to wait whilst another aircraft disembarked its passengers first, come on BOH nice term but get the infrastructure sorted!!

Had much the same experiance myself a few weeks back. All very well having a new terminal but if they cant handle more than one plane then its going to stay empty.

glimmer of hope
it is rather embarrassing that the airport didnt do all this work at the same time so that the efficiency of the terminal capacity could be realised sooner.
anyway a glimmer of hope. the construction of the arrivals building is now taking place and also traffic lights are being installed at the airport junction. there are also rumours that easyJet will be coming in with a based aircraft during the early winter months in addition to their regular 8 weekly GVA service.

Just a thought, It's mentioned in the Easyjet thread that they are closing their base at Doncaster from 4th January so maybe the aircraft will be moved down to BOH for this rumoured base. Fingers crossed

Looks like Doncaster is going through the same turmoil as Bournemouth is at the moment
Would be fantastic if Easy Jet gave Bournemouth a chance with the operation of even a small winter programme to Tenerife , Malaga , Alicante , Edinburgh etc but if they were operating out of Doncaster with 90 % loads and pulled out what s the possibility that the same could happen here as loads with Ryanair during the winter months last year were about 120 pax in the lean months
Its a real big blip on the radar from November with some Saturdays having zero flights and only the Flybe service on others
Fingers crossed !!

I dont see why EZY would try a small base from BOH, perhaps some more expansion like the way GVA is operated could be possible though?

Why RIP BOH?
I have been a reader of these forums for a long time and never thought to register. Well know I have. My question to you is why RIP BOH? If I was given the choice of flying from any UK regional it would be BOH.
They have the ability to handle any type of aircraft. I believe recenntly there was a Corsair 747-400 doing a military charter. How many of those (747-400) do you see at the other airports close to BOH? SOU? Now thats a laugh. cant handle much bigger than a 757 as I'm led to believe. BOH has loads of potential that hasn't been realized yet.
As for the likes of FR having a recess over the winter period. Well, I think I would blame that on the downturn. The same also as Palmair. Wasn't that voted the worlds best small airline or something like that? How many of those has SOU got?
I just hope that the ''Ruperts'' at BOH can attract something over these months. I also have a theory that BOH could have a regular TATL route probably once or twice a week seeing as Continental pulled out of BRS. I think there must PAX from the Southwest that would use it.

BOH will improve again over time, FR will return, TOM remain and I guess there may be a few gaps to fill due to the lack of Palmair etc. Of course with no new runways in London BOH should benefit from this! I doubt any longhaul though.

To be honest i'm surprised that BOH hasn't got any long haul routes. Even if only seasonal. I know they have the cruise charters. But I mean. BOH has a large influx of ESL/EFL students throughout the year coming from all over the world. If I had that kind of capital to spend I would certainly try a few trial flights to places in Latin America, places in Asia and the EU.
But I'm confident thAt 2011 will be a good year for BOH.

Doubt seriously long haul schedule will ever come to BOH, even when economy is booming again.
There are Caribbean charters in the winter and someone may take the plunge with Florida in the future, but schedule...that is fantasy land!
