Rumour of EZY base
Heard a rumour close to the airline that they are considering June or July for 2 A319's based. Routes touted: EDI, GLA, BFS, AMS, NCE, FCO, MAD, PMI, AGP, BER, CDG. (plus GVA that operates each winter)
Having just closed EMA and knowing how the company feels about the inflexibility of small bases I'd be surprised.
If they did anything I would suspect it will be W patterns or routes from places where they have a base. I also can't imagine that they'll look at the Scottish routes as they'd struggle to fill anywhere near 150 seats.
I'd love the rumour to be true, but would bet that it's not.

Air Southwest only have 6 aircraft and to base at Bournemouth would take some aircraft investment or re-appraisal of their routes.
Maybe a W, PLH-MAN-BOH-MAN-PLH but that would sacrifice their twice daily Manchester route. Since they own Plymouth Airport, I can't see that happening unless the route was a lot more profitable than their current schedule on that route.
That's my 2p.

Bournemouth January 18th 2010
Bournemouth Airport have accepted a few Southampton Flybe diversions tonight although they will be refusing any further more.
Staff are talking about a Scandinavian flight using turbo prop aircraft.
Stored at Bournemouth is a Ex Singapore Jumbo. On european ramps are many white 737s and a 757 which is based not stored.

Runway Catiii But No Diverts Accepted
Bullet points for ease of understanding:
1) Airport management @ BOH & MAN invested millions in upgrading the runway to CATIII status
2) Meaning BOH has the same runway 'all weather capability' as LHR
3) Meaning BOH will be requested more than usual for landing diversions in poor weather at other airports in the vicinity
4) Servisair cannot be expected to staff up for unexpected diversions. But because diversions pay FULL LANDING AND FULL PASSENGER FEES, BOH airport should be looking at ways to handle diversions by a 'BOH based diversion or emergency team'. BOH handling used to do this in the past.
5) Soon airline pilots will be avoiding listing BOH as their preferred diversion runway as most times they will be rejected (by Servisair)
6) RESULT if this continues: INVESTMENT IN RUNWAY provides no returns

I think you may find that the runway at BOH was upgraded to satisfy Ryanairs demands in preparation for the 5 base a/c they were planning.
If the proposed number of a/c had turned up, maybe that would have recovered some of the outlay, but certainly not from Ryanair themselves.
It certailny wasn't upgraded to accommodate large numbers of diversions.
Looking at the BOH website you can see the number of flights per day, which is dismal, Servisair and other companies will have cut staff to the bare minimum, so there is no capability to handle diversions.
If you want staff available for call out you would need to pay them or rely on goodwill, I doubt any handling agent could afford to pay and I will leave the goodwill to your imagination.
Once the Development is complete and there is a decent number of base aircraft supported by an increase in non base traffic, there should be enough staff to handle diversions - maybe !
The fact that BOH has stayed open when all others have closed due to weather, should give the Airlines something to think about especially now the upgrade has been done.
MAG have put their b******s on the chopping board with the Development and Upgrade to CATIII let's hope it pays off.

I don't no where you get your information from, but lets put the record straight. Servisair have no say in what diversions come to this airport. That decision is made by the airport operations director, who unless forced will not accept more than 4 diversion at any one time. Don't kick the handling agent at BOH they do a fantastic job.

Also, they haven't added the extra rotations to the existing routes that they announced before Christmas. I'm guessing they're still sorting out the schedules but I don't see why they can't get it loaded. Winters nearly over and the second plane will be here within 9 weeks or so.

Ryanair have loaded the latest summer schedules into there bookings base including the extra services that were previously announced but it could still all change !
Dublin and Gerona flights have been reduced and are now operated by a Bournemouth based aircraft
I think this is the proposed flying plan at the moment with the 2 based aircraft for those that are interested , at the moment it looks a full schedule except on Sunday were there is room for 1 Cascaonne service ?

Will there be any other Ryanair routes served by non based a/c ?
Seems like there will be some doors opening for operators with smaller aircraft, for the domestic routes, or has SOU got that sewn up ?
Maybe it will always be Bucket & Spade at BOH !

Other opportunities
I'm surprised at Ryanair's consolidation style approach at BOH. Despite the extra based a/c they have cut actual capacity by reducing the 'w' pattern flying. Maybe this is more efficient. But i dont see how a 4 times weekly DUB can compete effectively enough with a Flybe 3 daily from SOU up the road.
There certainly seems opportunities in abundance from BOH by other operators. Jet2 tried BFS once, why couldnt they have tried thicker more profitable routes? Air Berlin tried PAD once, why couldnt they have tried thicker more profitable routes? Bmibaby have announced JER, why havent they explored thicker more profitable routes? It seems like the same story always repeating itself at BOH. I'm getting tired of supporting the airport.
Badly needs an easyJet base to boost things.

So what happens my FR flights booked on a saturday and paid for!!??
They didn't even bother to tell me that the return flight at 7pm on the Friday now departed at lunchtime! I am now flying BA from LHR.
I've also travelled several times from BOH to Scotland with Ryanair so by abandoning both the PIK and EDI routes they've also lost my custom to SOU and Flybe. Another customer lost by Ryanair and by my local airport that I would love to support. Come on EasyJet or Air Southwest or Jet2 BOH needs you!
