No Madrid-Bournemouth was axed so they could launch new routes from Madrid. The news only appeared on the Spanish Ryanair site and not the English one.

Re Easy and their Krakow flights. I think I am correct in thinking that Krakow is not an actual base for them. So they may be looking to service the route in a W from one of the existing bases as they do at the moment. You never know, Easy could be opening a base at BOH in time for next summer, maybe thats why TOM have pulled off so many services for next summer.

Does anyone know when TOM will release their finalised summer schedule? I ask because at the moment they still need 2 based aircraft with upto 5 flights a day.

This and that

Have been following the thread with interest. Firstly FR almost always use new routes to justify culling - see the new routes releases under news on their web site.. it makes for better publicity.

Ryanair grows at 20%+ a year and return a mega profit. There are not enough runway slots to achieve that level of growth at LGW/STN/LTN so most UK growth for FR will continue to be in the regions. So don't be too despondent about culled routes. FR will still grow at BOH if the routes are profitable.

The runway slot shortage is probably why FR bought BUZZ (runway slots at STN) and EZY bought GB (slots at LGW).

It also is reasonable to bet that the FR pax figures through BOH in 2008 will be 20% or so up on 2007 and EZY figures similarly 15% up. Some old routes will be back and new ones will emerge. Key as always will be profitability of the BOH routes vs what else the airline can do with the capacity. Am sure that FR will be looking at everything TOM is doing throughout the UK to pick off the juicy opportunities while TOM tries to figure out what kind of airline (LCC or Charter) the newly merged entities - 4 airlines into one -want to be.

Also sure that EZY will be doing the same as FR. EZY grow at 15% each year.. their figures at BOH have followed that trend and more. KRK is still earning it's stripes, was only announced mid july and has been operating for only a few weeks.

I personally saw the easy move on KRK/BOH as an indication that they have either BOH or KRK base in mind.. and wanted to make life harder for Wizz and occupy the route before FR could make a move. Their risk is a six month schedule so far.

The EZY KRK/BOH route is operated by a Dortmund based aircraft by the way. I used it last week. It serves a Dortmund rotation either side of the BOH.

Pax demographics on EZY and Wizz are interesting from BOH to Poland from what I xsaw last week. Wizz almost entirely Polish nationals and very full 90%, but EZY mostly Brits and less full - 75%ish, with a smaller aircraft an A319 vs A320.

Finally, if you are interested in understanding airline strategy and plans, you could do worse that look at the invetsor relations pages on the airlines web site (for Publicly listed airlines at least)

The CEO report to shareholders - normally a pdf file of a powerpoint presentation - reveals a great deal about aircraft and route plans..

Well worth a read.

excellent review flitefone

i'm glad someone is keeping positive despite some minor set backs - to be honest I think the Thomsonfly pull back is more to do with the emergency they had at Bournemouth and the suspension of two pilots... article in flight international about the almost near disaster in stalling the aircraft on final approach.
Bournemouth has one of the safest runways in the UK, on approach, so it must be pretty serious for the aircraft to have got into that state (aircraft system or pilot error will be revealed when the AAIB release findings.) apparently the crew were able to save the aircraft after switching from auto to manual control.
anyway... cant see easyJet or Ryanair missing the opportunity that the Thomosonfly withdrawl will have - some routes like Prague and Alicante attract large numbers of passengers at good yields - yields that easy and Ryanair can make work but Tfly probably cant. I have no doubt that 2008 will be very busy.

Thanks but am sure it's not about safety but simple economics. TOM has yet to figure out how to be a LCC and I suspect currently has horrible numbers. A very simple metric (yes I know it is not wholly true indicator) is to take the number of airline staff in the TOM groups' airlines and divide the staff number into the number of pax in a year. You then get a ratio of staff to pax

Then do the same with the competition.. you will see very quickly that there is a big difference in numbers and hence cost compared to FR/EZY etc. Staff = cost.

As for Incidents these of course are always very unfortunate, and this one is I think still under investigation. But incidents of this nature at least will not drive route decisions.

It usually economics or politics..

I was under the impression FR bought BUZZ for the route authority to Prague as the Czech Republic was not in the EU at the time.

Hi Groundloop

I don't believe FR have ever served Prague other than from DUB.
Eitherway you would not buy an airline for one route I imagine. Best way to check is to read what MOL said to shareholders about the purchase of Buzz at the time.. I do know that runway capacity at STN is an issue for them, thats also one reason why FR have stepped into Luton too.. more runway capacity from London

Anyone know what plane was used for the P&O Cruise ship flight to Bridgetown this afternoon (767?) and why it was 5 hours late departing BOH?

I know someone going on the 11th Jan departure (no its not me) and they are curious.

Cheers

Yes it was a 767-300 with premium seating.

I'm not sure what went wrong with the a/c getting to BOH as their three 767's landed back on time-ish today from Punta Cana,Cancun and Montego Bay. It was the PUJ-LGW due to go on to BOH.

The a/c will do the same for their flight. 10/01/08 PUJ-LGW then on the 11th= LGW-(empty ferry sector)BOH-BGI so I suggest to your friend they look at the arrivals and departures the day before to make sure the Thomson Punta Cana takes off on time, this will give them a clearer indication as to whether their flight will take off on time
its TOM 6511- Outbound 10/01/08 LGW-PUJ
TOM 6512- Inbound 10/01/08 PUJ-LGW landing 11/01/08 0620

This isn't always a guarantee and on the day they could say use the Birmingham a/c and delay say the East Midlands passengers depending on a number of reasons, but using this should give them the best clue on any delays.

Hope they have a nice holiday.

NPA attempts to block Airport expansion

From todays Bournemouth Echo

AIRPORT and council chiefs have come out all guns blazing after the New Forest National Park Authority attempted to halt major plans for the expansion of Bournemouth Airport.

National Park bosses have applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the decision by Christchurch council to grant permission for the scheme.

If the judge allows the review to proceed it could lead to planning permission for the new airport terminal, extra car parks and highway improvements being quashed and the council forced to reconsider the application.

But whatever the outcome, the High Court procedure will come at a high cost to the public purse both to the government-funded national park quango and council tax payers in Christchurch.

Town hall officers have slammed the NPA tactics as misguided, unlikely to succeed and a huge waste of public money.

Now council leader Cllr Alan Griffiths is calling for an urgent meeting with the National Park Authority's board to "put a stop to this appalling waste of public money".

"We are at a loss to understand why the national park would want to take this step.

"We have already had discussions with them and will continue to do so until we understand exactly what they hope to achieve, as it is still not clear to us," he said.

"If, as they say, this is merely a matter of principle, applying for a judicial review could be at vast expense to the taxpayer with little hope of it affecting the planning decision in any way.

"For an unelected body to take legal action against an elected body is a waste of time and money for all involved."

Christchurch MP Chris Chope said: "I am very concerned that resources will be drawn from the community to fund litigation at a time when people would really prefer these resources to be otherwise employed for their benefit.

"Litigation is merely designed to go over process rather than substance and would be a total waste of public resources."

The NPA case, already dismissed by government ministers who did not "call in" the planning consent for a public inquiry, is that Christchurch council did not take proper account of the national park when approving the airport plans.

New Forest NPA chairman Clive Chatters said: "The authority feels this is both a significant individual case and an important point of principle."

"Government designated the New Forest as a national park and one of its particular characteristics is vulnerability to the impact of development within and beyond its boundaries."

But Christchurch council insists it was aware of its legal duties and the airport planning application included a full environmental statement both in general terms and the effects on the national park.

Bournemouth Airport head of external affairs Sally Windsor said: "We deeply regret that the New Forest National Park Authority has decided to take this action, particularly as we were already in discussion with them about their concerns and we have offered to meet them again to allay any other fears they may have."

Yep, I was thinking pretty much the same although I suppose there is some hope of BOH-LPL and/or BOH-MAN routes being launched?

Still amazed FR haven't stepped in with an increased service to ALC for Summer 2008 onwards or U2 anouncing a route to PRG to compensate the loss of the TFly routes, both of which did great numbers.

BOU PAX

BOH/LPL is a non starter, Flybe tried SOU/LPL and gave up due to load factors. BOH/MAN may have a chance, but cannot think of a low cost carrier who is going to try to compete with Flybe out of SOU.

Re Tribekey

Take a look at the Ryanair and easyjet forums both are to make large bases announced on the same day. Some flights from Manchester include Man-Bristol and Man-Stansted. We still have hope of a MAN to BOH route.

Ryanair AND easyJet based at BOH!?!

apparently BOH is being rumoured as next base for Ryanair AND easyJet (I have heard rumours related to EZY but not FR) If this is the case BOH could be handling dramatic rise in pax in 2008... watch this space I guess?
