87.5% is a brilliant figure for Shannon- Pity they wont keep it on even for the summer. I've seen the flight go out once or twice and it always looks packed!

Hi

Not been through BOH for a few weeks as working in the UK , can anyone tell me what building works have either started or are scheduled for phase one of the new terminal buildings over the winter period?

Still lots of chatter in various forums with regards to BOH being bases for both FR and EZY in the future, with the master plan showing 10 stands to be in use instead of the current 4 (6 to be along the new terminal front, 4 the other side of the stands by the cargo area) this would certainly allow the space for more overnight plane parking if this was to happen.

Interesting times ahead hopefully

From what i understand the area around the Arrivals building is being cleared and dug up , the existing arrivals buildings are proposed to be retained as the domestic arrival area and will be screened by a 3 metre high screen that spans between the new departure extension and the new international arrivals building. The design is in a barrel roofed modular form which is flexible and can be repeated to extend and eventually replace the existing temporary buildings of the domestic arrivals building , which we have loved to hate for so many years now ( dating back to the 1940 s i believe ! )
The building is made up of aluminium and glass and the roof form is proposed to be intersected with bands of glazing that will act as a rooflights to allow natural light into the new terminal buildings.
The departures and new international arrivals building will have a new prominent entrance point with a canopy . A scetch of this is on the airport web site at the moment
The proposed departure extension wraps around the existing building and will provide additional facilities such as enlarged security area , offices , shops , catering and extended concourse and departure lounge .
The area between the arrivals and departure section will be a piazza that will be landscaped and provide an area for those waiting for taxis and buses
Exciting times finally happening at Bournemouth and it should be a new terminal we can all be proud of , we have waited long enough for it !

Ryanair base?

just flicking through the local free paper and spotted an ad for Ryanair flights from BOH.

No news on FR's website or destination map.

Has the local rag cocked up and run the ad a week early?!

anyway new routes advertised are:

Belfast
Budapest
Cork
Friedrichshafen
Fuerteventura
Grenoble
Krakow
Salzburg
Stockhom
Tenerife
Venice

most commencing 30/31 Oct

Madrid and Milan exaisting routes are also listed but not PIK, Girona, Dublin etc

what's going on??!!

Could possibly be a marketting error? If flights are starting on 30/31 October then this gives Ryanair surely too little time to gain any decent revenue on the first 2 months of flights.

Could have been that an advert for the Dublin or Liverpool press accidentally found its way down to Bournemouth? Then again, who knows...?

And where would Ryanair be finding the a/c, at EMA we was meant to be getting two a/c but now its only one, so im almost sure BOH is not going to happen just yet

think you're probably right SeamusCVT, had a quick glance at the new routes from Liverpool and they do seem to match those in the ad in the Bournemouth paper so does look like a marketing error

shame!

BOH could be linked to the town by a tram system that will also cover most of S.E. Dorset, the council will be voting on it soon. There is an article on the Bournemouth Echo website. This is definately what the airport needs.
Rumours on another forum say that the next 3 FR bases will be EDI, RIX and BOH. So lets see if it comes true.

FR have started loading their summer 08 schedule, so far for BOH are

Dublin 9 x weekly
Prestwick daily
Pisa and Alicante 3 X weekly

I very much doubt Bournemouth will be becoming an FR base any time soon. Winter loads are always terrible on any routes bar Dublin. While summer loads are usually very good, BOH won't be made a base until loads during the winter months improve.

en2r - u got ur facts?

Terrible loads in the winter?! Bournemouth has some of the flatest seasonal fluctuations of any airport in the UK. It's monthly pax are around 75,000 in the winter and around 100,000 per month in the summer (growing at 12-20% year on year); or about 1.2m total this financial year. Yields are strong in BOH - the wealth in the area is above average - annual income and property prices can back that up. That would explain why there are 6 low cost airlines at BOH and all the big holiday companies. Yet at airports like Norwich, Exeter, Blackpool, Teesside/Durham Tees, Humberside, Coventry and Newquay (all comparable to BOH) there are only one or two 'big' low cost airlines. Plus you check out the seasonality levels at those airports - it's shocking. Bournemouth has a 'pull' in the summer and people in the locality like to escape in the winter - it's like the perfect destination for year-round traffic, with a real mix of leisure, VFR, business (about 15-20% despite the low frequency levels compared to SOU), students, tourists, in-bound visitors etc. Tourist industry professionals working here travel in the winter and in-bound tourists flood in during the summer. PERFECT!

I wasn't referring to winter loads from Bournemouth in general but winter loads on FR flights from Bournemouth. Taking the CAA stats for January for example. Shannon had a loadfactor of 27%, Madrid was 37%, Pisa was 46%, Girona was 47%, Prestwick was 51% and Dublin was 57%. Out of 6 routes only 2 had loads of more than 50% and neither were much above 50%. I don't know what you would perceive as poor loads but I definitely would consider these loads to be pretty bad. However as far as Ryanair goes you can never say never. Its impossible to predict what they'll do next.

theres always an explanation

Pisa, Madrid, shannon were terrible - they'd only just been launched. Never a good idea to launch in the winter. Dub and Pik have never been that bad - but look at other routes on the Ryanair network (across Europe) in Jan and you will see a similar picture. There must have been something wrong in the UK during that month. Plus routes like Pisa and Shannon from BOH are not the best. I don't understand why chunkier more obvious routes aren't done. I mean how obvious is it that Paderborn is never going to break records.

"I mean how obvious is it that Paderborn is never going to break records."

Actually Paderborn does very well and has only been axed due to a wider policy change of UK flights by Air Berlin rather than anything specific at BOH. The route is used extensivly by British Forces and their families moving between all the bases in and around Salisbury Plain and BFG bases in and around Paderborn. I know lots of people 'narked' by its closure at the end of next week.

Madrid was doing very well, all the flights I was on were over 80% full and many business pax were using it as a transfer to Iberia for onward flights. As Lovejet said, Shannon, Marseille and Nantes all struggled due to the last minute launch but were picking up over the summer. Would be surprised not to see at least Madrid and Marseille back as a summer destination in 2008.

Grrr

Paderborn was a 'virtual' trooping flight.

Now a serious question! Did I see a BAC 1-11 parked close to the terminal today?
