I seem to remember GBEID ditched 3 times sucessfully and got towed back and on the 4th because the fire was already established she ditched safely, burned and sank.

Birmingham / 7554 / +5.6%

Amsterdam / 23963 / -1.1% (despite extra rotation)
Stavanger / 12968 / +12%

Bergen / 4228 / -6.5%

I don't think LTN is too concerning - just lots of EZY customers who have changed from previously using LTN to LGW now. Pretty incredible numbers on the latter route; MAN looking pretty good too. Decline on LHR is interesting although I suspect again that people might be using LGW more. Neither CDG nor AMS look very encouraging although the numbers are still good enough to stick it out for the time being.

LGW! Perhaps it is down to EZY promoting growth at LGW & justifies their decision to come onto the route, as Aero Mad alludes to - I thought I read that EZY were cutting back on LTN generally (or is that STN?).

LHR holding steady I think.

AMS & CDG quite surprising but I guess there could be any number of reasons why that is. Perhaps it justifies why KLM are using Cityhopper on the majority of the rotations & Air France have settled on the Regional E170 - it's been a 170 every time I've seen it recently so perhaps it is as Capt Doony said; that they had settled on the 170 over the 190.

SVG & CPH good growth which, given the strength of the oil industry, should continue - especially with the recent investments by Norwegian oil companies in Aberdeen.

BGO not sure - especially with Wideroe adding a Sat rotation again & intending to add to 3rd rotation on Weds from Aug. Mind you BGO was 3 daily M-F a few years ago!

Pleased to see growth on MAN & BHX. MAN undoubtedly down to the extra Flybe rotations & their promotion to use MAN as a gateway.

GYD no idea! I've no idea what AZAL's expectations are for the route - do most still route via LHR to get to Azer? The route is still there, almost a year on from launch.

Isnt the Baku route subsidised and filled by an oil company and so essentially is almost like a charter, and so loads and growth are immaterial.

Luton - There are fewer flights in this summers schedule than last year - Tuesday and Wednesday mornings seem to be missing most weeks plus the extra Gatwick flight which will have an impact.

Amsterdam/Paris - I suspect that Lufthansa have 'nicked' quite a few passengers. If you look at ticket pricing for connections ABZ - FRA - (any other europe destination) and compare the same via AMS or CDG, then Lufthansa are usually significantly cheaper.

Dublin - big drop here, has moving to a much later flight been a mistake? No onward transatlantic connections any more?

Also don't forget the extra bank holiday in April 2011 (Royal Wedding) which will have had an impact on certain business routes.

Stansted talk

Interesting to read in this morning's paper that a local MSP is touting around airlines to see if any are interested in running a route to STN to expand the competition for London, with Ryanair allegedly interested - but only if...you know the rest!

He's also claimed Flybe would consider it & he's even talked to Easyjet...& Germanwings!

The things politicians do to curry favour with their constituents!!

I remember years ago (!) banging on about hoping someone would launch a STN route after Air UK left it all those years ago...of course no-one did.

Would the demand be there in 2012 though?

StanDsted, hmm not sure.

I mean surely there isn't demand for flights to all 5 London Airports?

Ryanair aren't coming back. I doubt we'll see any more EasyJet expansion at ABZ and Flybe don't even fly to STN! Germanwings! What!

Europort Express

There is a possible (huge emphasis) start up airline based out of Rotterdam that is looking to start operations from 17/09/12 and Aberdeen is one of the 9 destinations that is on their website.

Bookings can allegedly be made from 11/06/12.

Will this just be yet another one of these 'groundbreaking' airlines that only seem to have a fiver in the bank?

Would have thought that SEN might be a better bet than STN.

Aren't the BD LHR-ABZ still up for grabs, or have they gone to BD regional?

Europort Express

Don't get me wrong, some start up airlines make it - otherwise, we would have no airlines at all! They all started from small beginnings.

HOWEVER...starting an new airline now, in the midst of the deepest recession we can remember, which show no signs of ending? With Europe teetering on the brink of crisis as the never-credible Euro finally collapses?

A tennage wizz-kid? Jetstream 31/2?

Sounds all too familiar.

At least a 'new' bmiR already have assets, such as...aircraft...crews...routes...

Sorry, if RTM is to happen, it'll be bmiR, Eastern, Loganair, KLM - in other words, an established carrier that already flies to/from ABZ. Or, if not KLM, maybe a way for Cityjet to gain a foothold in ABZ.

But not Europort Express.

Visiting Saab 2000

Anyone know why there is a Saab 2000 Maritime Patrol at Aberdeen? Are Eastern diversifying??

Visiting Saab 2000

I'm tempted to agree that it was Eastern looking to diversify, but apparently it was indeed something to do with maritime patrol demos. There's a thread in the Mil subforum that asked the same thing. Perhaps the S2000 is being pitched as a sleeker & more modern version of the P3 Orions!

Virgin Express

From todays Express.co.uk

VIRGIN Atlantic is bidding to enter the short haul market, boss Sir Richard Branson revealed yesterday.

He wants to compete with arch-rival British Airways on the Heathrow to Edinburgh and Aberdeen routes.

And he wants to take over Heathrow slots to Nice, Moscow, Cairo and Riyadh.

The tycoon is applying to take over services from bmi following its controversial takeover by British Airways earlier this year.

Brussels is forcing BA to give up the slots to prevent the creation of monopolies on the routes.

Sir Richard believes the routes will act as feeders to his core business – lucrative long haul routes to 32 destinations including Sydney, Shanghai, San Francisco and Tokyo.

A wee bitty quiet

Anyway there's not been much news to discuss recently regarding ABZ so here goes.

May had another large jump in pax numbers using ABZ with them rising 15.7% to 297,600. Impressive growth but for how much longer? There's hardly been an abundance of route announcements this year.

Heard that Monarch are looking to add a UK regional base for S13. Could ABZ be in with a shout? Management have been screaming for leisure and the route to AGP did pretty well with high lf's but the costs of not using a based a/c took their toll.

BA

I was just checking prices for flights to London from Aberdeen return with BA next April 2013.
I was surprised to see so many choices 12 or 13 (not including the couple of London city flights thrown into the mix).
The usual flight numbers along with different flight numbers at different times.
This must be BA using the slots that have been spoken about.
12 flights is a lot in any one day I think.
I may have read it wrong but if I have someone will correct me!!

I believe the intention is to continue operating the bmi schedule for the summer period, with changes happening after that.

All bmi flights now carry a BA codeshare flight number, which is what you will be seeing when searching for flights on the BA website.
