According to posts on another forum, City Star haven't got US Department for Transport permission to serve the US yet. Even with open skies permission to serve the US is needed (safety checks I presume). This takes 4-5 months apparently, although it sounds very routine

Flybe

Whose 757 are X9 leasing (I assume lease & not acquisition), will it be in full X9 colours & when is it due to arrive at ABZ...all assuming the issues with the US Dept of Transport are ironed out (as alluded to by Airhumberside).
Meanwhile, in the ABZ paper (aka P&J ) today, reported BEE looking at a direct SOU link for ABZ (competition for T3?) plus more EXT. Also - & a typical caviat - "more routes" provided there's "an valid economic case" for launching them.
Recent meet with ABZ management, which has been leaked to the P&J.
However INV plans are more advanced, with links to AMS, CDG included.

Is it only me that thinks that Aberdeen-Houston can't be done off 1830m?
TAD and others.

Great Circle distance Aberdeen – Houston is 4012nm.

From Boeing figures: (note:Standard 757-200 not ER/ET variants)

1830m Runway gives a Max Take-Off Weight of 103-104MT

Operating Empty Weight is 57MT or thereabouts – I am assuming (!) here that a 50 seat Business Class fit weighs about the same as 189 ordinary seats.

From Payload/range charts – at long range cruise

Brake release, full fuel, max weight 103MT gives you a payload (pax + bags) of around 13MT (RR RB211-535E4) or 16MT (PW 2037/40) for a range of 4000nm (including reserves)

Or, in more practical terms, 260Kg per passenger (50) for the Rolls version, 320Kg per passenger for the PW model.

Restricting the payload to 150Kg per pax, bumps the range of the Rolls to around 4200nm (including reserves) and the PW one to a shade under 4500nm (including reserves)

So in theory it works….. Trouble is I believe the Payload/range charts are Still Air?

Westbound Transatlantic is not often Still Air flying

Having said that, even a refuelling stop is only going to add 40-60mins to a schedule, and has got to beat the Heathrow/Amsterdam/Paris hassle. One (unsung) advantage would be the nicety of a mid-morning or lunchtime departure – no need to get up at O Dark Hundred for a 0530 check-in, you’d probably have time to nip in past the office for the latest gossip as well.

As for Oil companies not paying Business Class fares – this may be true BUT there are a LOT of oil related businesses that do – I have a number of neighbours & friends who are not employed by Shell/BP etc but travel to Houston several times a month in Business Class with BA/KL/AF (one even goes SK).

BA Miles/Flying Blue may prove a harder obstacle

As you all know, I get all my news from the trusty P&J.

On P1 (front lead) today is Tom Dalrymple & his airline, admitting his airline has lost mi££ions overall this summer thanks to all the long-haul problems.

In relation to ABZ though, he confirms they pulled out of ABZ this winter on account of fuel costs & high landing charges at the airport. I have heard that latter reason before!

However S08 they will be back, as S07 was an "undeniable success", according to Mr D. Same destinations as before (ex MJV) plus AGP.

He also hinted at prospects of more destinations in summer in future, eg. LPA, MLA, France, Italy, N. Portugal.

Interestingly, also transat to Canada (Newfoundland) for the oil/gas sector, perhaps combining it with running down to Florida (MCO) for holidays.

All dependent inevitably on market conditions, oil prices, how successful S08 will be, etc.

Something confused me though, as usual. Headline is "Airline Set To Fly High Again From Aberdeen". However he said the potential expansion at ABZ was merely "aspirational" & depended on many issues (as noted above). Is he therefore saying it's MORE or LESS likely?

Oh also dependent on a L O N G E R runway, better facilities, easier check-in, etc

Not sure if the interview with him was "ABZ" specific, ie. talking to the local press), or for wider consumption.

Have heard on the vine that Eastern will be handling some other major airline in Scotland at ABZ, some thing to do with bears.

Is this the start of things to come?

Stewartflyer,
Can X9 do Aberdeen -Houston without a splash and dash somewhere? This is in all conditions,Headwind,Pegged levels,North Atlantic tracks, and ETOPS,and not just on a good day with the wind behind?
Surely your research can answer this,or are we hiding something?
Actually KLM £2700 was business class.

I presume City Star will use IAH (Houston Intercontinental) and not HOU (Houston Hobby)

ABZ seems to be heli training central today.

All new recruits or an annual driving test for the regulars?

Presume winter is peak season for this - are they expecting N.Sea activity to keep rising, as is suggested, assuming all this training is for the UKCS?

Quite normal these days. All year round I'm afraid with the lack of AS3B and 225 simulators. Also it's night VMC base check time as well. With a barrel of oil at $90+ I can only see it getting busier heli wise.

BAA, if you are constantly talking to airlines, which you say you are, then SURELY you must see the need to expand facilities to cope, instead of ABZ being stuck in a 70s/80s time warp. That's whether or not the extension to the runway is granted (which it seems it will be).

Does the BAA listen to ANYONE who actually KNOWS what is required, or does it just listen to its bean counters, who seem to want to concentrate resources on the likes of T5 at LHR for London Airways, or the shiny new terminal at STN? HOW ABOUT ABZ, WHICH HAS BEEN BAA SCOTLAND'S FASTEST GROWING FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS OR SO?

Don't we count?

OH, & sort out the CR@P transport facilities at the terminal. Only ONE taxi firm allowed to set down passengers at the terminal, & a rubbish bus service.

WELCOME TO ABERDEEN...NOT!!
Hello Mr Cantankorous,

You do have apoint in the many things you say, however your delivery is somewhat sickening. You're obvioulsy massively bias against BAA, I'm not here to defend them, just you should try and apply a little more fact and tact to what you say and try and look at it holistically, instead of vile cynicism. Things don't happen overnight, there's a myriad of areas to cover and I'm sure as someone in the aviation industry you can appreciate that.

Regards,

Emilio Largo

With thanks to Kevin Brown, or whichever BAA stooge that was.

EDIT:
Hmmm....Emilio Largo, weren't he a Bond baddie? In which case, before I'm exterminated, I LOVE BAA REALLY!!!

ps.Stewartflyer, sorry, thanks for the heads up, before I forget!

Emillio, you're a troll right?

Anyone who is the slightest bit familiar with the operations at Aberdeen will recognise the problems and frustrations frequently expressed here are long term and could have been mitigated if a little planning and forethought had been used by Ferrovial BAA

What did the morning LHR bump into today to cause its return (BA1305 I think)?

Flock of small birds, or seagulls (bigger)? Or geese (bigger), seen as there are flocks of them on the go as well.

Trust was nothing too serious, although seems quite unusual (up here at least) to see a jet returning. Given runway length, they usually head for EDI if anything rears its head.

Have they caught the fox yet, heard recently one still going about.

Fox still to be seen crossing whiskey between W1 and Stand 1, heard the farmer has lost a couple of sheep recently.
