Anyone with contacts at Cityjet? Odd one, I had booked for myself and family to fly Cityjet on the 22nd December from LCY to DRS coming back on the 28th, did this on the website - all fine. Have now been advised that the flight is cancelled, and the last flight on this route is the 20th December. They are unable to tell me why, but they think it's something to do with airport strategy - presumeably at LCY. Anyone know whats going on?

In my experience, LCY virtual closes down during Xmas / New Year. I once had tickets to and from MUC with LH when they used to fly there and they got cancelled and had to fly from LHR

I've just posted in the CWL thread that CityJet appears to have axed the CWL-GLA route this winter leaving CWL-EDI at 2 x daily on weekdays and daily on Sats and Suns, with ORY daily, an overall frequency that appears achievable with one aircraft.
The draft Wales Assembly budget published this week which will apparently go through with Lib Dems supporting Labour includes a £3 million provision for route development at CWL.

Seems like a good move for both airlines....VLM now free to pursue its own opportunities and WX management free to focus on developing WX. Also generates a decent return for Intro already having owned the airline for less than a year.
Still no clarity on a future aircraft order though. Competition on the LCY routes in the form of BACF and flybe will force WX to up their game and develop additional routes beyond the legacy AF / LCY routes.

Interesting. But wouldn't VLM want to go back to doing the scheduled services it used to do pre-WX? If so, what is left of WX? It's little more than the old VLM plus Dublin and a bit of Cardiff as far as I can see.

Well, WX hasn't even kept all of the old VLM. It's inherited VLM's LCY-AMS and LCY-RTM routes, at least until the KLM pilot unions flex their muscles and demand that they be operated on Cityhopper Embraers as the price of some other concession. I'd guess that a future VLM scheduled network at Antwerp would include LCY-ANR in some sort of codeshare with WX. What else is left? Impending carnage on DUB-LCY, plus a limited-duration ACMI deal with Air France. Cardiff uses a VLM aircraft and is not material for Cityjet. There just isn't much there there in terms of a profitable, sustainable network that'd justify refleeting. I note that management had talked about announcing a new fleet decision about a month ago, but that's come and gone. While I wish Cityjet (or any airline) well, I just don't see how they can make the numbers add up to justify a new fleet.

Thanks. Yes, with core routes reverting to codeshares or likely going back to VLM there doesn't seem to be anything of substance for CityJet except the original LCY-DUB, which as you note is now a total bloodbath, and a weakening LCY-AMS/ORY. It puzzles me that a pleasant carrier that once posed a serious challenge to BACF has ended up in this position.

If they were to opt for the C-Series over the current E-Jet as an example, the range of that aircraft opens up a world of new possibilities from LCY including US East Coast (tech stop required admittedly), Russia etc.. There is a niche for this airline, the C-Series could be the key to unlocking it.
Re the VLM sale, I'd imagine there is a non-compete clause on certain routes as a pre-condition of the sale to the VLM management. VLM will most likely retain a limited LCY presence whilst developing its network from Antwerp.

VLM to Operate SSJ100LR's
Looks like this has been in the pipeline for a while....VLM taking SSJ100LR's...
VLM set to become first European Superjet operator - 10/29/2014 - Flight Global

Christ. It will either turn out to have been a brave and brilliant move, or a fundamentally disastrous one. All I can say is good luck with that one - I wouldn't have had the guts to do that if I was in their position.
