Network alignment by US Airways triggers job cuts

Pete
I wonder will the Mayor of Shannon be on the Radio and in the newspapers shouting about the 'utter contempt' US Airways are showing to the whole of the west of Ireland by pulling out? Oh wait no thats reserved for Aer Lingus. Other airlines including Ryanair can axe routes at Shannon without the bat of an eyelid but when Aer Lingus try to axe loss making routes or on a recent occasion reduce frequency by one rotation per week, its an outrage and they're showing utter contempt towards the entire West of Ireland!

Just reported on Irish News.
Ryanair is cutting the number of flights out of Shannon Airport by 75% from next April
which will result in the loss of 150 jobs.

At the moment, the airline has four aircraft based in Shannon. That will be cut to just one.

The airline's current contract with the airport runs out in April 2010.Shannon Airport has confirmed that it is not entering a new five-year agreement with Ryanair, blaming the airline's 'unreasonable demands'.

In a statement, Ryanair said it had offered Shannon better cost terms than are presently being offered by many other lower cost airports in better destinations all over Europe.

I heard the Shannon Airport Authority were concidering taking legal action against in their non fulfilment of the 5 year deal - appartently FR did not meet the passenger numbers promised.
FR told the SAA that they wouldn't pay any fine and SAA state what is the point in doing a new deal if FR to not honour the terms.
I hope other airports stick up for themselves, but then again SAA did get into bed with ´Mick the Ripper`.

Ryanair and Shannon

Ryanair's offer was one that Shannon couldn't accept. The original deal was based on high volume but for some reason the spend per passenger in the shops, car parks etc never matched expectations. Maybe these were wildly optimistic in the 1st place.

Apart from the recesstion the novelty of stag parties in Poland that involved long return bus trips to Shannon from places as far flung as North Mayo and West Cork has worn off.

Many people swore "never again" particularly if the return journey involved a late arrival into Shannon.

Ryanairs proposals this time seemed much more modest and realistic and may yet form the basis for an agreement once the Shannon lobby starts pressurisng the Government/DAA.

Ryanair have banned a duty free bags if you have a roll-on bag.

This has probably dampened airport retail sales - Ryanair killing a source of revenue that helps reduce airport costs?

It's a pity they couldn't do a deal, however there will be opportunities for other airlines going forward.

Therein also lies the opportunity for Shannon. As with any industry, when a company becomes too dependent on a single customer, the company becomes highly vulnerable.
Strong companies are those with a diverse customer base, and no single customer providing too much of the sales revenue.

The next 18 months for Shannon will be very painful, but I believe it'll emerge a stronger airport better able to plan for the future.

Well Done Shannon.....time to stand up to them!!!!

You know...an agreement with them is one-way!!! They just walk away if it doesn't suit them....and then hope that they will drag you out through the courts for a couple of years ...just to do a deal on th steps on the High Court!!

There model was for years ...We will bring them in if you give us cheap charges and you can catch them for a few bob when they are on the ground!!! BUT THEN... they introduce on-line checkin and pax turn up at -40 and walk straight into Departures!! AND they introduce the 1x Bag rule and frighten pax from buying from the airside shops!!! How the F%*k do they expect the airport to make money with Zero airport charges.

The tide is turning.....airports are under pressure and costs have to be either met...wither by charging them on OR making major cutbacks in operation!!! Rates, Electricity ...and now Commission for Aviation Regulation charges are just going up...with no suggestion how these are to be recouped.!!

Well done Shannon.....time to re-invent yourself!!! It was never going to be a fairy-tale ending.....this day was bound to come around!!

Power to the People!!!! (as Cliff Richard once said!!)

In some ways I wish ryanair would leave shannon altogether. I can see them still poking their nose into every new route that opens up by new carriers and it wouldnt surprise me if they added a second aircraft just to enable this in the future. One aircraft will not be enough but unfortunately no one else will get a chance to exploit the void.

Let the Ryans go

Let Ryanair go, Shannon, you will be better off. Dealing with the bully is dissuading better airlines from operating there. Stick to your standards and adopt a policy of attracting a RANGE of operators to provide a broad service from SNN. You have done this in the past. Build on the US pre-immigration service. Attract the passenger with money who is allowed to take their purchases on board!

THERE IS NO MONEY IN LCC's FOR AIRPORTS but let them operate in the sidelines to support the real players who will be back once we are out of this downward cycle.

Bearing in mind snn's professionalism in getting CNN to do a big promo on them and regardless of whether some of it had to be paid for by snn or not you still got to keep in mind the clear, obvious professionalism of the SAA people so therefore I would still say there is long time to go yet before final negotiations are concluded between snn and FR. Like in any similar business or union talks there is always the eleventh hour card to be played so I would not be surprised if there is yet a deal struck by the parties in snn and FR to keep a few aeroplanes in the midwest. Snn know that and FR do as well.

Brickmanship and gamesmanship.

Ryanair could serve Shannon with 1 aircraft based but use aircraft from other bases to fly in and out without trimming back the schedule too much as most destinations served from Shannon are to other bases. i.e. the single based unit could serve the non base airports eg Beauvais, Gatwick etc.

This will be a bit of a landmark case if Shannon do not concede. Despite Aer Lingus's challenges at the moment would they look at some of the markets? I think if SAA can get Aer Lingus interested Ryanair could very easily do a U turn...?

cant imagine EI opening more routes from snn... I'd say they'll stick to growing their cork base! but theres plenty of other airlines for snn to do deals with...
Easyjet
Flybe
Jet2
Or why not try get klm or LH to do flights to amsterdam, frankfurt offering 100s of connections

Ryanair and Shannon

I can't see Ryanair walking away from Shannon. They'll keep one plane there and operate the more profitable routes from overseas bases. Shannon correct to stand up to them but this deal was always questionable even in 2004.

I can't understand how the DAA ever signed off on it.

I dont think KLM to Amsterdam would work because they would have a lot to compete with EI twice daily service from Cork.
