to be fair to snn this was a political decision. any economic benefit the airport derived was a fringe benefit. just as it was when soviet troops passed through snn in the early 60s to go to cuba and nearly start nuclear war even though we had an 'irishman' in the white house.

SNN needs to start concentrating on getting Scheduled air service and not rely on troop traffic, They were expecting to be super busy after CBP opened but this has not materialised...

i agree. the cbp is beginning to resemble a solution many vested interests clung to in the hope it would divert attention from the harsh reality facing the airport. snn isn't helped by local politicans who are mostly delusional and in constant election mode.

I've said it before - CBP customs preclearance only offers tangible benefits to passengers whose journey originates in SNN and are connecting to an onward destination in the US. They can connect quickly in the US without needing to collect/recheck their luggage or clear security.
So it is useful to airlines originiating services from SNN to US hubs with a large proportion of connecting passengers.
It's of prettty much no value to stopover traffic, except for tech stops (BA), or charters heading to a US airport with no CBP. Even then, the hassle of unloading/reloading passengers and luggage reduces its value. The management's idea that it would create an influx of new business was a costly fantasy.

Nice to see developments for Aer Arann and an interest in Shannon. However, I would expect Ryanair to reinstate competing routes to all but Manchester. Given the effort that Ryanair made in previous years to put Aer Arann's lights out it would seem most unlikely that they will stand idly by and let Aer Arann have this to themselves.
Aer Arann have picked up a few routes in the wake of Ryanair eg Dublin-Cardiff, Blackpool, Durham & Doncaster. If Shannon is left to Aer Arann in the guise of Aer Lingus Regional they should do well.

Fine Gael TD Pat Breenwelcomed Aer Arann’s decision, describing it as a "vote of confidence" in Shannon airport and a boost for the region.
“I hope this is just the start of the fight-back for Shannon Airport. Now that Aer Lingus Regional is committed to developing short-haul services out of Shannon, its parent company Aer Lingus will also commit to deliver year-round transatlantic services to Shannon," he said.

Aer Lingus is NOT the parent company of Aer Arann!

He's a politician, he likes to think he knows the story, when really he hasn't a clue. He'll be the same person who will publicly slam Aer Lingus if they ever cut another route from Shannon, while saying nothing when Ryanair cuts 75% of it's network from the airport. Ungreatful fools is all people like him are...

Ok , So a local politician gets a bit excited with some good news for SNN. Sure it is good news and hopefully more will come. I wish RE would introduce a one way leg from DUB to SNN in the evening to complement the EI service in the morning for the day traveller. Whether they are the one company or not, I wouldnt really care.

That would be good a day return for SNN-DUB (visa-versa) ...
I think (good times) this franchise should have been launched ! RE/EI would have built a higher consumer base at GLA for e.g. with the high frequencies between the both now, but hopefully we'l hear more positive announcements now about the GLA-DUB as its been poor for a while now!!

So with the announcement of 4 new UK routes from Aer Lingus Regional for Shannon: Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow. What routes are still missing from Shannon for the coming winter? Which carrier is best placed to operate them? Some ideas:
Edinburgh: Ryanair, Aer Lingus Regional, Easyjet
Malaga: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Katowice / Krakow: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Wizz, LOT
Warsaw: Aer Lingus, Wizz, LOT
Belfast: Aer Lingus Regional, Aer Arann, Flybe, Easyjet
Leeds / Doncaster: Ryanair, Aer Lingus Regional, Flybe, Easyjet, Jet 2
Newcastle / Durham Tees Valley: Ryanair, Aer Lingus Regional, Flybe, Easyjet, Jet 2
Brussels / Charleroi: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Brussels Airlines
Amsterdam: Aer Lingus, Transavia, KLM
Faro: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Murcia / Alicante: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Lanzarote: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Barcelona / Girona: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Milan / Bergamo: Ryanair, Aer Lingus
Prague: Aer Lingus, Wizz, Czech Airlines
Budapest: Aer Lingus, Wizz, Malev
Frankfurt / Hahn: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Lufthansa
Riga: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, airBaltic
Rome: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Alitalia
Madrid: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Vueling, Iberia
Berlin: Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Germanwings, Lufthansa
With the exception of Edinburgh and Malaga, I don't hold much hope of Shannon securing any of the above routes for next winter unless they get back into bed with Ryanair

Don't expect to see easyJet in EIRE any time soon!
They sort of having this unofficial agreement with Ryanair whereby easyJet don't fly to DUB, SNN or ORK and Ryanair don't chase them around Southern Ireland!
It's worked for a number of years now.
