Shannon Airport has not once supported the "save the west lobby" (You might seeing as you go on about it so frequently

Sorry for being pedantic, but there was a press release issued in local and national media which has yet to appear on the airport website

old news really but good to see it confirmed. In the current climate any new development is positive. Let's hope it works well for BA. And while not a new route from SNN as such, it is extra income and thats always good.

It will be interesting to see if SNN actually gets the full US Customs and Border status, and what effect (if any) it would have on business through the airport.

The full customs post would draw additional traffic, particularly as they could fly to any airfield at all in the USA from Shannnon.

Its very possible that we could see something like the Jet Airways system in Brussels implemented in Shannon (is it a scissor hub or something?)

i'd say that is the hope. Will be interesting to see if anyone takes it up. Assuming that SNN gets Customs/Border post it would put it in an excellent position for this type of operation, coupled with decent runway length, plenty of capacity etc..just a question of will anyone take the plunge..

Snn-ord

Some speculation in irish press that snn-ord may face the chop in the coming months.

Saw that...then the indo has this
Time will tell.. could either be the usual local 'politicians' looking for column inches or there could be truth in it. Would have thought they would have made a simple "no comment" until Thursday if they were going to cut it rather than deny it for 2 days..but sure it is Aer Lingus.

The cynic in me notes that he denied they were going to announce anything, rather than denied they were going to do anything. I don't remember them announcing that Dublin-Copenhagen, Dublin-Helsinki or Cork-Prague were to be scrapped, but that didn't stop it from happening.

and I would agree with the cynic in you..time will tell.

Interestingly anyone I know who has gone stateside from SNN recently has gone with Delta, Continental or even via CDG with Air France...in my own case it was just a lot cheaper with Delta so wouldnt surprise me at all if their numbers are well down from Shannon. Can't imagine it would be cheaper through CDG at all but know a few people who have done that. There is certainly a marked downturn in US visitors all around the West Coast so something will have to give..

Merely coincidental that next winter, if I recall correctly, is when Ryanair's initial discount deal with SNN comes to an end. And FR do have a certain amount of "previous" in pulling services after the initial discount period has come to an end (usually accompanied by press releases about xx% increases in airport charges).

2 and 2 makes 5?

Not so Cyrano, the Ryanair/Shannon incentive package kicked off ca. May 2005 and was for a 5 year period, so your conspiracy theory does not stand up.....

Ryanair

I'd say Ryanair are just playing hardball with Shannon and the Government. They're maybe over playing their hand as the Shannon lobby must have mixed feelings about the Ryanair operation there.

Amazing that the cancellation of one route (Heathrow) causes bedlam, but the threat of 20 route cancellations has barely eeked a murmur.

I fail to understand the connection between the government imposing a 10 euro tax on passangers - to be paid by the passengers - and the need for Ryanair to threaten to pull routes, with suggested ruination, in Shannon, or anywhere else.

Ryanair want to charge as little as possible to fill their seats on their aircraft.

If they were to charge 10 euros one-way inc. taxes it would cost them 5 euros more than it would have done.

If they were to charge 10 euroes PLUS taxes of say 20 euros then it would cost the customer 30 euros which may put them off of travelling (even though that is very cheap but you know what I mean!) The theory is that it will put people off of travelling which will reduce the load factor on Ryanair flights.

Ryanair relies on full aircraft as it makes most of its money on ancillary costs. Less passengers means less income whether it is going to the government or not.

Hope that helps!

Government tax

I doubt if the 10 euro tax is really that critical, it was Ryanair that imposed a 10 euro return credit card charge earlier this year making their genuine free flights of 2007 a thing of the past.

Oh yeah great news......all we need now is airlines and passengers, the airlines that have retracted on US services over the last year would have been well aware of this impending development, yet still retracted. I don't see any big airline queue tripping over themselves to operate new services.......so no I won't be popping any bubbly.....hopefully I'm proved wrong! I suppose the shoppers will get to the shops quicker when they arrive stateside!
