@a340rider:

what was the point of the post? As in seriously, not trying to be snide or anything but I don't get the point.

I thought A340rider's post was very funny and he hit the nail on the head. By the way he was using sarcasm!

November Payday

I guess everybody got paid for Oct? Now that a new payday has arrived for Nov, perhaps, once again, the big guy will purposely not pay the local staff before Christmas to "keep them working".

I keep hearing of guys out there not getting plane tickets for training / rotation home. Sim events cancelled for lack of payment (yawn, same old stuff).

Expats seem to like the 30/30 rotation, though.

Not that much....

100 Million USD, is a much lower figure than I would have guessed. It doesn't sound like all that much to me considering the poor load factors on the Jo'burg and New York flights and the financial waste that occurs due to outdated corporate structures. Not that much cash in the grand scheme of things........

With Ndubz "I know more than Boeing" Ek...pu and Vic... Ego at the helm I can imagine exactly how that new and enticing opportunity will work:-

Competitive Salary Package = competitive with hotel waiters

Excellent standards of training = Items such as how to use a mobile phone whilst taxying and how to cover up drugs smuggling by my mates.

A highly organised & supported environment = They can buy an excellent system that a monkey could use and then not use it other than to make the system more disorganized that it could possibly ever have been if it was just left to Bernard to do. At the same time they will support you by making your personal load lighter by taking the shirt of your back.

Great opportunities for career advancement = A chance to kiss other parts of the body other than their royal behinds in order to be promoted from nobody to dogsbody and possibly to Vic & Ndubz personal footrest
."

Glad to see i'm not the only one with an opinion.....

So, in terms we can all understand, pre-tax losses are:

2006 - operated less than 3 months. Presumably big losses, no data.

2007 - $20 million USD loss

2008 - $30 million USD loss

2009 - $26.6 million USD loss

2010 - to be determined.

This, all before taxes, as reported to the US government. I'm going to guess that they don't pay that much in taxes, because whatever they owe, they just wouldn't pay. At least not timely.

All in all, though, far less losses than I would have guessed (which makes me think that the books are cooked, too. Certainly, they didn't want the US government to think they were broke). How much longer they can continue with this performance (that they themselves reported to the US government) is the single big question. It will fail if not turned around. It's just a matter of time.

Of course, the losses don't tell the whole story of the HUGE debt. I doubt they even have an accurate account of what is owed, because much, like the millions of dollars in debt to the country of Niger, or the contract airline Denim, is just written off.

Anybody get paid yet for Nov ?

Also, I get numerous PM's asking "should I go to Arik ?". Folks, there is a reason that this company must offer 30/30 rotations to attract (and retain) pilots.

If you have an offer from, or are working at, another airline that that doesn't have 30/30 rotations, and NOTHING ELSE IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, sure, go for it at Arik.

But, if that's your singular employment issue, how stupid will you feel if Arik goes bust in a few months? Or they decide to stop 30/30 ?

There's virtually nothing that points to long term viability.

Thanks for keeping it real(without B*tching)

OBA1
As a fresh FAA cpl who is a Nigerian, i have much reason to look at flying at home as an alternate option.Prior to joining this forum, i have been clueless about the sad circumstances Arik pilots face. i guess i have bin blinded by my sightings of its Airbus heavy(s) at heathrow and once at JFK.....i wont lie, i had Arik and Air Nigeria in mind when i decided on my 737(classic/NG) type rating, which i will soon be starting.....thanks for being the most informative contributor to this forum, ur posts help a great deal.

You're most welcome. As you have probably already figured out, Arik isn't exactly the airline they should be / could be. The turn over rate of management is high. They still don't pay on time. Etc, etc, etc.

Another new manager just stepped in 1 Dec, and has made the usual grandiose plans and promises (thankfully, he spared us the "Emirates of Africa" blather that was popular last month). We've heard this stuff so many times now from so many managers, I doubt many pilots will even take notice.

Good luck with your training, and remember, it's a big world outside of Nigeria.

New Manager to Manage What ? Where is My Pay its Xmas Month for crying out loud !!!!

Another new manager just stepped in 1 Dec
Ohhhhhh......Did I miss that all too important memo....Darn it...
"New manager being hired".....to replace the one who has provided countless months of service to arik air.

P.S. Mr Ex.Manager dont forget to make good use of your lifetime free travel benefits, and wear your golden rolex proudly. After all you have given Arik some of the best dedicated months of your life in. Also I hope you were one of the guys who spend all day smoking outside thereby turning an 8 hour day into a measly 4 hour one, lunch and drink included.

I hope you people understand sarcastic wording....lol

On a more serious note WHERE IS MY MONEY AJ STOP EFFING AROUND AND PAY UP.....NO more Food and Laundry at devine as we speak.

It depends on how you look at it.

As ****ty as things are at arik, i know hundreds of 250-1000hour yanks who would give a lung of get an opportunity to fly jets and fly with an active airline like arik.some have said to me( their words not mine)-"i dont care if i dont get paid at all,and i dont care what goes on there. screw late pay! is that the problem? i will go to a civilwar country for all i care"....."jet-time" and "hours on type" seem to be what i hear them say the most.you will here this alot becuz its hard climbing the airline ladder in America. I was a CFII when a baby 250hr Nigerian who i mentored (till he asked for a new instructor)got a job with you guys some time back and it shocked the props off my engine.he got the desired hours he needed, left arik and moved on(the plane all along)....i think deep inside, u guys still have something to be happy about.......Shout out to OBA1

RWEDARYET,

Don't know why the logos would be covered, but I expect it was still on the canadian register if Bombardier are doing the ferry flights - which wouldn't be surprising as the last I heard Arik were very short of Q400 crews and probably can't spare them. Keeping it on the Canadian Register probably makes it easier for them to get overflight permissions where needed and they don't need Nigerian licence validations for the crew.

Dubai seems a little off track for a delivery from Toronto to Lagos though - first deliveries were originally planned via Europe and down the west coast of Africa although don't know if it happened like that in the end.

Danger

"i dont care if i dont get paid at all,and i dont care what goes on there. screw late pay! is that the problem? i will go to a civilwar country for all i care"

That's a problem world wide with pilots. It's why at the low end of the spectrum, pay and conditions are so bad (supply and demand) and at the top end, the pay is relatively good (again, supply and demand). So, people will continue to line up, no matter what. A significant number would work for free, or even pay to fly. Just reality.

Pilots seem to be immune to the knowledge that only a teeny, tiny number of pilots make it to the big dollar, wide body captain job. The overall majority will just be pawns to poor operators like Arik.

In a world with too many pilots, and many with such low standards, Arik doesn't have people banging down the door to work there. In four years of operation, I couldn't even guess how many have come and gone. A lot.

The Q400... Arik isn't getting any more Bombardier products, unless they paid cash up front. Like every single entity that Arik does business with, Bombardier really took a bath with the Q400's. Those planes sat, LITERALLY, for years, with Bombardier trying to get cash out of Arik. The manufacturer withdrew its representative at Arik in Lagos this past September.

As always, caveat emptor.
