I don't think Jet2 give a sh1t about recruiting the "right" (as we, the pilots, would define the word "right") people so to speak. This is a minimum risk venture and is influenced by their bottom line. People will front 25K for a TR as a prerequisite and agree to a 70% contract. They will undergo some degree of assessment; fail it and no TR course. Get on the TR course and fail it, no TR and no job. Cost to Jet2 is limited to nothing. There will be a lot of "fat" in the initial 25K investment which in turn bolsters the bottom line - the overall dictator to the recruitment process.
What's the worst that can happen? Not enough bods to take 70% contracts and SSTRs? You will see some advert for a summer contract for 737/757 rated crew on FlightGlobal in order to plug the gap. Jet2 are trying to enterprise and capitalise first and to be frightfully honest; I don't see them having to go down the contractor route anyway. Oxford Cadets will likely fill the holes.
Someone mentioned about CAA regulations in relation to the
experience ratio of crew. There almost certainly is some sort of regulation, however my feeling is that the current crew composition at Jet2 will be classified as "experienced" (no recruitment of low houred bods since 2007 or something?) For the limited numbers being recruited (FOs at BFS/GLA/EDI??) I wouldn't really be surprised if they filled every space with cadets.

The theory of filling the majority of slots with cadets is an obvious one.
However with cadets needing a minimum of 40 sectors and the numbers required it is impossible to get the training sectors in during the quiet winter months, TR guys will be vital to get everybody online in time. Its going to be a quiet winter for the drivers already in the company

Hi Guys,
I said no to paying for rating, but said I'd listen to alternatives....
I said I'd prefer 100% contract but would consider 70% for a command.
They gave me interview dates on the phone, and I'll look forward to hearing the deal on the assessment day.

I think you will find that the substance required is properly spelled "vaseline" (with an E on the end of whatever you mean).
I have no dog in this fight but I have an indelible memory of doing a sub-service for Channex back from Guernsey to Bournemouth with flowers many years ago.
I walked into their Ops Room at 0900 to witness the nearest equivalent that I have ever seen (since I had left the RAF some years before) to a "morning prayers" session. PM was in the process of tearing apart a Herald crew who had not done as well as he saw it during the night (with his vast experience on Hunters in the RAF) than he would have done.
I suspect that the crew had more night hours than he had had hot dinners.
I was embarrassed to be there listening to his rantings.
I have to say that I was lucky enough never, ever to have even vaguely considered working for him or his kind.

I applied about a month ago. Got a call on Monday, with the initial questions re paying for type rating etc. I said I would at this stage just to keep the application going. Got a call today giving me a date for assessment in 2 weeks.
I currently fly out of Glasgow, and want a GLA or EDI base.
I've got over 4000hrs with nearly 4 years command on medium TP. I would have to take a 50% salary cut, but i'm considering it as I turn 40 next year and feel I need to be on a jet by then. I stupidly turn down an offer from Globespan 4 years ago to get command with my current company, and don't want to make the same mistake again. That said, it pains me to pay for TR and 70% contract. However, if I go, listen to what they say, get offered the job, then maybe I can negotiate a better deal. I can live with paying for TR if I get a 100% salary.

JetScrew.you
I said I would yes to everything...For one reason.
A bit of interview practice and a sim check.
However I will turn down the position, I hate been treated like a schmuck. Especially as recruitment is starting to filter through in other companies. I am not looking for £100K a year or to fly a 747.
I just want a quality of life, and the feeling that when I go to work, I haven't paid to be there.
So my answer will eventually be - ram it.
I am just going to use the process as a learning experience. After all JetScrew.you are paying the costs.

Guys, having seen your comments lately i am shocked to see how low your pay scale is.
I worked for them as an engineer, and i thought that was bad enough, but see how your skill base is treated, is disgusting, its no wonder that this thread is busy !
I truely hope that senior management look long and hard at this. Some how i doubt it though.

All 70% commands this year upgraded to 100% commands, all part time contracts offered full time. More aircraft arriving, as expected people moving on as is healthy, 70% now, will that be 70% in 2 years time ? Who knows but i know where i would place my bet !!
If you want EDI/GLA or BFS or NCL you will probably get it on first bid post training so if that is home its perfect. For those who are considering being abusive down the phone, shouting "ram it" as has been identified above have a thought for those who are doing the phoning.
Jet2 have really always recruited people for their home/local base and personally i think its an excellent idea. Be abusive or whatever else you like quite a lot of crew actually enjoy working there, take from that what you will.

Those of you who have had the self respect to say no to the very first question regarding the TR, respect to you all! You have to remember that this is purely business. If Jet2 can get people to cough up, and believe me there's been plenty that will, then that will be order of the day. It's not personal...it's just bare faced cheek. I sincereley hope that more and more of you guys will turn down this awful package but fear that they may get close to the numbers they're looking for. For those coming along to assesment days for " experience " at the cost of Jet2, don't waste your leave days or your breath...save it too cool your porridge

I think 'ram it' is metaphorical. I had a chat with the bloke after a polite no, and I'd be very surprised if any other professional pilots were rude. The sentiment is to communicate to the company and the industry as a whole that a proportion (yet to be determined) of experienced candidates are unwilling to accept these terms just to fly jets.

25k? that would buy a nice new BMW (or whatever floats your boat) to enjoy while waiting for a proper job. The 737 is poor value at moment. What happens when J2 have finished with you?. I assume you join the stacks of unemployed 737 drivers with 1000's of hrs. Goodluck!. J2 might not want you back the following year - unless you pay them another 25k of course.

But consider for a moment, why has Mr Meerkat permitted these (welcome) changes this year? Is it because he's a tart with a heart or has he finally been "comparing the market.com" . I will be much more interested to see how many 100% contracts he has to sanction during this recruitment phase to get his numbers right.

Guys/Gals,
Any feedback on the Interview Day? From previous posts I know the overall format but what sort of questions did you get? Are they the BA style competancy based, ie 'Give an example of when you ......', OR good old fashioned 'what have you done' , 'what can you bring' style?
Thanks in advance
