1st interview for SIA

Heylo guys..im Redwan from malaysia.I will attend an interview for singapore airlines cadet pilot which will be held on 24th of april.I'll be joining Malaysia Airlines for their engineer's apprentice program on the 17th April 2006.I've taken my Licence Without Type Rating in Airframe trade which was conducted by Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia on 16th of March 2006 and currently waiting for the result.Actually, this exam is one step to become a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.I've browsed thru askcaptainlim.com and I'm currently preparing and making some notes for the 1st interview.

My questions are:

1. What actually the interviewers want to see from a candidate during the interview?
2. They also might aware that we as candidates some sort of preparing by memorizing things.Do they will take this as a consideration? I mean the memorizing stuffs?
3. So, when i attend the interview,do i need to tell them that i'm currently on the mid of journey to become a licenced aircraft maintenance engineer?Does this have a negative impact on the interview?
4.Actually, when i was in school ,i had a very bad @poor english. And for 3 years during my diploma studies i tried to improve to a level what i have now slowly and i did it by myself without attending any english classes. So, do i have to attend any english classes before attending that interview?
Or, do they'll accept that if i understand them and know what they ask then i answer them using simple and basic english?

For your guys' information, actually my childhood dream was to be a pilot. Then when i was in Form 5 in a government school, i performed very badly in my public examination so that i did'nt have enough qualification to join any cadet pilot programs (even i've sent my applicaition to MAS for 6 times and they never called me). Then later i joined Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology and took my Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (specializaition in Avionics).Thank God, my final CGPA is 3.95.Actually i joined this institution and get my diploma just to cover up my previous examination, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, which i performed badly. After i obtained my diploma, i again tried to apply for cadet pilot programs from Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines.Guess what, i get an email from SIA stated that they require me to attend the first interview. My first journey to fulfill my childhood dream has started.

I do hope you guys can help me at least by giving me some advices. This is my dream, and I'll make it become a reality.

I don't know about now, but when I applied, there were 9 of us who went for the medical. All of us cleared it, but 3 were rejected subsequently. The reason cited was something about some manpower changes. I asked around and a few other batches experienced the same thing. Hopefully, that's not what's happening now.

They will usually send you an email no matter what the result. However, if you do not hear from them in about 1-2 months, call them up. Try Edward. Sometimes, they forget to send some of these emails out. Happened to a friend of mine.

Speaking of which, bad news travels fast. Word out is that the latest ATPL results has thrown up a new underachiever - 2 (yes TWO) marks for Met Theory. What do you do with characters like that? This cadet being ex-RSAF makes it even harder to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Too bad pple usually only find out how good he is after seletar, or when a cadet screws up and he has to step in and put in a good word to help keep the cadet. I feel sorry for his recent misfortune. The younger instructors are the ones who are more bo chap and less willing to stick their necks out. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

To answer your questions...
1. They want to see confidence, looks, presentation....like any other interview you go to for a professional career.
2. A lot of people don't know this....but they can tell if you memorize information by the answers you give. As I said before, it's not an oral exam. You don't memorize and spit them out.
3. Yes you should. It shows you have goals to meet. Like they do ask some people before..."where do you see yourself in 10yrs from now...with SIA and not with SIA." Most important is keep a balance lifestyle and not just pin all your hopes on becoming a pilot...or at least show them that you know how to plan your life and know where you are heading.
4. English is an important language. Manuals, conversations, commands and everything are all in english. If ATC or your co-pilot doesn't understand you, it creates havoc and misunderstandings and frustration. That is why in this line, communication of utmost importance. If you think your english is not up to standard, brush up on it, because even if you get in, the amount of studying and reading you've got to do can kill. It may just stab you in the back.
Don't worry so much about the interview. The more you worry about it, the more stressful it gets and you might breakdown during the interview. (like some of the guys study so much for it but during the intervew, get so nervous that they say the wrong thing eg. type of engines and such.) Prepare but don't over-prepare. Take it easy, be yourself. Wish you all the best!

*nods*.. I totally agree with you... People usually realise his kindness AFTER seletar phase.. As for me.. I received his kindness more than once... I failed twice for my engines in tech paper.. He helped to plead my sponsor for a third attempt... When he called me into his office, there wasn't any scolding nor accusation.. Mr P just hand over a warning letter and say "this is your last chance, just one paper, clear it!"

As for my ATPL, he wrote a good report to my sponsor after I failed my met theory... I managed to glimpse abit of it during my exiting interview. He suggested to allow me for another attempt. Although it didn't happen, I'm still very greatful for his kindness eventhough we ain't related to him.

During his recent misfortune, I was still in seletar. He went on leave for about a week to 2. But when he returned, he showed his braveness and didn't let it hinder his care and concern for us. Sincerely wish him all the best and groom many more outstanding cadets for SQ...

To all SQ cadet-to-be, do show your respect to Mr P whilst in Seletar and appreciate every "gawd-damn-it" he's going to say. Many of those who got to "use that thing on your shoulder" are now very admirable pilots flying big jets.

saviour24,

So long as you have the required GCE 'O' Level (or equivalent) passes, and possess a GCE 'A' level or Diploma from polytechnic, you will be eligible to apply. But do mention in your cover letter or during the interview that you are expected to graduate in two weeks time. Be advised, that Aeronautical Engineering degree from certain Universities are not recognised by SIA. This means that, although you are regarded as a graduate during the interview, you will not be receiving 'graduate allowance' during training.

NinerVictor,

My highest qualification so far (not to mention my soon to come degree) would be my SPM which is equivalent to Singapore's 'O' Level...at the moment as far as i am concern , i did not meet SIA's minimum requirement..Will SQ consider my application?

saviour24,

I would say it's fine to apply now. Quite a number of people applied when they were in their final year. So two weeks should not be much of an issue. But make sure you state that clearly in your application, or it might be overlooked.

Passion,

29 years of age is fine so long as you were not bumming the years away. SIA website will not indicate when an intake will commence. Nontheless, you can still apply, but the waiting period between interviews or offer of employment can be very long. To know when an active recruitment is going on, you have to keep a look out on Straits Times' classified ads.

Passion,

Yes it does seem that SIA is no longer as strict with the pure science requirement as they used to be. You should submit your CV, cover letter as well as the completed application form from SIA's website. The instructions on the application form are very straight forward, eg labelling 'Cadet Pilot' on the envelope. Please do some research on your own regarding such matters, and update yourself constantly as the application process 3 years down the road may be very different from the way it is today.

Regards
