happy new year

hey guys, i'd like to take this opportunity since it's new year's eve, to say a little something on the reflective side.

about a few weeks ago, a fellow interviewee who went through all the interviews and medical checks with me posted on his social media account: "never lose yourself", which made me smile to myself, because those were the exact same words i had posted as a reminder to myself on another social media platform sometime back.

i think the tumultuous journey towards becoming a pilot is not foreign to any of us, much less the emotional sine curve. hence, i was glad to know that i was not alone in feeling this way. hearing the thunderous roar of an aircraft engine or glancing at the pilot who had just walked past (instead of the pretty stewardess) sure does stir up feelings of bitter-sweet excitement that we cannot do anything about now, except for wait, pray, and study hard. (aside self-sponsoring oneself)

anyway, just as flight86 mentioned, it doesn't seem like the courses will be commencing anytime soon. so to my fellow comrades, i wish you a productive 2013, in preparing yourself for the interviews or courses in 2014. always keep the faith going, the passion burning, and of course, never lose yourself.

p/s: please don't chastise or judge me for this but, here's a song to usher the new year in with

Hi flying.monkeyz,

Am just wondering if the cut-off age for cadet selection is still 31? I am turning 31 this year so i'm kindda worried. Hope to hear from you! Thanks!

Unofficially it's 32. But then again I don't think they've got any plans to recruit next year.

As a European, I was told by a SIA cc that they only hire Asians.

Yellow Asians to be more correct.

That really true?

I guess no more contract pilots either

Angel ATPL/Flying related courses in Singapore?

Heya fellas,
I'm still a second year uni student in Singapore and I hope to graduate by 2015. Had breakfast with a SQ captain a few weeks back and he did mentioned how the company is at the moment, not doing very well. I do intend to apply for the cadet pilot programme when I graduate but I don't even know if they'll start hiring by then. I'm not doing an engineering related degree so my captain friend did ask me to acquire some aviation knowledge. Anyone can recommend me if it's possible to do an ATPL(theory) or any flying related courses in Singapore?. Is there even such a course available?

Sincerely,
Pilot Wannabe

KingZul90 - You can take the ATPL module if you enrol into STAA as a cadet doing the CPL/IR course. Although I don't think anyone would advise that you just do the ground school as there is a validity period (if I am not wrong), I sure if you wanted to, you can do it.

It doesn't come cheap either... around 50 grand the last I heard...

Angel Flight101

Thanks for the prompt reply,
$50k is too expensive so I'm not willing to do it. Getting a PPL is also just as expensive. Do you know if there is an aviation101 course or related module? I went to some intro to flight lesson a few years back and there was an ex-airline capt who was sharing with us that one can just do the theory course ATPL for about $4k. Is it possible to just enroll in ground school in STAA?

S$4000 is probably just the papers alone

CAAS requires you to be enrolled into a CAAS approved school in order to sit for the ATPL exams.

you can enrol into STAA's CPL/IR course but I don't think you're allowed to just go for ground school, it comes as a package. You might have penalties to pay if you choose to "drop out" after ground school is completed

during ground school phase, you have 3 payment milestones, each about S$15,600 if I'm not wrong.

total is roughly S$47,000. Note that this amount is NOT the actual cost of ground school. The payment milestones is spread out and arranged as a whole CPL course package.

the CPL course is roughly S$140k in total

$158k if I m not wrong. A PPL locally is expensive, going across the causeway a bit bleak now. Technically, its the end. Unless you get a job that sponsors a PPL. It will come with a bond and not many can do that job.

Intro to Flight

Appreciate all your responses guys. Yeah, the CPL course STAA offers is quite a bomb. Think my best bet now is to just keep reading aviation related stuff online. I cant afford either the PPL or even worst, the CPL course.

Excess pilots: Singapore Airlines waives cadets' bonds - ANN

Was feeling hopeful for an opening sometime this year. Guess I'll have to wait longer.
