Singapore Airlines (SIA) has frozen cadet-pilot recruitment and cut flying hours for junior pilots amid a business slowdown that has led to a manpower surplus.
The last cadet intake was early this year and it has not been decided when hiring will resume, SIA spokesman Nicholas Ionides told The Straits Times. He did not say how many were recruited during the last exercise, but noted that it was a smaller number than in previous years. The usual is about 120 a year.
SIA, which has about 2,400 pilots, last suspended hiring of cadet pilots in 2009 following the global financial crisis. The current slowdown, which caused full-year profits for the 12 months to end-March to dive 69 per cent to $336 million, is also affecting those already flying.
Many junior pilots, especially those on the Boeing 777 fleet, have had their average flying time cut from more than 60 hours a month to less than 50, The Straits Times has learnt.

Anyway just curious (and if anyone is interested), is it general practice for ATC to not acknowledge position call on downwind (in a circuit pattern)? Should PIC continue on to final without acknowledgement/clearance and proceed with a go around at minima?

From my knowledge ATC will reply with your position in circuit eg. No.1 etc and pilot acknowledge ur sequence. On finals pilot will call out finals ATC would either reply for a continue approach or a clearance for touch n go or full stop. If you don't receive any clearance I think a go around would be the right thing to do.

That would be the norm, if no clearances is given - a go around. However should a situation arises where u called downwind position and no acknowledgement or reply was given - is this within rules and regulation? can the atc choose to reply only on finals?
looking up icao 4444, chapter 7 (7-9) it seems the clearance to land can be given between mid downwind all the way to final. but no details of acknowledging downwind calls are given.

When you make this downwind call, are you the only aircraft in circuit? I m not familiar with the procedure in the airport you operate from. I did circuits in WMKJ before but I was told my sequence cos there was traffic when i join for circuit. I guess since you re the only aircraft and no other traffic joining the pattern ATC might have ignore you? From my experience, ATC would acknowledge your report.

yeah thats what i thought too... and no i was not alone...2 in circuit, and the local atc procedure indicates that they can choose to not reply your downwind call, however my situation was that, i was asked to call upon establishing downwind, which in mind was a clearance limit - so there was ambiguity.
My question remains though if its a standard practice else where, I seem to be getting a variation of answers - and if anyone can shed some light on this
atm i'm skimming through ICAO doc 4444 ATM/501 printed 2005...
just thought it might bring some activity to this thread, though its not exactly the place haha.

Yannisoar, my Round 1 was back in Nov 2011. Final round & medical check in March 2012. Cleared for Class 1 fitness and awaiting further instruction from SQ.
