John Boyd had a very dim view of the F111 although, he never flew it. He tore it apart during the design phase and was proved to be absolutely right. His biography is well worth a read.

The commonality with NATO platforms is irrelevant. It’s all about capability and we’ve clearly made the decision to go down the E7 route. E3A and D are already worlds apart in terms of compatibility...
