A possible solution for iPhone/iPad WiFi users: [for GPS]
Hmm this is possible but not a good use of our time; there's better alternatives out like the Dual bluetooth GPS for around $100 (which I'm even thinking of getting to make my 3G iPad1 better through heated windshields).

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Chimbu chuckles 20th Feb 2012 13:53

Whoa dude - I just meant the little aircraft that crawls across the map!!!

But I truly think a sharp thin(ner) magenta line instead of the thick green one would look MUCH more betterer:ok:

Jabawocky 20th Feb 2012 20:31

The C195 icon not good enough huh:}

If they do a Bonanza icon, will it need a shed to live in too:E

And Forkie would like a V tailed icon in a shed too:ooh:

Agree with this - a little more 'polish' (looks wise) to bring it in line with other GPSs/apps would be great (I know it's being picky!)

Chimbu chuckles 20th Feb 2012 22:08

What C195 icon?

As for the rest of your erudite post :ouch:

morno 20th Feb 2012 22:24

Chuck I think you'd be better off with half a Bonanza frame as the icon, not a whole one, :E.

Chimbu chuckles 21st Feb 2012 03:16

Surrounded by smartarses:hmm:

:ok:

Jabawocky 21st Feb 2012 03:40

Well it looks a lot more like a C195 than a Bo.

Yeah, I can confirm that. The DUAL GPS is the ONLY ONE (and trust me, I've tried every gadget in my drawer), that I've been able to get to acquire a GPS fix behind the heated windshields of the triple seven. It works like an absolute charm, quick lock-on, seamless tracking at M 0.85, is easy to set up and has excellent battery life! A very worthwhile addition to the GPS equipped iPad 3G. Highly recommended!

Chimbu chuckles 21st Feb 2012 04:30

Cub maybe.

Ok forget the personalised icons - otherwise Jaba will want a Retard Vehicle :yuk:

Jabawocky 21st Feb 2012 08:51

Ok shaggie, ya better do a bonanza icon, both types, don't want forkie and Chuckles sulking now do we:E

:ok:

Ps I don't need a retard vehicle icon, no identity crisis here, besides your gps might not keep up!:suspect:

Shagpile 21st Feb 2012 09:59

Love the comments! Don't worry; better icons already in next update:

Hey guys,

Just wanted to report I had a few unexpected crashes the other day. No background apps running, only ozrunways. Crashed once when changing from portrait to landscape and another when changing the zoom level on the WAC.

Probably just a random event with nothing to do with the app but thought you might like to know. The boot back time into the app is amazingly fast though.

Also overheated it the ipad for the first time, but 40+ on the ground will do that I guess.

Avgas172 22nd Feb 2012 07:32

Had my IPhone sitting on the dash and it did the overheat thing too .... Never seen that b4

nomorecatering 3rd Mar 2012 02:23

Just purchased the fill professional subsription, and I love it. Have tried the trial version in flight and the iPad GPS accuracy alone is stunning. Less that a knot difference between the G1000 derived groundspeed.

My wish list.

SARTIME box in the HUD part would be really really handy.

A UTC display alongside the local time display.

A better userguide......maybe I'm just dopey, but I havent worked out how to construct a flight plan yet.

baswell 3rd Mar 2012 05:05

Basically just a note you can enter? That's not a bad idea and not very hard.

In 2.7, you will be able to "personalise" all of the boxes of the HUD. UTC time is one of them!

One of the most important things we want to focus on post-2.7 release.

But is is actually quite easy: just tap a waypoint, select it from the pop-up on the map and select "add to flight plan". A new flight plan will be created with that as the first point. Repeat the same for the next points.

mcgrath50 3rd Mar 2012 05:19

Maybe a SARTIME alarm? I know NAIPS does it and you can set your own phone to have alarm, but why make it hard for us pilots! So when you enter it into the box, it will remind you ten mins before?

nomorecatering 3rd Mar 2012 05:54

Some other ideas but not sure if practical.

Wish there was a tab/button/icon like the one for the aip, where we could make it a document that we want, such as the POH for the aircraft, co ops manual, that we load in outrselves. So when we are flying, if you need to look up something you can do it through oz runways. Oh weight & Ballance too.

Aimpoint 3rd Mar 2012 06:51

Is the risk that adding all of these 'nice features' that have nothing to do with Ozrunway's core product could affect what made it so good in the first place?

Chimbu chuckles 3rd Mar 2012 07:02

Indeed.

If you want a POH for your aircraft simple download Goodreader and then order, or scan yourself, a PDF version of your aircrafts POH.

On my Ipad I have Goodreader with searchable PDF versions of POHs for C195, BE36, C414 (soon), my C111 A/P, my KLN90b GPS, my Garmin audio panel, as well as all my airline and Boeing manuals for the 767 and 777 - and on and on.

Thats a pile of manuals and user guides you could not see over in a tablet that weighs < 1kg.

Ozrunways is awesome - if you have too many ancillary functions you will wreck it.

By all means tweak the NAVIGATION and CHARTING aspects - but don't try and tweak it into a replacement for a brain.

OK you get the idea.............. :ok:

Aimpoint 4th Mar 2012 10:05

What would assist navigating is a weather overlay on the maps, not just in a separate box, like what AvPlan does. Would help with weather avoidance and planning enroute.

New iPad

The world is getting a new iPad .. Hurray .... :ok:

when are we getting an update .........

please give me 2.7 soon ?

When .... When ? :sad::sad:

P.S. feature updates for 2.7 are most welcome .. but for the next few updates after that - just hold back on the feature updates and please give us more performance and stability upgrades.

baswell 8th Mar 2012 01:26

Yup, we've ordered ours! We'll definitely be working on making the maps retina compatible, that should look awesome. (At the cost of a larger download, of course. We'll offer two sets of files.)

please give me 2.7 soon ?
Just sent another update to the testers. We're really close, no real show stoppers. Expect to send it to Apple early next week.

Like we said: 2.7 already makes huge performance and stability updates, I doubt there will be many more of those to do after 2.7! Yes, but we'd like to get to a point where we add features incrementally and quicker.

Is there any way that we could choose a primary DAP and then be able to switch between it and the map with the click of one easy button?
Go to settings and turn "Hide Tab Bar" off. Then it is just a matter of using the tab buttons to switch.

Jetjr 8th Mar 2012 06:31

Still waiting for android version
Wheres the best place to buy a used pad2? They should be good value now?

baswell 9th Mar 2012 04:47

Don't hold your breath, Jetjr; too much work on the iOS version still.

Also look for iPads 2s to show up on the Apple refurbished / clearance store.

Shagpile 14th Mar 2012 23:33

OzRunways v2.7 submitted to Apple for review. Thanks to the beta testers on this forum & for the ideas. No doubt there will be many more ideas & suggestions so keep them coming. Cheers

Fondair 15th Mar 2012 11:27

Has anyone been successfully using their phone as a GPS receiver with a Wi-fi only iPad?

I've read that you can share your phones GPS position with your iPad over bluetooth and thus eliminating the need to purchase one of the two external GPS receivers suggested by the ozrunways team.

I'm just wondering if anyone does this and if its a reliable set-up?

Thanks for any replies!

KRviator 22nd Mar 2012 13:31

Just a heads up for some...

I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but 2.7 needs iOS 5.0, so don't plan on updating OzRunways while you're away from home if you haven't already updated the operating system on your iPad through iTunes first.

baswell 22nd Mar 2012 22:53

2.7 is now available!

Yes, you do need iOS 5.0 for this one. 2.7.1 already submitted to Apple with some bug fixes. But we do have a few thousand people using it already and as bug reports are NOT streaming in, we reckon it's pretty good. ;-)

Oh, and while you go to the App Store to update the app, tap right into it, scroll to the bottom and give us a rating and/or review, even if you have in the past as ratings go per version.

Thanks!

Bas .. In expanded plan, track 005, wind 270/35, heading -15.
Can't fathom fuel table on multi-leg plan, but will keep trying.
This is becoming an excellent app.
My request would be for better fuel calculations (incl holding and climb rates).
Cheers

Bas .. In expanded plan, track 005, wind 270/35, heading -15.
Oops! Thanks for the bug report.

My request would be for better fuel calculations (incl holding and climb rates).
We're working on it. Including performance by flight level, etc. for the high-performance/turbine flyers.

I went to select which ones (thru the "more" menu in dl's), and cant select any -it just sits there and stares at me..
Did you press the "mark area" button? After that, you should be able to drag your finger over the screen and select.

Also: the manual is now easily accessible from the "Other" tab.

iPad 1 upgrade

I current have OzRunWays running on an IPad 1 with IOS 4.3 and understand I need to upgrade to IOS 5 in order to run OzRunways 2.7. Has anyone done this and does the IPad function normally after the upgrade? Some of the Apple forums I have looked at suggest users IPads have become unstable after the upgrade.

Thanks.

rioncentu 24th Mar 2012 09:56

My IPad 1 has OS5 and it's a bucket of s88t. Constant crashes.

I use ozrunways but it's almost useless due these issues.

. (great programme though guys!)

Im on the hunt for an IPad 3. The iPad 1 is ok for photos and email and the net but if I ask it to think too much it just cracks up.

Cheers

Nivo 24th Mar 2012 21:56

I upgraded both my and my wife's iPad 1 to ios5 with no problems. Ran up to OzRunways 2.6 on it with only an occasional crash. I have now made the upgrade to iPad 3.

Nivo

Shagpile 24th Mar 2012 23:58

Yep you'll need iOS5 for OzRunways v2.7 since it uses a bunch of new iOS5 features.

My IPad 1 has OS5 and it's a bucket of s88t. Constant crashes.
I've heard of a couple of problems after installing iOS5, but nothing that wasn't fixed by deleting & reinstalling apps again.

Also OzRunways v2.7 uses the GPU for most of its drawing now (instead of CPU) so it uses much less memory resulting in more stability (v2.7) on iOS5 than (v2.6) on iOS4.

We did a 2hr presentation at Renmark yesterday involving showing every feature of the app on an iPad2 and it didn't miss a beat.

The iPad3 appears to be ever so slightly slower than iPad2 since it now has to render the image files as double the resolution, and the CPU (which does this work) is only slightly faster. But it looks MUCH better! No crashes though. Retina icons & artwork coming in v2.7.1 in a few days.

Suggestion

Something else for the wishlist!

When flying IFR, I want to see the IFR waypoints, aids etc, when flying VFR, I dont want to see the IFR way points etc cluttering up the display. Is it possible to either;

a) Have the IFR/VFR way points etc display on an appropriate chart, such as VFR on a VNC, IFR on ERC's? or

b) Have two or three user defined profiles set up, so you only need to switch between profiles rather than going into settings etc. That way you can have different setups depending on different ops you may do. or

c) Have two default set ups, IFR & VFR which you can customise.

Impressed with 2.7 guys. Everything so far has been a great step forward. This is such a great tool. Gotta love the instant TAF in chart mode.

Cheers

Baswell, Shagpile, et al.
With regard to getting your excellent iPAD program onto other platforms (eg Android) I just came across, on another forum, this announcement from the Anywhere Map owner, regarding getting his program onto tablet computers.

"We had a huge investment in the Windows environment, and after a few false starts at rewriting our code for the iPad we decided that this was going to be a huge project... and what about Android and how to support our existing customers on all their Windows based devices?
About a year ago, the perfect solution became clear. We found a true multi-platform development tool that allows us to write applications for a generic tablet, and then deploy that code to any one of several different specific devices, such as Android, IOS, Windows, Symbian, and the list goes on. Naturally I was rather suspicious, and I reasonably assumed that this would result in slow pigware, not the user experience that we wanted to push. After we wrote a test app, those fears were proven wrong. The beauty of this approach to supporting the iPad and Android markets is that we will actually wind up ENHANCING our Windows users experience at the same time!"

So are you aware of the "true multi-platform development tool " and would it be of any help in getting you onto the Android area on the ground floor?

John

baswell 26th Mar 2012 03:15

Looks like Anywhere Map has been made using Adobe Flash/AIR, so no "native" Android or iOS look and feel.

It is an interesting approach, but not one we'll be doing any time soon. Even if we wanted to use that technology, it would still be a 100% rewrite now to an application that looks and works entirely different.
