Hi guys, just a couple of observations since I upgraded to 2.7
1/ on my i phone 4S the map now has only 3 large transparent fields at the top, I cannot make it show more than 3 in the settings? (currently GS TRK and LAT ) 2/ On my i Pad2 the same menu has TRK 345*T and not M? I can't get Magnetic 3/ My phone used to lock onto Satellites quite well in the Airbus cockpit but now it refuses to, I've tried many times in the past few days over Aust and SE Asia and it won't lock on. Thanks |

???? Thread says it's locked and people are complaining about that, but maybe it's not locked after all?

Can I get wrongly accused of getting it unlocked now?

Thread reopened - just to note thanks for all the ideas & comments. Latest implemented idea is using a highly accurate magnetic model of earth (from NOAA) for more precise true/mag tracks, good worldwide not just in Aus.
At the moment the mag/true tracks are good for your current position & may be inaccurate at waypoints hundreds of miles ahead. These will come good as you get closer to them, however in v2.7.2 (eta 1 week after v2.7.1) we've made it so these report correct headings in the planning phase (as they should have, apologies). Remember "not for air navigation" as its not a million dollar TSO'd piece of equipment. |
Thanks Tail wheel. I don't envy you your job!
Nivo |
Ok Tail wheel thanks. :ok:

I think Bevan666 (Avplan) deserves an apology for a false accusation earlier.
I would acknowledge that Avplan is also a good piece of iPad software, and we all benefit from a healthy and good competitor to Ozrunways. Long may they both thrive. John |
Bevan did not complain.

Updated my iPad2 to OS5 tonight and also updated OzRunways. Top marks for the latest features chaps. The area frequency window is a neat idea and the planner screen is much appreciated too.
A couple of things I've noted though, both to do with the BoM radar page... The location does not match the location displayed by OzRunways on the VTC - and it seems to change each time you access the BoM radar overlay. Also, the most recent return seems to stay imprinted on the radar screen, with the 4 previous images coming and going as normal. You can kinda see what I'm getting at in the image below. The storm cell is tracking to the northwest and the latest return is "shadowed" by the previous one. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7260/7...064426aa_z.jpg |
I'm having an issue with mine on an iPad 1 that others might have experienced so this might be of help.
When on the map page, eg the WAC, I slide my finger around but nothing happens, it simply doesn't move the map. However, if I use two fingers, it does work. I discovered this as the map didn't move with one finger, but I could still pinch and expand it successfully. |
First, great little product. I tried it out last week, and it's so much better than carrying paper!
I have two comments though, One - Wish list - How about a pay by the month subscription instead of just one yearly one? Two - Issue - Sometimes it would lock up for no reason, and I'd have to restart the whole app. Then, the terrain data would not display, even though the menu had a tick beside it. Cycleing it off and on didn't make the terrain data reappear. Power cycleing the whole device did. I was using ipad 3 with the latest OS. Thanks |
Oz Runways
Hey mate my Wife just gave me a ASUS Eee Pad as a B/D present..I have O/R on my Iphone wondering if your still making an Android version in the near Furture? Thanks!

Folks, I have been using the Ipad and OZ rw in earnest lately and have notcied two glaring problems with the flight planning:
First, when I try to enter waypoints into the "quick plan" box the Ipad freezes with the keyboard showing and the only way I can get rid of the keyboard is to stop the program totally then restart it. Any suggestions here? Secondly when I hit the "help" button I get referred to a page from the ERSA about noticiing a document in need of amendment, is this a joke? I did try uninstalling then reinstalling the app but the problems remain. Apologies if this has been asked before but this thread is getting so long it is hard to wade back through it. |

Baswell, thanks for the quick answer and the heads up, you have also neatly explained why it did work for me a few days prior.
The help button in question is onthe box that comes up when I firsthit the flight planning button. i did also notice that when I reloaded the program it came up with a screen offering help withthe new features. When I accepted i also got this same page. But all this is pretty minor I guess, i just got home from a 4 hour multi waypoint journey and the tap the map and plan is awesome, worked a treat. |
Baswell, Shagpile et al
Is there an opportunity for live tracking of your current position by 3G? This would be a very derirable option, both for relatives and for safety if it can be accessed by SAR to look at last position and track. Maybe an option for user to set the frequency of position updates to a web page. John |
rjtrjt ... If you want someone (make that EVERYONE:8 ) to track you just open trackonthemap.com in a browser and click on track me now. Anyone else who opens the page can see where you are.
|
Or enable "find my iPhone" in Settings. Allows your wife to see your every move

Whens the next update ?
|
There was only an update last week (v2.7.2). We're working on a few things but happy with the stability at the moment, however Ive made some optimisations for iPad3 as it runs too slow for my liking at the moment...maybe we'll release that soon.
Problem with iPad 3 is it is now loading 2-4x the images to display with only a marginal increase in hardware performance so it's slowed down a bit. I've fixed that by lowering the resolution slightly so it looks hi-Rez (good) still, town names are slightly larger again but it runs a lot faster. |
Using the the other day, I found that when zoomed in a fair bit (the scale (which is excellent by the way) showed about 30nm), the moving map didn't work. The aeroplane stayed stagnant and the map didn't move under the aeroplane. Zoom it out a bit bigger and it was OK.
For a future update, the track up option is awesome and I've used it quite a bit. It would be nicer if we could go 'track up' with the aircraft position toward the bottom of the screen rather than in the middle? I'm not so fussed about what is behind me! :ok: If I've got that wrong though in terms of use, let me know. |
To ensure the map is tracking you, make sure the little circle thing in the bottom left is blue. If not, press on it.
|
Yep. Done that and double checked it.

Keg,
In ya B767 you might be interested in what is behind, but I am sure Wally would tell you why some us like to know about all around us. Especially on top or inside cloud:oh: ;) don't tell Wally :} |
The ever lasting need for stability.
I have seriously started to doubt myself with my ability to use this awesome app.... I admit that I am still living in the stone age ... Still using two IPad 1's (3G)
After so many stability fixes and updates by the DEV's , I still feel that the App needs more stability / performance updates. I don't know if anyone else is experiencing the same problems as me. ie. 1) Slow load times. 2) multiple crashes 3) wait till eternity for a good gps fix 4) crashes while reading through aip / ersa 5) crashes while changing brightness. and many more The above mentioned problems happen with the IPad 1's with the following config .......The IPad 1 3G .. has only 1 non-default app that is OzRunways , it has no music , no movies , no photos. just the latest IOS and OzRunways thats it. I plead to the DEV's Please give the app more stability and performance updates first, before adding any new features. thanks tipsy . ? can the DEV's share with us the Number of OzRunways subscribers who are still using IPad 1's please. |
I run it on an iPad 1 and it is a bit slow sometimes but it seems to do everything I need. The only problem is have is I have trouble moving and scrolling the map around, however I worked out that it works perfectly by using two fingers at the same time (against all apple logic and iPhone / iPad standard operating procedure). You can't rule out that our iPad is struggling for reasons other than OzRunways, even Apple harp on these days about how every iPad is different with different components etc.
At the rate you are having trouble Tipsy I'll personally start off the process donate $10 towards your new iPad 3. |
Tipsy, I am seriously wondering if there is something specifically wrong with your iPad 1.
I know it still isn't the most stable on that platform (the simply truth is that it has too little memory) but yours sound extraordinary. Before he got his iPad 3, Shagpile only had the 1 (never owned a 2) so he made sure it was good on it; he had to live with it too! Jabawocky also is a heavy user of OzRunways, only has an iPad 1 and he's happy with it. Having more Apps or music on it should not make a difference. To answer your question: less than 10% now, and dropping fast as people flock to iPad 3s. (We saw a real spike it trials when the 3 came out and then purchases a month after; obviously people were waiting for it.) |
Shagpile and Baswell, the level of customer support and interaction you guys have with your uses is staggering, I know alot of companies that could learn a thing or 3 from you guys.
Just as a general question, but those of you who are using Ozrunways in the hotter places of the country, has anyone had any issues with the yoke mounts and the ipad overheating? I've had mine go twice on me in the last year due to sitting on the seat/knee in the sun. I've taken the case of it but was thinking that maybe the yoke mount would allow for better airflow around the unit and decrease the chance of it overheating. |
Jabawocky also is a heavy user of OzRunways, only has an iPad 1 and he's happy with it. |
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to print the flight plan without the EET and ETA filled out? Like blank squares so I can fill them out myself the good old fashioned way?
|
I run mine on an IPad 1 and do have crashes here and there but overall it's pretty good these days. The updates have sorted it out.
Make sure you are not running other apps in the background. (double tap the home button to see the row of apps at the bottom, then hold one of them til they wiggle and close them) As Baswell sais, they really are light on in the memory department. |
REMEMBER
Double click the button and then push and hold an icon, all start wriggling, then close all other apps to free up the memory. |
Nice photo of you two blokes in this months sport pilot mag!

I used my iPad and Ozrunways for the first time using the latest version today and the first time Ive used the flight planner to build and fly a route. Previously Ive only used it for day VFR, using DCT TO function and ERSA etc as applicable to VFR ops.
Im still learning and todays use was as a PAX (sitting in RHS) on a SE IFR flight. I have a few questions I hope the collective brains may be able to answer. When using the get winds function for flight planning, it works great, if there's only one area of winds in the arfor. When there became a divided arfor for winds (on updating at mid-way stop, ie: updated ARFOR), it chose to use the winds from area B as listed on the ARFOR, which was not the area I was flying in. Can this be corrected ? Did I miss a cue to select area for winds ? As it turns out both weren't accurate, no surprises there really. There appears no way to add alternate fuel in the fuel calcs, there's a box but no way to enter it or specify a leg in the plan as an ALT ? During flight A080 Ozrunways had trouble to get info via 3G, even over towns which have 3G service ? Once or twice it updated in flight, yet I could get updates on my iPhone via NAIPS and BOM Radar at the same time ? Yes its a 3G iPad, not linking thru my phone, which I found was hit and miss if it worked properly so went back to using the iPad pre-paid. Andrew |

It keeps crashing. I've been running it on an iPad 3 and have similar problems. I know it's new in terms of new frontiers, but at the end of the day, when you're charging $100+ a year. :uhoh: Fair point that I've spent my money already, but perhaps it's been launched too soon. No offence - it's pretty good for a tech demonstrator and I'd love to check it out in 12 months time. :ok: |
Are you closing down the other apps when you are using it frozo?
I have limited issues when using on the iPad1... Only have issues on the 1 if I try and do lots of things quickly. |
