Yes, on 4.1. I can find the ALA's and AOPA information by tapping in the general vicinity, just wondering if "displayed on maps" means I can see them without tapping?

peterc005 21st Jun 2014 02:45

I'd expect to see it displayed on the maps too. Given it's a new feature it's more likely to have defects. I'd drop the OzRunways people a line on Facebook or their website and raise this as a query or issue.

I notice the price has quietly gone up ? When did that happen?
Inflation's a bitch :ugh:

Shagpile 21st Jun 2014 23:07

Sorry for the delays; the quickest place to get an answer is at help.ozrunways.com

AOPA requires OzRunways v4.1 or later, which you'll need to grab as a free update from the App Store first. AOPA isn't linked to a standard AIRAC 28 day data cycle, so we've bundled it in with the app (being text data, it has a small memory footprint).

You can view the entries in the 'Airports' tab, or on the map as ALA's. You need to turn them on with the vertical bar on the left edge:

If you ever have any problems with something needing a refresh, try killing the app from background (Apple's equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+del):
How to Close iPhone Apps Running in the Background

Inflation's a bitch
Yeah in 4+ years, we've raised prices $4 to $79 for Private/VFR and $4 for the IFR/Pro add-on.

We also don't make any money from AOPA, so when you buy that, all we get is enough to cover the credit-card transaction & bandwidth. The rest goes to supporting AOPA, so we're not totally evil.

Aussie Bob 22nd Jun 2014 01:18

Ah, forgot about the side thingy, thanks Shagpile and Peter.

peterc005 22nd Jun 2014 01:48

For a hundred-odd bucks a year Ozrunways is great value.

Can't imagine anyone buys a handheld Garmin aviation GPS any more when you can get far better functionality a lot cheaper on an iPhone/iPad.

VH-XXX 22nd Jun 2014 04:16

GREAT JOB on the weather feature guys :ok:

The plotting of the fronts in particular is very well implemented and all at the press of a button.

For those that haven't updated, be sure to hit the AppStore before your next flight!

Jack Ranga 22nd Jun 2014 11:06

I ain't complainin' I love your work :ok: whinging about 4 bucks defies belief

Look at all those airports! :O

Squawk7700 16th Aug 2014 11:59

I'm having trouble getting the Geo referenced map to show my position. I'm taxiing at Moorabbin and select the Aerodrome Chart Page 1 Geo'ed, however it doesn't show where I currently am on the airfield. I definitely have the blue orb selected on the map page. Any ideas?

rjtjrt 16th Aug 2014 12:08

Squawk
Maybe need to turn Location Services on for Ozrunways

settings - privacy. - location services. Make sure It is turned on for Ozrunways specifically.
Hope this helps.

Squawk7700 16th Aug 2014 12:12

You might be onto something I just found "Daps Georeference Tools" was switched off in the settings section on my phone so I'll check location services and this when I get back to the plane. I'll have to start poking around further.

the_rookie 20th Sep 2014 02:19

The ruler/potractor update is perfect!! Been waiting a while for that to happen. Well done!

iPhone 6 PLUS

Hello,

Has anyone tried ozrunways on an iPhone 6 PLUS?

I'm thinking of buying one so that I can ditch my iPad Mini (for VFR flights)

Thanks

Active restricted areas

G'day, any plans to highlight active military airspace? Cheers. GR.

Ken Worth 19th Feb 2015 09:48

I have just bought an iPad

Have got a the free month trial of oz runways and it looks pretty good!

Is it possible to submit a flight plan? Can't seem to work that out

Also what is the general consensus regarding av plan vs oz runway?

Doesn't appear that they have a free trial. Just want to get the best program that can do everything.

Thanks

peterc005 19th Feb 2015 10:31

You need to buy the NAIPS app from the Apple site to get weather and lodge flight plans.

rjtjrt 19th Feb 2015 19:19

Avplan web site has "The AvPlan app is available from the Apple App Store. The app price is free, with a one months unrestricted free trial of all features."

For both AVPLAN ans OzRunways it is best to buy the subscription from their web site (not the App Store), and just use App Store to install the program on the iPad. That is cheaper for the purchaser.

Both are excellent. Seems to me there is little between them. AVPLAN have just been announced as one of 2 apps in shortlist for a competition at Avalon Airshow "Congrats to two apps that have been shortlisted for Aerospace Australia innovation awards: AvPlan and Jacobson Flare". OzRunways also has excellent reviews.

Long may both companies thrive as we all benefit from them competing against each other so actively.

Eh? I don't have this app, and while I don't lodge plans from Oz Runways, I can certainly get the weather. I am sure I could lodge plans to if I so desired.

Ken Worth 19th Feb 2015 22:46

Thanks rj will look into that again.

Have already downloaded the naips ap, so what you are saying then is I have to manually enter all the flight plan into naips like we used to?

I like how the runways site does a nice flight plan by just entering the destination and departure. Would have hoped they had a function then to just send it to naips.

Squawk7700 19th Feb 2015 23:07

I have requested that feature a while back, they are probably busy on the android version at a guess.

Bevan666 19th Feb 2015 23:40

Hi

Yes, AvPlan EFB has a fully featured one month trial as well. AvPlan EFB will submit flight plans directly, while OzR needs the NAIPS app.

Come see us at the Avalon Airshow next week and see version 5. Its awesome! :ok:

Bevan..

Adsie 20th Feb 2015 00:28

Nice sales pitch Bevan

Bevan666 20th Feb 2015 01:49

Thats not a sales pitch, just answering a question.

I'm very proud of what we do, sorry that this enthusiasm is not to your liking.

Adsie 21st Feb 2015 08:20

Unsure of how to reply to that Bevan

I'd like to sledge your product but you need to stay professional.

I am glad you are proud of your product but I do not think that this thread is the right place for the comments you make about your product against Ozrunways.

Maybe you you should also be professional and start another thread

ACMS 21st Feb 2015 09:11

Oh come on, get a grip. He is perfectly entitled to come in here with FACTS.

You must be part of his opposition, are you?

Adsie 21st Feb 2015 09:25

Not at all

Not associated with either company

megle2 21st Feb 2015 11:19

So how about you put your cards on the table Adsie

Adsie 23rd Feb 2015 09:47

Unsure of what you are really asking megle2.

I have no cards to throw down.

I think my comment is very open

CaptainEmad 4th Mar 2015 23:28

Anyway kiddies,

I notice that OzRwys 4.2.2 has a useful PRD function now. You press and hold within your chosen restricted area and it not only displays the vertical limits, but after what seems like a brief polling of NAIPS, it displays the current status.

This I find truly useful.
One thing I always found very tedious is going through dozens of PRD notams trying to find the ones that will affect my flight route.

The only problem is that it needs an internet connection.
It would be great if you could tick a box next to the chart for PRDs that would, say download all the PRD notams, read them and display the active ones.
You could chose the Area (e.g. 40, 44, 20) and a time limit of your expected operation.
You could do this before you lost 3G, the results saved and displayed on the ERC.

G'day guys and girls...I have just had a go at setting up weight and balance for evektor Sportstar plus in ozrunways...I have had a lot of trouble however I think i have got it....the only way I could get it to work or even come close was by converting the sportstars POH envelope from having weight (kg) on the Y axis and moment (kg.m) on the X axis.....to instead having length (cm) on the X axis (weight still in Y axis)...I only did it because the app asks for "weight" and "long" when entering the plot points for the envelope...and all I did was work back from the moment (kg.m) to find the length of the arm. when I did it (I.e. I put all the points into the app) the same as the POH (weight X kg.m) it didn't even come close...
when I did it by changing the axis units as above (to weight X arm length) it turned out to be very similar to the cog envelope that is also in the Poh that determines what %MAC the cig position is at...which I thought was a good sign....also when I did dummy tests on it against the POH envelope that I usually use the one I created works very very well. If anyone wanted screen shots of what I did let me know.

So long story short try doing it by inputting the envelope points as weight for Y Axis and length for X axis...I hope I haven't confused this....let me know if I am way off too guys

Weight problems

When u make a flight plan the fuel is already accounted into the flight plan...if you Adjust any fuel by either:
An aircraft capacity value change - from the settings
Or
Change the value of fuel being carried (this can be done on the flight plan sheet on the right side of the table in the top row - a value will be already placed here that lists the exact amount required for the trip/leg of your current flight plan)
Or
Changing values From the weight and balance set up

When you change any fuel, for example saying you would like to carry 110l instead of the 54l that ozrunways determines that is required for the leg or trip, it will be added to the flight plan as weight on top of your loaded weight (i think ozrunways calls this LW In the app), and your mtow will also increase....however if you select that for the flight you would only like to carry the exact amount that ozrunways says is required the Loaded weight and MTow will add up correctly.

All it is saying is, is that whatever ozrunways determines is required for that flight in fuel weight, will be the difference between your no fuel weight and your Mtow. Any additional fuel will not be counted as fuel weight, it Will automatically be included as load (the same as pax and bags).

Hope this helps

Squawk7700 11th Jun 2015 10:44

Ozrunways 5 just released. Impressive work guys!

Live tracking and plain English TAF's are a great addition!

manymak 11th Jun 2015 14:03

Decoded TAF's.

Catering for the lowest common denominator :ugh:

Dora-9 11th Jun 2015 20:30

How very condescending of you, Manymak!

I think this is a great change. I've never understood why they (the BoM in particular) persist in using codes. The opportunities for mis-interpretation should be obvious and, given the ease of communication now, the "fix" has been blindingly obvious yet the pig-headedness continues. Well done OzRunways!

Sunfish 11th Jun 2015 20:49

Dora, the codes exist because in the days of Telex and Morse, every letter sent cost money so brevity was absolutely essential. Go back further and you will even find various "commercial codes" used by businesses to keep communication costs down.

I personally like the codes because it allows me to show off in front of laymen :}

MadMadMike 11th Jun 2015 21:14

I like coded because I can look at a TAF and interpret all the information I need in a second or two. I can read and entire area forecast of TAF's in a minute and move on with my day. The ones that need deeper thought stand out and I can review them in detail.

Decoded is a pain in the arse. Fine if people want it as long as it never replaces the standard format.

Dora-9 11th Jun 2015 22:22

Sunfish:

I personally like the codes because it allows me to show off in front of laymen :}
You cracked me up with this! A lifetime of flying commercially and I'm still finding an abbreviation and left wondering wtf it means. But I have long learned the correct expression so as to look as though I know it all...

MMM:

Are you serious? You mind must work in very interesting ways; I can find little logic in your comment.

fujii 11th Jun 2015 23:06

After 42 years in ATC, codes are plain text to me. Looking at the decoded message, I found it slow going, too wordy. Decoded TAFs are probably good for new or low time pilots. As only TAFs are decoded, people will still need to decode the area forecasts where most flying is done.
