Leadslead, great to hear you are enjoying OzRunways. 2.5 will be even better soon. And for after that, we're already working on a 747-style HSI to make you feel even more at home! Well, we hope it's 747 style, Neil is copying it from the 747 in X-Plane 9.

Incidentally, X-plane 9 is how we now do a lot of our testing:

http://www.ozrunways.com/images/public/testing.jpg

We need to make it a bit easier to use, but we should publish how you too can hook up to X-Plane 9 reasonably soon.

Yes, Neil is simultesting on three iPads, an iPhone and the iPhone simulator!

What would the world do without nerds? :E

They pull pretty hot chicks these days too :ok:

They pull pretty hot chicks these days too
Only the really rich ones! :ok:

Jack Ranga 1st Nov 2011 12:07

Well, I hope these nerds get rich :D

Great product :ok:

WannaBeBiggles 1st Nov 2011 22:09

As a nerd and pilot, that is frikkin awesome!

(Caution: Nerd talk)

Quite curious: how big is your code base now for each product?

baswell 2nd Nov 2011 01:03

Now image the hotness of chicks pulled by rich nerds who are also PILOTS!!!!

@WannaBeBiggles: by what metric? I'd say it's getting to be pretty freakin' huge! There are bigger downloads out there for iOS, but they contain loads of images and sounds, ours contains hardly any...

On another subject: the 17 Nov 2011 database has been released, you should see it update next time you start OzRunways and you'll be able to switch to it in settings and pre-download all the goodies.

We have firemen standing by to hose down the servers...

Keg 2nd Nov 2011 03:34

Have you guys upgraded the servers or did I just get in quickly? All seemed to go a bit quicker than last time. Perhaps that's just me though! Story of my life. Everything happens much too quickly! :ok:

Jay Bo 2nd Nov 2011 04:29

Would love to know how to run it on xplane

Basewell - Lines of Code (excluding headers and XIB's)?

Capt Claret 2nd Nov 2011 09:42

G'day Baswell et al,

Is there a reason that the Townsville TAC isn't available to download?

Cheers.

Shagpile 2nd Nov 2011 11:22

Is there a reason that the Townsville TAC isn't available to download?
It is on the bottom half of the Cairns TAC

Shagpile 2nd Nov 2011 11:33

Basewell - Lines of Code (excluding headers and XIB's)?
About 80,000 give or take.

baswell 3rd Nov 2011 00:17

Good news, everyone!

Apple has issued a fix to the "automatically deleted caches" feature of iOS 5, slated for 5.0.1, which is currently in the hands of developers.

The iOS 5 “file purge” issue | OzRunways

I have put all the code I need in 2.5 now, so when that is released, this won't be an issue anymore.

Capt Claret 3rd Nov 2011 01:05

Well blow me down, so it is. I didn't look further than the list of downloadable charts. So now I'm guessing that ASA issues a combined YBCS/YBTL TAC, whereas Jeppesen (with which I'm more familiar) issue separate TACs?

Thanks Shagpile.

Jabawocky 3rd Nov 2011 02:47

I like the new QUEUED feature :ok:

Anyone else have problems with APPS just shutting down by themselves? No doubt an IOS5 issue.

baswell 3rd Nov 2011 05:29

Jaba: thanks to his new testing rig, Neil has identified a lot of the issues in 2.5. In optimising things (making screens draw much faster), some things got unstable that we could only find with longer testing, which is easy now with X-Plane.

Expect a new beta soon that will be a lot more stable!

Bas.

Jabawocky 3rd Nov 2011 05:35

This app shutting down issue is not just OzRunways, it is Safari or possibly others. I had to shut the device down and restart it to stop the issue. Only since IOS5.

I do not think it is your problem. Unless OzR was running in the background and it was resource hungry or something.

blumoon 6th Nov 2011 00:04

AIC & SUPs

Is there any thoughts to adding AIC & SUPs to the database? Might be handy...

Great App!! :ok:

Dual XGPS150 vs GNS 5870

Now these have been around for a couple of months or more, can any users post the pro's and con's of the Dual XGPS150 vs GNS 5870 with OzRunways?

John

LeadSled 10th Nov 2011 01:53

rjtetc,
I have found the Dual unit very good, but have not used it enough yet to determine the real battery life, except to say that the it is longer than the endurance of any aircraft I might be flying that doesn't have a brasco.

The Bluetooth pairing with the iPad2 was simple, the time from on to providing GPS information to the iPad is much faster than some of the TSO GPS I use from time to time.

Indeed, I can get a useable GPS output sitting at my desk at home, something neither of my TomTom car units will achieve, my TSO Trimble/Freeflights are not in the hunt, despite clear line of sight reception to an external pre-amp equipped antenna.

Tootle pip!!

Agent86 10th Nov 2011 04:26

+1 for the Dual.
it does need a view of the northern horizon to get a good sat pickup.
The only problem I have had is leaving it in the aircraft ...luckily it has reappeared in my mailbox (so far).

I bought an external battery pack that will recharge any USB powered device (including the iPad2) from here as insurance against the iPad running out of steam just when you really need it.

Keg 10th Nov 2011 06:30

GNS5870 with IPad 1 today BNE- PER and it was flawless for the 5:30 that it was in use. Sucked the crap out of the battery on the iPad though. Plugged in at 96%, had ozrunways running from about 15K on climb out and had 14% battery left on shut down- about 13% per hour I think.

No complaints with it so far.

glekichi 10th Nov 2011 11:04

I get a perfectly useable signal on my iPads own gps, no fancy external unit required. It takes a while to acquire the fix but after that it is fine. That is with heated windshields etc at turboprop speeds and altitudes, no sim card for the assisted gps either.

Avgas172 10th Nov 2011 20:56

OK, I admit it I am Ipad illiterate, BUT have just got my new IP2 and downloaded Oz runways, Q: is this Version 2 I have downloaded? or am I missing something in the app store .... just shows app as OZ Runways, cost was about $9.50 I think. Anyhoo still working out how to drive it and would love to be able to hook it up to my new Garmin695 somehow. Soon should have the best equipped bugsmasher in Oz.
thanks in advance
A172

baswell 10th Nov 2011 23:57

If you just downloaded it, it will be 2.0.1. That should have been a free download. The $9.50 app you downloaded might have been NAIPS?

You've got a month to try it for free, after that, go to our website at OzRunways | Mobile Aviation Apps for Australia to buy/renew the subscription for a lower price than you see in the app. (Because Apple doesn't take 30% if you get it direct from our site.)

Avgas172 11th Nov 2011 00:13

Aha! ok will do the subscription next then....

Daniel Bernoulli 12th Nov 2011 23:11

I have a question re OzRunways - how come I seem to have to download all the charts etc every time I want to use it. Is there a setting to retain old charts etc or to automatically download charts?

Disregard, just found the "file Purge" issue thread.

baswell 13th Nov 2011 07:09

Daniel:

Was that actually happening to you? Did you have a very full iPad? Unless it's filled up, this shouldn't be happening.

I'd love to know as we've never heard it happening from someone!

Jay Bo 17th Nov 2011 00:07

Hi Baswell, just wondering since you test ozrunways using x plane how do you do it? Is it as simple as downloading a plugin/app or is there is a lot more to it than this?
Thanks

Jack Ranga 17th Nov 2011 07:03

Sorry fellas, I think I asked this before but can't remember the answer :ugh:

Are you fellas going to be geo-referencing approach plates? (DAP, not jepperson)

This is the only thing left that in my opinion would make your product perfect!

For Obama: Perfect = the ducks nuts, a ball tearer, corker

havick 18th Nov 2011 02:02

hey rowan, bas. When's the next version due out?

My Jepps renewal is coming up soon and I'd rather get a subscription to ozrunways (once I've tried the new version) than continue with jepps.

Any chance of getting the CAO's on their as an ammendment service as well?

baswell 18th Nov 2011 02:41

Good news everyone!

We have just submitted 2.5 to Apple. Approval can take anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days...

Are you fellas going to be geo-referencing approach plates? (DAP, not jepperson)
We currently do not have access to this information and doing 1700 or so by ourselves is too much of a task. That said: we are looking at alternative sources of data that may or may not have geo-referencing for Australia. (Not trying to be cloak and dagger here, we honestly don't know yet as getting access is slow.)

Would we like the geo-referenced and even 3D high ways in the sky? Hell yeah! But it's going to take some time and sourcing of good data. We are really keen to get STARs in soon, as we do have waypoint data for those.

just wondering since you test ozrunways using x plane how do you do it?
Tada! User Manuals | OzRunways We put the 2.5 documentation up so you can see what is coming. X-Plane setup isn't dead-easy, but if you can figure out how to fly an airplane... :D

Good idea, we'll have to look into it. They are CASA documents and it the past we have had no luck getting permission to put in things like the pilot guides and VFG. But it's been a while, maybe they have had a change of heart and we should ask again!

rjtjrt 18th Nov 2011 03:02

Baswell et al
I have just looked at the Flt Plan manual.
Can you flight plan to some point other than an aerodrome? If so, can you put in a point that is user specified (ie a Lat Long, or even a point on the map that you point to by finger/or a stylus)?
Also can you rubber band (ie modify in flight) a flight plan to a point that is not an aerodrome?
From my first look seems only able to go to aerodromes as turning points/destinations, but I am usually wrong when I speed read a manual.
Great job from all of you and you richly deserve your success.
Regards
John

baswell 18th Nov 2011 03:57

Can you flight plan to some point other than an aerodrome?
Yes, you can pick any kind of waypoint from the database. For somewhere that is not a known waypoint, you need to create a user waypoint for it first. (We'll try to remedy that soon.)

Don't bother about that one baswell. The guides are available from CASA as .PDF's and I've downloaded them onto the iPad. I use Goodreader to organise my docs in the iPad.

What I'm now thinking about is a backup iPad.:E

Yeah, no worries at all, I'll just tell you which ones I want done :}

Avgas172 27th Nov 2011 03:08

How's the flight planning tool coming along, will do my subscription in a few days, then sit back for a year of nav bliss....

Looks like it is 10 days this time...

Looking forward to V2.5.

Yes apologies it actually was approved by Apple a few days ago but we had to reject it then re-submit without a feature due to some external issues (sigh).

It should be out this Wednesday hopefully.
